A captain has to be the leader on the field and has to be someone who will inspire those around him. I know it's cliched by now, but the Roy Keane-Juventus performance in '99 is the very first image that is conjured up in my head when I think of the words "United Captain". It has to go to that type of person who will help those around them to play better.

Originally, I thought Pogba would have been a decent fit for this, but I've changed my mind. I think Pogba would benefit from having that strong person around him to inspire him on the field. I don't think he's the one to lead, but he is still an important character. The obvious issue with Pogba is his mood. I can just imagine the dressing room feeling flat when he's in a sulk and you can't be doing that as a captain.

What is worrying looking through our squad is that I don't see many characters who would fit that mould. The standout one is probably Harry Maguire. In my opinion, he's the one that either possesses those qualities that a captain of our club needs, or he's the closest fit to that. The only downside I can think of is that he's new to the club. But, if that's really the only thing holding him back, then he won't have to wait too long until he gets that armband.

A captain represents the team in decisions related to game procedures. Before the game, a captain is responsible for submitting her team's roster to the referee and opposing team. At the start of the game, the captains of both teams meet with the referee to decide who kicks off and who defends which side of the field first. Finally, in disputes over calls or questions on rulings, a captain mediates between the referee and the players on her team.
A captain helps mediate a coach's instructions to the players on the team. This can include guiding players on the field toward coach-dictated strategies, informing players of practice schedules or assisting the coach in any general way. Likewise, a captain represents the player's concerns for the coach. Captains will dictate player problems and concerns to the coach and help create solutions to problems.
A good captain is primarily responsible for providing leadership to his teammates, both on and off the field. Captains usually lead conditioning drills and pregame warm-up routines. During games, captains encourage players and promote good sportsmanship. Off the field, captains are responsible for providing a model of etiquette. For younger players, this can include encouraging other players to do well in school and modeling basic good behavior.

Harry "the Beast" Maguire

It should be Maguire as captain right now as he’s very much a leader and leads by example, organises, is very vocal and is the exact type of character needed to lead our team.

If we can get him to sign a new contract then I’d have Pogba as vice captain and De Gea as third choice, they do it like that at Barca so there’s a hierarchy. I don’t want to see his whole club captain and on pitch captain thing anymore as Valencia wasn’t good enough to even be playing let alone captain and it’s now the same with Young.

Sorry, no, Young has been named by Ole, and he should remain club captain for the year as long as he is with the club. It would be a disrespectful to strip it from him just to give it to HM. After this season, it should go to Harry, with Degea remaining as vice, but I am against it going to a new signing signed so close to deadline day. Had he signed early, and been on the pre-season tour and been integrated into the team, then I could see him as vice captain, but not in the circumstance that he arrived at the deadline and had 1 week with the team before season start.

Maguire is without any doubt the captain in waiting, but whether you can become captain instantly I don't know.

With an incredible 6 year deal, with a year option beyond that, plenty of time to take the mantle.
Right now, he has enough pressure with getting himself settled in.

It’ll be unfair to give it to Maguire now since he is still new but next season, I believe he should be the one with McTominay as vice captain.

This has been a question with no answer for too long. Now if Maguire isn’t considered our best option for captain next year, we truly will be blessed by whichever new signing is.

It makes no sense giving it to anyone but Dave. Maguire doesn't have to wear the armband to be a leader.

I don't see any reason to wait to give it to Maguire.

If there was any other reasonable candidate sure, but there really isn't. Pogba pissed on his chips the moment he said he fancied a move, and DDG is too quiet.

As long as De Gea and Pogba stay, it is hard to see anyone else being the captain. I like Maguire, but it would be madness and disrespectful to other players if we make him captain. While McTominay is far from a guaranteed starter.

Next year providing that everyone stays, I would go with De Gea, Pogba and Rashford (in that order).

Giving it to Maguire, when he's only played 1 game for us, would be somewhat shortsighted. Lets see how he does when the going gets tough first.

We've had a number of players who have started well here and faded. Many here rated Bailly as our best CB by miles at the start, and seemed to think he had some untapped potential to be one of the best defenders in the league. Hell, even Darmian has a solid start with us, before fading into total uselessness.

Let's give Maguire a year or two. He's got a hefty step up to make, at a club that has been on a bit of a downward spiral since 2013, and he's shouldering the world record fee for a defender for the foreseeable future. It seems too soon to chuck the armband on top of that too.

Bruno and deservedly so. But would also happily take Casemiro, Martinez and Varane.

It’s gonna be Bruno but does anyone feel he loses his shit easily? Added to it the dramatics.

I would like it be a warrior, like Licha, Varane or even Casemiro.

Some forget that this was arguably our greatest captain

Sometimes you need a hothead to lead the team

It'll be Bruno, but it's nice for us to have a few good options. Casemiro or Varane would be great, Martinez feels like he's nailed on to be captain one day once he has seniority.

You could make a case for Rashford or Shaw as well, but I'm not sure either have quite enough on-pitch presence.

Most likely Bruno but I’d be happy if it was Casemiro.

This thread is cursed. Avoid names of good players. I want Bailly to be our next captain.

We already have our captain. Not much to discuss. Only the deputies are up for grabs. It's actually funny Harry regarded himself as captain last season.
