To get the opinions of you lot and to iron out any issues we can see I started this thread to see if you guys would like ti.

The idea of the draft is that in regards to the all-time greats we have heard the same old stories, seen the same exact footage and used the same quotes in the write-ups for a while now. So to make the next draft more interesting we will take a different and IMO quite entertaining angle on it all.

Every manager will before each game decide a three year consecutive peak for their players. The best/most famous of these years will be disregarded and excluded completely, and only the two other years will count.

Footage, discussion and quotes can only refer directly to performances during these two years and it is up to every manager to provide evidence of a players greatness and in particular abilities.

I.e if I field Pele and I do no research about him, his level will be at 0, he will be the worst player on the field and he won't be a proven dribbler, goalscorer etc etc.

This means that the managers can pick either old/all players or modern players they feel comfortable with, or because they don't have the time/desire to research the older gems. The main goal of the draft is to get some brilliant write-ups that are less focused on one WC tournament - and rather their average performance in a three year scenario.

Your vote won't count unless you post in the thread and show that you have read the rules. The person will be tagged and asked to either re-read the OP or further explain his reasoning to show he read anything.

*Every manager will send in their "used peaks" and write-ups 24 hours before match day and the "used peaks" information will be given to the opponent manager to allow him time to research any changes. The manager won't be allowed to make any substitution to address this until minute 60, because LVG says so.

These 24 hours will be needed to research it as it is very difficult to find good sources, watch games and read up on the opponents "surprise peaks"

*I would love an opinion on this in particular, and I am open to any improvements or changes we can think of.

I assume minute 60 means 16th hour of the game

It will be tough for someone like me who knows little about players from older generation, then again, it is part of the game and rules must be adhered to if someone wants to play

At a first glance, it is a great and fresh idea for a draft. Will think about it more

One question is who decides which is the best/most famous year to be excluded, and how judgement is made?

It looks as though the intended brilliant write-up focuses on individual players (unless you have 2 or more players that played together before, then you can talk about the chemistry in your team). To avoid "mega post" during matches, it probably means we have to start posting the result of our research during draft stage, and link them to the match thread later

I kinda like the idea. But 1. you need a lot of time to research all that and 2. the write-ups will make @Joga Bonito 's walls of text look like tweets.

It would kind of be the idea to have long write-ups that really go in to depth of players abilities. It wouldn't be a draft that attracts a lot of votes, but one that just focuses on being pretty damn good for interesting football discussion.

I think it would be fairly obvious in most cases, but we will pick one(or a group) of great neutrals to do it who aren't playing.

good idea, like it.
it would be fun if we give random 3 years period to managers so we dont pick the periods we are comfortable with + drawing for the periods would be cool :)

Is it a draft or a research competition? Do we get an apple if we win?

Is it a draft or a research competition
Haha. Yeah this one's a really demanding draft, way more time consuming than normal. Having said that if people can put in the required effort we'd see a really good quality of discussions and insight.

I was thinking of hosting an old fashioned draft, something I've wanted for a while now and brought up a few times. Basically all players born in 40s, an addition to the series of drafts we had back then with the players born in 50s, 60s and 70s. Nothing complicated, and hopefully some real hidden gems would be seen after the first few rounds. If it's okay I can do that once this one is done.

It suits both type of tastes. You can pick players that are easily accessible as well, and after the first round someone else will already have done the work on all the players available. So unless you want to add something to it, change peak or research it yourself because you want to - then it will already be done.

If you want you can do it now and I can do this later, would be no worries for me at all.
Up to you mate, I don't want to derail your idea and it's a really fresh and interesting one, so if you want to then go ahead and do it. If you really can't then I can run mine once the Euro one is done.

That is an ambitious idea. Make sure, that every manager is committed to this.

It is! Even if like I stated it will be primarily for the first round, after that you will pick up the players that others has researched and play opponents who's players have been argued against already.

I can do it now! Just wanted to make sure I wasn't stealing your place or anything and you were okay with it.

Complicated idea but I like that, I have an idea too but it is more a research project rather than a draft too.

Have you guys ever done a 'one club man' draft? Relax the rule a bit with 10+ years of first team service. Club performances only.

Or how about a 'Clutch bastard draft' performances in cup finals only.

So we need to find a new twist for every knockout round? That should be possible.

It would be very time consuming. I'm also totally confused on "a 3 year period with peak year excluded" as it's hard to judge 'very good but not peak' performance consistently.

Personally I really find it hard to judge a match with 'old hidden gems' in it. I think the current draft has hit a right balance...known players with few gems in (2 or 3 players max per team from pre-70s)

If you want new player pool, just pick players in last 3 drafts and block them for the next draft. Would force people to look at new options.

On the other hand a South American themed draft could bring some gems too.

The 50s draft was really good so there's mileage in that one.

I'd like to see a current Prem draft with 20 managers, with the goal being to build a team of 18 guys to compete for a season, so that injury prone players are seen as a risk. It's the league most of us know the best.

Bit tired of arguing about greats I've only seen a few games of. Would rather argue about Bolasie vs Lamela or Caulker vs Evans

this.
Every draft is basically the same, dream team vs dream team which is becoming a little boring....give us average players! I think we could easily get up to 20 managers.

Too time consuming for me. Will be interesting to follow, though. Btw, have you ever done a "exclusively sheep draft"? Haha, i'd want to do it.

I think it's important to freshen the pool up. However that's done, I'm less fussed.

Love it. Or a normal PL sheep draft, everyone picks x amount of players to exclude plus extreme criteria so you end up with players that have never been picked before.

I would be interested in this.

I think it would be good to set up a long-term draft ahead of next season based on current players.

So, say, 20 Caf members pick a squad and then play home and away fixtures over the course of a season with results being decided by vote. Players are judged on current form and levels of ability.

The game would then continue for a second season so there would be long-term reward for choosing players with potential.

The bottom 3 clubs at the end of the season are relegated and 3 new managers join, choosing a squad from all remaining available players.

Any managers that lose interest can be replaced, with the new manager inheriting their current squad.

A mid-season transfer window in which each club may trade 3 of their players.

Injuries suffered in real life would make players unavailable for selection.

Isn't that more or less the regular football fantasy manager stuff that you can play all over the internet with thousands of people? I don't mind it if you guys do it, not at all. It just sounds like everyone, who wants to, is playing this already and the discussions would be the same as we have in all the player and team threads on the Caf anyway.
