Apologies if I've missed another thread.

First test of a massive summer starts today.

Compton goes to a peculiar swash shot.

He gets bogged down too easily IMO.

Looks like anothe dead pitch. Apparently the shit weather's meant its just so soft, which would tally with the pitches I've played on this year.

How many test matches are they playing? I'm sure the Champions Trophy is only a couple of weeks away

Two and then a bunch of ODIs and T20s either side of the champions trophy.

Nice passage of play with DRS there.

New Zealand's bowling attack is quite underrated.

I think England have a real problem with the balance of this sides.

Cook, Compton and Trott score too slowly to be 1,2 and 3. I'd perhaps rejig the order and have Root opening and Compton lower down the order. Not only because we would actually put some pressure on the bowlers but also to solidify that middle order.

Root is hardly free flowing either, plus he's not in great form.

Trescothick and Vaughan were England's last really aggressive top3 batters.

Root is not in good form?

His lowest score this summer is 176!

And he is a relatively quick scoring player.

I don't think Compton is good enough to be in the side long term but i agree with the jist of what you are saying.

I would have liked Carberry to be in instead of Nick, but that wont happen now, he is in for the whole summer, as is the batting order.

Yup, great ball and catch.

Good test for Bairstow and Root, should be a good last session.

Just put money on the draw. Weather doesn't look great and England are doing a decent job of wasting a day here.

If (and it's looking a big if) England get to 400, even with the rain breaks, i think they'll win it.

Yeah, but I think even with 400 on the board England will probably have to bat again and at the speed they're scoring they probably won't get there until around tea time tomorrow. Add to that that the weekends weather is looking pretty bad and the pitch and outfield look slow.

England team badly missing KP.

Ridiculous tempo from us today.

Running between the wickets has been poor, and the spinner has got away with a plethora of shite deliveries.

Ian fecking Bell.

130 balls to get to 30, then gets out the over before the new ball.

Bottle job

Harsh on Bell.

I think he has this fair weather player tag attached to him and people only notice his fair weather knocks and are too often quick to jump on him.

Played a match saving innings in the last test against NZ, didn't he?

No, he did alot of ground work then too, and got out just as we needed him to cement our position.

Prior was the main man that day, although he got out with 5 overs left himself!

I even had an image in my head of his dismissal, bizarre. Cheers for the correction.

Top order really needs a re-jig. I would go Cook, Root, Bell, Trott, Pietersen, Bairstow.

There was a bizarre non dismissal which is what you're probably thinking of.

He copped a bumper on the shoulder which looped over his head and hit the base of middle stump, would have been out if not for the extra padding in middle stump for the mic.

I remember that one mate, just had it confused.

Root out, I reckon we need to get at least 250. I'd be surprised if NZ can match that.

Well atleast the wickets move the game forward.

Don't think NZ will bat at this rate. Tough day to bat today though.

What a collapse. What is going on? Knock a few singles for a bit, nothing fancy and get yourself in. Frustrate them and then go for the boundaries. I reckon Finn will have a big innings though

Swann will sort them out.

Or get out very quickly trying :D
