Will be interesting what type of player RG3 will be when he returns.

The new type of QBs in the mould of RG3, kaepernick, Newton and Wilson who run as well as they throw are exciting and dynamic but I'll always prefer watching a QB who is a pocket passer like Luck and someone who doesn't rely as much on the run.

I see what you mean, but there's a good reason why coaches would prefer the 'new type'. Defenses have an extra man to watch and it's just a pain for them. It's stupidly difficult to defend against, especially when they introduce elements of the read-option.

All we can hope for now is a Patriots-Niners championship game with Brady winning one more.

I don't care about that. Seattle v Niners in the Division champsionship would probably be the best game of the season. Hopefully it happens!

It is not a new type. A pocket passer will more often than nor succeed against a run and gun QB. Also, the NFL defensive players are tough as nails and there is a question of longevity with running QB's. Taking that many hits on the body cannot be good in the long run.

NFL is a different ball game than college.

Well, players like Kaep and Wilson seem to be doing it well enough without taking that many hits. And they are both just really good passers who also happen to be able to run well, I don't see how that could be detrimental.

Wait if the Packers had won that last regular season game against the Vikings, would this game be played at Lambeau Field?

No. The Niners had to lose their last home game in the last week of the regular season for that to happen.

It would be interesting to see if Smith stays in San Francisco this offseason. There are teams out there who could really use him but will be willing to move to a team that might not have a chance of making the playoffs? It comes down to if he wants to be a small fish in a big pond or a big fish in a small pond?

He must move on and I expect him to move on as and I doubt San Fran will want to pay him big money to be a backup.

Fantastic performance from San Francisco.

Kaepernick was exceptional running and throwing, Packers had no clue what to do with him. He rushed for the most yards in a game by a QB in NFL history. The second half was an embarrassment for GB.

2 brilliant games today. Hopefully the Pats win tomorrow - a 3-0 win would do nicely.

181 yards. By a QB. That's insane.

It is not a new phenomenon. There have been players like them before. McNair, McNabb and Cunningham are names that come up at the top of my head. The point is that faster, meaner NFL defenses, and defensive coordinators will figure them out eventually. Running is a good option to have but not a sustained strategy in the longer run. Pocket passers are and will be more successful, atleast in the foreseeable future.

Pats are my team now since my Giants are out. Brady is my favorite QB and I really hope at least this year he can win another ring. Lets destroy the Texans tomorrow.

I know what you mean. All I was saying was that most of these are, themselves, pocket passers. They just also have the ability to make plays on the run. People like Rodgers and Big Ben add to their pocket play with the ability to scramble and make plays outside the pocket. I definitely don't think you could make it the bread and butter of your offense over a season like Washington tried to do, but it's a good option to have.

I don't know if it's going to work long term, as you say there have been players like that in the past, but this shit works way too well.

forgot about this thread. well...the Pack get manhandled by sf. 31 points and still lost. these new running-qb option-offenses are going to wreak havoc until defenses figure them out. not a bad year for the Packers though. need to draft o-linemen in the draft, more linebackers (inside and out). other than that i think we're fine. maybe next year.

glad manning lost, hope seattle get's beat, and i guess i'll root for the texans to beat the pats.

I don't get why so many people hate Manning. He is a model professional, he is humble, respectful, loyal, one of the best to play the game, rarely says anything controversial against his opponents, played most of his career at a small market franchise, him and his family were the first ones to come out with aid during Katrina, does so much for the community, his SNL skits are hilarious. I could possibly list a 100 other things that go in his favor. There are more reasons to love and respect him than despise him. Still why it is otherwise is I beyond me.

It is just because he is good? Did he beat your team more teams than your beat him? People hate Manning the same way that people hate United. Out of bitterness, jealously and most of all irrationally.

I've mentioned several times in this thread that my disliking for Manning makes no sense. But in the first couple of NFL games I watched, his ads kept coming up and his face just grated on me... I just thought: "who the hell is this douchebag?"

And the rest is history. :p

Come on they are hilarious. Here's an example:

It is the new type. Every few years you have people that say how the new thing won't work and then it comes along and becomes the standard for a while until the league figures it out and it moves to something else.

For defense, it was the 4-3 for many years until the 72 Dolphins went undefeated with the 3-4. That became all the rage until the 86 Bears popularized the 46 defense. After 86, 3-4 died out almost entirely and the Steelers were the only ones to run it. Since then, the Tampa 2 became popular under Dungy and Kiffin and Lovie Smith ran it in Chicago last year. All of these changes were derided as gimmicky until they became popular.

The same thing happens with offense and opposition to the spread. Almost every college team runs a form of the zone read. The zone read became popular back in the late 90s at Northwestern under guys like Randy Walker. Rich Rodriguez and Urban Meyer made their names using many of the same concepts. Chip Kelly has taken the concept to the next level in establishing a dominant Oregon program that had him being offered 3 NFL HC jobs in the past two seasons. Other people talk about how the spread won't work but the Patriots have run spread offenses for years. Peyton Manning had huge success with no huddle ideas that used to be called gimmicks.

The NFL is going to use the quarterbacks that college gives them and the trend is clear. Griffin, Newton, Wilson, Kaepernick can run. Luck, Rodgers, Romo, Raplesberger, Smith run less often but certainly have the ability. Ryan, Dalton, Freeman and Locker aren't statues either. In the college ranks you have the likes of Manziell, Mariotta, Boyd, Scott, Robinson, Manuel, Florence, Shaw who can all run with the ball.

Obviously to be a quarterback in the NFL you need to be able to throw the ball but it is wrong to think that guys like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady will always be the standard for quarterbacking in the league. If there is a new type that works, the NFL will adapt to it. They already are and I think it will just continue to spread throughout the league. Further, there isn't much evidence that running quarterbacks miss more time to injury than pocket QBs. Manning and Brady have both missed full seasons with injury and I'd venture that blindside hits from massive lineman can cause more injury than non-head-on collisions from linebacks and defensivebacks.

I think he'll be at the jets next year.

Manning is now 6-5 at home in the playoffs, including 5 one-and-done exits, and hasn't won a playoff game in sub 40 temperature.

He's the Marino of his era - only exception is he won a Super Bowl.

Im buzzing, I hope the Patriots kick seven bells of shit out of the Texans.

Not this seasons footage but hell Im pumped even more now.

Seahawks will win this.

Atlanta and Ryan need a playoff win, for the #1 seed not many are giving them much attention.

There are a few reasons for that: they've had one of the weakest schedules in the league (only played three 'quality' opponents); and even considering that, they had a lot of close victories which make people question just how much that 13-3 record reflects the quality of the team.

I'm just going by stats here 'cos I haven't seen much of them; I have seen a lot of Seattle however, and to my mind, they can probably beat any team left in the playoffs now, and they've already beaten the Niners and New England. They are the most solid team on all phases in league, but obviously there are massive questions about whether Wilson can perform on such a big stage and against such a good opponent as a rookie. Plus they've had to travel long distances twice now.

If Seattle are on their game, Atlanta should have no chance; but the question is if they will be on it or not.
