Next Draft - Ideas and Discussions

Thanks a lot for the clarification. So the games are essentially voted on - that makes sense (I wondered whether you'd financed a hi-tech odds algorithm that gave you a result).

I'm keen to get involved but will wait my turn. My football knowledge earlier than 1996 is very limited though...

I wouldn't worry about that at all. My earliest football memories are from 1990 or thereabouts, but the great thing about these drafts is that it gets you researching all sorts of players from before your time.

Thanks. I'm following this monopoly one to begin with, but tactics and formation wise it seems to me that a fair few posters favour the romance side of the draft, bringing up players i have never heard of or seen yet are able to argue how amazing they are because everyone else is like, ah yeh i member them too!! Memberrrrrr??!?!

:lol: I'm pretty sure the vast majority of us will have picked and argued for a player we've never seen play, whether through laziness or there being no footage available. I know I fecking have anyway. You do genuinely learn alot by participating in these things though, and the most rewarding part by far is when you actually take the time to watch old matches and highlights and come away with a decent grasp on a player. But, yes, there's undoubtedly alot of bluffing and bullshitting involved, but it's all part of this odd little pastime.

There was a FM draft recently, right?

Yeah here was the latest update:

I was thinking something like that but with the 1000 classic players database - I trialed it a year ago and the chap put it in a lot of effort porting over the PESSTATS and getting the database balanced in game with the rest of the players.

It'll be about 3-4 weeks though before I have the time to start this but I can start prepping for it now in my spare moments.

Even before my first ever actual draft (guaranteed to get bulldozed), I'm in!

Aye I'd be in for that.

Its a pretty great idea, I tried this with FM 16 on some draft with one of the custom classic database, it works out pretty well. The only problem I saw was that players attribute were not quite what I think they should be, but it would be hard to get a consensus anyway.
We can do a 90s/2000s draft and then use old CM/FM to run the simulation.

Ok I have written down all your names and Ill tag you in 3 weeks when I start this but that time frame can't be moved up so be patient with me hahah

@oneniltothearsenal

Can you tag me in the FM simulation thing? I can't play but would be interesting to see how it plays out especially if how FM would deal with Edgar's old school formations

In short: The non-proven draft.

You get to draft any number (can be one, two, three - whatever is feasible given the theme) of great players as your main one(s).

The catch is that you cannot use them in a familiar role. You have to utilize their skill sets in positions they are not known for excelling in. And you have to build a team around them which suits their newfound roles.

CR7 as a wingback? Zidane as a libero? Schmeichel as a striker?

Would be mainly novelty/a laugh - but could also be quite interesting in terms of pinpointing what attributes these players actually have.

The obvious method would be to make one of the BLOCKED lists as the starting point: Take yer pick, but you have to field Maradona as a fullback, etc.

Reinforcement rounds: You have to pick from a pool of knocked-out “star” players (as designated). You can choose to field the reinforcements in the roles determined by their former manager - or assign them different roles (but obviously not familiar ones, historically). And you have to field them.

The final teams would, ideally, feature a host of great players all operating in unfamiliar roles.

Moore as a #9 up against Fat Ron as a stopper.

Have to work out possible format flaws and such, of course - but I like the idea.

It's an interesting concept although it would require good faith on the part of drafters as what constitutes a different positions could end up being a point of debate rather than their skill sets in that position.

I think there would be a general consensus on what positions/roles would be ruled out.

That could even be defined beforehand for the players in question, if one goes with a list of usual (blocked) suspects.

That is a very good idea and would avoid the problems.

Nice one and like in the Tactical Draft which was sorta similar I'd say there's no need of a tournament, just one thread where everyone does a big presentation of their entire journey, thought process, choices, tactics and all. There's no need to find a winner as well, in my opinion.

Absolutely - this.

It would be done either as a) a fun thing or b) an attempt to look closer on traits/abilities. Or, I suppose, both a) and b).

One could, of course, tweak the normal format somewhat rather than abandoning it altogether: Vote for the four (or just two) best teams and have them in a knockout, or just a final (with reinforcements as per above)...or whatever, really.

Doing a regular draft, with full knockout format and whatnot, strikes me as a bit too much - it would be a novelty thing.

@Chesterlestreet had a similar idea when i was in newbies, all players to play out of position....didnt get much love but id love something like that :)

@oneniltothearsenal Is it possible to setup FM for one off games? What I'm thinking is that we could do a standard draft but have game simulated by FM and then record the game and upload on YouTube or is that way too hard in FM? If not can you still do the CPU vs CPU in PES? (I suggets the latter as you can have much more tactical flexibility than FIFA). If so that could be an option but I don't know if anyone has created a master file with all the stats from the PES forums. Essentially the idea is to draft as normal and put all the tactics into a simulator press the button, see what happens and upload to watch it. It may though end up as a comment on how unrealistic football sims still are

I am not sure with FM. They have some online modes that might be able to do that but I'll have to check a little later when I can.

@Physiocrat @oneniltothearsenal it's definitely possible in fm, however the subs would have to be out of your control etc.

You just transfer all the players to 2 different clubs. Set up friendlies between them and then record the game.

EDIT: And yes Edgar I'd be up for an auction as long as it had a twist of some sort to it.

Any interest for an auction draft next? Seems like ages since we had one. I have some thoughts....

I am In as well. I'll also offer my service for what @Physiocrat mentioned and run every game in FM simulation if people would like that. I am doing it for many drafts now, its fun to see a team which was decimated on votes winning the actual game. It should be done after the actual draft game and carry no weight for draft result though.

Awesome. I think that would be very interesting

I thought @Edgar Allan Pillow was running the four-way draft.

Any way, I offer my services for the No Mates 46-66 draft. If people don't fancy an auction draft.

Have both options in mind, but just saw that 4-way already has 12 people signed up.

Well, here are the options amongst recent ideas for other managers to choose:

1. Edgar's 4-Way Draft
2. Chester's Unproven Draft
3. Edgar's Auction Draft
4. Physiocrat's No Mates 46-66 Draft
5. ??

I'd like to play one of them drafts on redcafe too. Perisic and Matic have left me bored as feck.
