I probably sit somewhere in the middle. We’ll see how teams adjust defensively if it becomes more prominent, some very good players got made to look foolish at times this year. Whether it was JPP against the Redskins or Clay Matthews this past weekend. I agree with Forevergiggs that to a certain extent we’ve seen it before and Brady types will likely continue to be the ideal. Luck is closer to that mould than the other rookies and he will probably learn from all the inefficient throws and interceptions he had this year in the long term. He is not exactly Drew Bledsoe though, in fact his raw numbers are close to that of Cam Newton. He can run if ‘forced to’.

It depends on the current and future talent pool at the college level as you mentioned but I don’t watch it enough to comment. If I’m someone like the Bills though and I have a QB who may be slightly too good to easily replace but not good enough to compete. Or I’m not in position to get a pocket passer maybe I go with an athletic draft pick with deficiencies in other areas. Its better than being stuck in a rut and they already have the likes of Spiller and Jackson who played in Gailey’s scheme.

I do not recall the term mobile applied to Warner in the same sentence in my many years watching the NFL. He was no Kosar but he was no Young either.

Surely there will be a revolutionary defensive mind that comes along and develops a scheme that will thwart the spread option. I have read some colleges are using a 4-2-5 or 3-3-5 and almost always employing that extra defensive back, or spy. This 3-3-5 (or similar) is the type of scheme I figure will become the next great philosophy. The NFL coaches are far more brilliant and scheming than NCAA coaches so it's only a matter of time.

Chip Kelly is the new coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, according to league sources. No announcement yet.

I threw out Leak and White, as they were Meyer and Rodriguez quarterbacks respectively. If I am not wrong, White is the all time leading QB rusher at college level. Also, they were winning QB's at college level. Leak won the national championship with the Gators. I don't remember correctly but White would have won or at least featured in a BCS bowl. I remember the hype for him, Noel Devine and Rodriguez from that Mountaineers team.

It's good that you read football outsiders and are presenting arguments from there but the point is that it is not a "New Type". There have been QB's in the past who have used the run as an effective weapon. McNabb had a great arm and also did his share of running. Roethlisberger has used it in two Superbowl winning campaigns (Though I would personally give Steelers defensive solidity more credence). Warner was plenty mobile. The fact is that run has been always used by QB's as an effective weapon. Calling it a "New Type" is incorrect. Exceptions like Brady and Manning do not use it often because they are amazingly good and accurate throwers.

If you look at the last 10 Superbowl winners:
(1) Brad Johnson - 2003
(2) Brady - 2004
(3) Brady - 2005
(4) Big Ben - 2006
(5) Manning - 2007
(6) Eli - 2008
(7) Big Ben - 2009
(8) Brees - 2010
(9) Rodgers - 2011
(10) Eli - 2012

7 teams have QB's with excellent arms. 2 teams won with Big Ben and one with Brad freaking Johnson.

The importance of a good throwing arm has/will trump everything when picking a QB. Like I mentioned before, that is why Andrew Luck will always get picked ahead of RGIII.

I don't know why you are looking at the last 10 years, I'm talking about the next ten years. The strong arm QB who can also run is the new type. Half the teams in the league have mobile starting QB and college is now dominated by quarterbacks who can run.

You keep bringing up Luck being picked over Griffin but there are two things to note. 1) Lots of people were wondering as the season progressed whether the Redskins hadn't gotten the better quarterback. 2) Luck is pretty damn mobile himself.

White's QB rushing record was just broken by Denard Robinson this year and his backfield partner was Steve Slaton, Noel Devine came later. Also, do you have any evidence for Kurt Warner being "plenty mobile" or are you just going to keep asserting it as fact?

For the record, I'm not a huge fan of Football Outsiders. There are lots of things they do that I am not quite convinced about yet. I do think it is a useful system that adds to the conversation and certainly contributes more than analysts who talk about clutch, intangibles and "wanting it more". They aren't exactly cheerleaders for the running QB era, they have just accurately noted that it is the future. Their QB rankings this year have Brady, Manning, Brees as the top three.

I don't understand this debate at all really. Why would added athleticism in the quarterback position ever be a bad thing? The ability to scramble when the pocket collapses and still make a play or run for first downs seems like massive boost.

Lets wait and see what happens in the next 10 years, Eboue - Arsenal fan. I still insist that Arm with mobility is nothing new, you should go back and watch tapes of McNabb in his Eagles days.

I don't know why is it so important for you to label them as the "New Type". I wonder if you actually believe it or is it just for the heck of it.

 McNabb was my favorite NFL player. The Eagles were my second team with him around (I'm a Lions fan by birth so I needed something to keep me interested). Why would I spend all this time debating for the heck of it? Come on.

Game day:D

I reckon its going to be wins for the 49ers and of course the Patriots. Running game will be key for the Patriots I reckon and if its anything as good as it was last week then expect them to run for big yards through the Ravens defence. Ridley has been fantastic and Vereen last week was fantastic against the Texans lets hope it continues tonight.

The only massive improvement we need to see from last week is the kick offs and punt returns, we cant let the Ravens pick up as many yards as the Texans were last week from kick offs and punt returns. That was driving me batshit crazy watching that.

Well after that disappointment I hope the Patriots destroy the Ravens. I want Brady throwing TD after TD, I want to see Wilfork squashing Flacco and Ridley running over Ray Lewis.

That said, I actually think Baltimore will win and set up the Har-Bowl with the Niners. I hope I'm wrong.

You took the words right out of my mouth, so I removed the quote brackets! :)

If the O-line is on form I see the Pats winning, it will be tight but I reckon the Pats should have this on a good day. Lets hope it is so.

Atlanta are doing a great job defensively. Still plenty of time left for a comeback.

Matty Ice has been on fire.

Superb drive. Suddenly it's a 3pt game.

Kaepernick really has long strides when he runs for it, like a fecking horse galloping to the finish line. I expect to see more rushes from him in the second half.

Big TD to check the niners momentum. Should be a terrific second half...

TD niners. This will go down to the wire.

These are the semifinals, right?

Who are the favourites to win their conferance finals (and the whole shebang in the end)?

Akers used to be money. What has happened to him?

That's a soft penalty. He didn't drag his head down nor smash into it. A little contact is to be expected.

TD Niners! They take the lead and I don't see them losing it.

I don't think that's a clean catch, reckon that will be overturned on the review.

Edit: no, ruling stands! Tbh I don't understand the rule but I thought the ground aided the catch.
