Have you made your decision Shaydun? Did any of the laptops I linked strike your fancy?

Thread hijack time!

I'm currently looking for a new laptop. I'm unsure of what to get thats in my price range, think I've found a gooden, but I still can't decide. Help us out.

Found a HP Envy 15 refurbished for £630. Love the look of them, and have got good quality specs. Refurbished isn't really an issue for me.

Quad-core Intel Core i7
4GB RAM
320GB HDD
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4830 (albeit not the newest graphics card, would still do me I reckon)

Are there any laptops around that can beat these specs for the price? I don't really want to spend any more than 630. But want to get the best deal possible.

No no's to Acer and Dell. Will be used for video editing, gaming and general usage, so dedicated graphics is a must as well as 4GB of RAM.

Can you find the same performance cheaper, or better cheaper, or slightly less performance for much cheaper?

Serious answers now, I'm not spending £1,600 on that. I could get miles better for the same price if I even wanted to go that high. Trying to beat the one I posted at £650.

Urm...I don't think you could. Link me to a single laptop even comparable.

And just to go even crazier, you can get laptops with 32 GB of RAM here: http://web.eurocom.com/EC/ec_model_config1(1,219,0)

Maxed out, you're looking at £10,000+. :D

Someone find me a fault in buying this for just under £500 (converting currencies etc.) for normal use with the odd game here and there: HP Pavilion dv6-6050ee Entertainment Notebook PC (LL058EA) specifications - HP Home and Home Office products

It looks good - almost too good to be true, actually. I can't find any reviews of this product but £500 is ridiculously good for that laptop.

Twice the ram, bigger video ram, 3d screen and a biger hard drive, 300 quid cheaper from Dell at £1339 where as yours is £1600 plus. There you go Biccy, now behave. That's massively overpriced for what it is, it's all this innivotive touch screen macro shit that you're paying for there.

I suggest you stop being stingy and splash the cash because otherwise you wont be getting a "future proof" gaming laptop.

How is the ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650 for gaming?

I can get for £400

Intel® Core™ i7-740QM processor
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Memory: 4GB
Hard drive: 640GB
Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650

But I'm a little lost with ATI cards. Never used them before.

for 400? That's dirt cheap, who off?

5650 is ok, it'll run modern games but not particularly well.

Can you list any graphics cards that typically come in laptops that will run modern games well? So I know which numbers to look out for? I know nothing about radeon cards. Cheers if so.

It was an Acer Aspire 5942G that I can get with some discounts.

What you really need is something with a Sandy Bridge processor, as those are significantly faster, use less power and run cooler. Something like i3-xxxxM, i5-xxxxM or i7-xxxxM (4 digits, then M).

But I'm a little lost with ATI cards. Never used them before.

Im using one currently (5850). It can still run all the games at max.

Suffice so say they're quite good if not better than nvidia.

Ah that explains it, don't get an Acer.

Well the 5650 is the basic of the 5xxx range, it'll run modern games fine. The 57xx is obviously better, and then the 5850 is great, I've one on my desktop (an extreme version though) and I haven't experienced a single game I can't run on max gfx so far.

But laptops are a whole different ball park to desktops and I've never seen the point of getting one as a "gaming rig" unless you're willing to spend massive, because gfx cards in laptops bump up the price far more than anything else, and they're not as good as their desktop equivalents either.

1 Barracuda 7200.12 Hard Drive - 500 GB - 7200 rpm - 16 MB - SATA
1 Hyper TX3 CPU Fan
2 XMS3 2 x 2 GB DDR3-1600 PC3-12800 CL9 Memory Kit
1 Phenom II X4 955 - 3.2 GHz, 6 MB L3 Cache, AM3 socket - 125W - Black Edition (HDZ955FBGMBOX)
1 TL-WN722NC 150 Mbps Wireless-N High Gain USB Adapter
1 870U-G55 - AM3 Socket - 770 - ATX Chipset
1 AD22300QN1M PureAV Blue Series HDMi Cable
1 Radeon HD 5850 Xtreme - 1 GB GDDR5 - PCI-Express 2.1

Got all that for around €400. Already had a case, dvd-rw and 600w PSU, so if you added those it's around €500 and runs absolutely everything up full.

Course it's big and all... so yeah ... laptop ...

Hmm, hijacking this thread as I saw a new PC thread a while back but my search function is broken, every time I search anything it immediately comes back 'no results found'

I now want to go desktop instead of laptop, I didn't have space for it originally as the space it's currently sat in was going to be used for something else but now I'm starting uni I need the PC there with the desk so may as well go desktop over laptop as it will be used for gaming too.

So so far I've seen the below, I wanted i7 but then I heard the 2500K i5 wasn't far behind the 2600 i7, can anyone confirm?

Sandyfoot Intel Core i5 2500K @ 4.5GHz
Xigmatek HDT-S963
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Gigabyte Z68AP-D3
8GB Corsair DDR3 1600mhz XMS3 (4x 2GB)
1TB S-ATAII 3.0Gb/s
NVIDIA GeForce GT 440 1GB

£560

Is this decent? I already have my own 24" monitor, gaming mouse and keyboard, plus my own sound card from my old rig. I reckon I'd need a better case than what it comes with, and I'm unsure of the GFX card, £560 seems too cheap to me overall, I have choices of GTS 450 1GB for £20 more, GTX 550 Ti for £46 more, GTX 560 for £93 more. It's been a while since I built a PC and my last one ran a 3 way SLI with 9800GTX's. Now I have no idea which GFX cards are shite, budget, mid-range, good etc.

It's mainly for uni work when I start again, but I also want it to run BF3 and TOR properly on as high a setting as feasible with no performance issues.

It's good except for the graphics card, which is quite rubbish. I think the tri-SLI 9800 GTX is probably better than any of the other graphics cards. It depends on what you want your PC to do, really... The GTX 560 Ti (the Ti is important) or 6950 is a good for mid-range gaming, whilst the GTX 570 Ti and 6970 still good value for money.

And yes, use the i5-2500K unless you are into extreme threading or have more money than sense.

Hehe, fair enough, how is the motherboard? I can't run my tri 9800 in this one as my ASUS Striker II Formula and Q9550 have packed in unless I purchase another one seperately. I've actually just checked and I also have the option of GTX 560 Ti 1GB for £123 more, GTX 570 for £203 more, 6970 for £214 more and GTX 580 for £328 more.
