Marca says we've signed the Ricardo from Valladolid for 3 years for 2.25 million euros. He's flying in tonight for his medical tomorrow morning:El Manchester United ficha a Ricardo por tres temporadas
J.G. MATALLANAS. Madrid

Does anyone think the new goaly will be any more than a Spanish Andy Goram ?

Surely, he'll be better than that. Goram was a desperate measure, a much worse scenario than this.

He certainly hasn't eaten as many pies. He went to World Cup as third choice, whereas I don't know where Goram went.

Manchester United's swoop for Real Valladolid goalkeeper Ricardo Lopez Felipe should be completed tomorrow, the player's agent has confirmed.

Pedro Bravo revealed Ricardo, a member of Spain's World Cup squad this summer, is travelling to England today and should be unveiled as a United player in the next 24 hours.

'There is an agreement between both clubs, Valladolid and Manchester United, and with the player Ricardo for him to sign for Manchester United,' Bravo said.

'The player will fly today to Manchester and is set to sign the contract and be presented tomorrow.

'If there are no last-minute complications, the deal can be said to be finalised,' Bravo added.

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been anxious to bring in a new keeper amid concerns over injury to French number one Fabien Barthez.

And a deal for 30-year-old Ricardo, who joined Spanish side Valladolid from Atletico Madrid in 1998, could be under way this afternoon.

The player said: 'It would be an honour to play for Manchester United, the biggest club in the world. It would be an important step in my career.'

Earlier in the day, a Valladolid spokesman said no official offer for the keeper had yet been received, and added: 'Until we receive an offer, Valladolid cannot comment on this matter.

'Valladolid traditionally sell an important player every year - this year we have not sold anyone yet.'

Ricardo is a new player for Manchester United. The international keeper has joined SAF for three campaigns. The English team are to pay 2, 250,000EUROS. He will travel to Mcr tonight and have a medical tomorrow.

His agent said on Radio Marca - " He is very happy, crazy in fact. It was a last minute move, he was very nervous waiting for the fax and can't wait to catch the plane to Mcr."

He then goes on to say something like he couldn't hide his desire to play in the final of the Champions League at Old Trafford or of playing there at the theatre of dreams all year.

Is he bought as a replacement or a 2nd keeper?? He sounds a bit too happy...

i would imagine that as barthez is out for the time being he and carrol will be given chances to prove themselves and make a stake for the no1 slot for the time fab is out. obviously carrol has got a head start on the new guy but i think he'll be given a fair chance.

I think i rate Ricardo higher than Carroll right now.Carroll has played decent but right now we need a experienced keeper.Of couse it takes 1-2 weeks for Ricardo to settle in but then i think he can give Fab a fight for the no 1.I havent seen him play but i have heard of him before and it was good stuff i heard.I just hope it isnt another Taibi.

How can you possibly rate Ricardo higher than Carrol when youve never seen him play and you are uncertain that hes not nother Taibi?
If i said we were signing "Jóse Amando"* from Racing Santander would you rate him higher?

*named player being fictional.

Havent been really impressed with Carroll he has played good against weak teams but he wasnt solid against Chelsea.

Jordi Cruyff?...I know he's Dutch but he grew up in Spain...has a Catalonian(?) moniker too.

did you think he wasn't solid only because he let in the two goals? i certainly wouldn't blame him for the two goals...

Quite the opposite in my opinion. Carroll has impressed me no-end this season, already. He looks confident, solid and comfortable. Whatsmore, the defence seem to have more confidence in him than in Fab.

I still maintain that Roy has a realistic chance of fighting for Fab's place this season.

Another keeper does add depth to the squad, and the cover we need. It also keeps Roy and Fab on their toes.

It's amazing how, yet again the player United are interested in becomes the fans favourite...

I'll keep saying it until someone listens..
Roy Carrol will be a better keeper than Shay Given..given time (no pun intended)

Apart from Peter Schmeichel ive never really trusted foreign keepers..

I've read on the Rednews website that Fab had played without problem in a friendly against Bolton.

Carroll is what he is.....a back-up goalkeeper in the mould of RVG.
Competent for the most part if not kept in the firing line for too long.
Obviously Ricardo(?) will leap-frog Carroll in the pecking order...at least I'm sure that is the plan.
What is more interesting is how such a signing would affect our very own vertically challenged, gauloises chain-smoking,physically comic and premier custodian?

To my mind this signing says more about Barthez than Carroll. He's obviously a liability where fitness in is concerned and some may say where perfoirmance is too. But first and foremost is the fact that Barthez appears to be having more and more trouble with injuries, As a consequence we really had no option but to bring another keeper in given the back up to Carroll. I think Carroll will retain the number one spot until he has a mare or makes one or two errors in a match at which point Ricardo will get his chance.

We'll see when he has 17 shots to face against the likes of Henry and co.

Anyway, if Fab feels he has not the confidence of Fergie anymore, then he'll leave. He will prefer to earn the quarter of what he earns here instead of staying on a bench (impossible for him). It won't be the end of the world for him. He has already won everything, including the champion's league, and I'm confident he will bounce back elsewhere. And it's what everyone expects here no ? :(

Look at last season. He played six away games in the EPL, conceeding 2 goals. Fab played the other twelve and let in 26. You do the math.

Edit: You'd best do the math as I seem to think 19-6=12... back to school for me!

he should seriously give up the fags, research has lately shown tht smoking/ nicotine can cause back problems & muscular problems.
Nicotine has allways been known to be harmful to blood vessels and therefor causes slower rehabilitation but its recently been discovered how harmful it is to muscles, which could explain a lot his problems.

I see that Mr Redpie/buzzett has come back again, soooo happy to see Fab in trouble.

You can say what you want, at least he has a name, and he had one before coming here, one thing you'll never have, jealous loser.

The first year Barthez had an excellent record.

Carroll also conceded 5 goals with Northen Ireland...

He played 6 games, but never against top sides. And it's not the same thing to play some games than to play twice a week the whole year.

I wish he gave up smoking too but he's not such a big smoker. I don't think it's the reason of his injuries. He trains very hard and he never wants to stop. Probably after the holidays he has worked to hard after his absence.

I hope we are not signing another Taibi

I wonder just when the penny dropped for Fergie with Barthez?...from World Cup Champion to injury-prone chump...
But surely he has to be the best goalkeeper in the World?...he plays for France and we went and bought him...
A worse buy than Veron?...hmmmm...that deserves a thread all of it's own...

I think a bit of profile-editing is in order here... the world must know of this fool ;)
