New Chief - "No Major Spending Required"

Manchester United: No need for lots of signings says new chief

Incoming Manchester United chief Ed Woodward says there is no need for "a major retooling" of the Premier League champions.

Manager Six Alex Ferguson had spoken of a planned summer recruitment drive.

But Woodward, who will replace David Gill in July, said: "There's incredible depth. We could put two first teams out with 11 internationals in each.

"We have a young squad, each now a year older. We're very comfortable with the make-up of team and squad."

Last week, Ferguson responded to questions about a link with Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski by claiming he would always find room for quality additions to his squad.

But despite releasing impressive financial figures on Thursday, which showed year-on-year turnover for the first nine months of the financial year has risen 13.1% to £278.1m, despite not including the new £120m, eight-year sponsorship deal with AON, Woodward said the club had no intention of making dramatic changes.

"I wouldn't expect there to be a major retooling of the squad," insisted Woodward, who will retain his title of executive vice chairman when he assumes out-going chief executive Gill's responsibilities.

"It has been a phenomenal season. We are a long way ahead in the Premier League and, whilst I wouldn't describe the way we got knocked out of the Champions League as luck, things could have gone differently in that game."

Woodward, 40, is a former investment banker who joined United in 2005 and has mainly concentrated on managing the club's vast debt and maximising income.

United's broadcast and matchday sectors have increased 21.7% and 34% on the corresponding three months in 2012, whilst gross debt now stands at £367.6m, still a vast sum but a decrease of 15.9% since 30 June last year.

Seems to not be entirely in agreement with Fergies previous statements? Probably just a bit of bluffing/positioning to avoid us paying over the odds though - if we announce we are going on a massive spending spree this summer then you can instantly add £5-10m on to any prices.

I hope that what they are meaning is that whilst the squad by and large is fine and there is no need for a major overhaul, that we may still go for 1-2 high quality signings to put the icing on the cake, as it were.

Standard negotiating tactic - don't give selling clubs the impression you're desperate. Also, he's right, there's no need for major restructuring.

Christ, maybe find something else to get annoyed about, because this is nothing unique to United nor is it really anything that important.

I'm not annoyed by it....just tired of it.

And I disagree about it not being important. Everything released to the press that relates to the club's policies, financial situation etc. are significant.

Perhaps just being realistic?

Thing is....I'm not really sure anyone knows what is realistic for United anymore in the transfer market. We can only get an idea, but no clear picture.

We were willing to (and did) spend a lot of money last summer and i expect the same this summer, albeit on just 2 players maximum.

Bale and a central midfielder really would be amazingly perfect for us.

would love Bale here...but think it will be the polish lad and a proven tackling midfielder. Zaha coming here probably proves we are covering our wings issues.

If we get Bale we would need to get rid Valencia which I would not mind...think Anderson is gone too. Nani?? don't know.

Bale would improve our team so much more than Lewandoski IMO. Add another 20 goals and 10 assists to our season this year to our wings and we may well have been in a Champions League semi final and FA Cup final. Whereas I don't think Lewandoski would have done that much better than RvP. That's not even taking into account a new midfielder. We would have a frightening attacking side with Bale and a quality CM.

-------Carrick--New CM------
-Bale-------Rooney-----Kagawa
-------------RvP------------

Bale at £50-60 million is a lot of money but I think worth it. Only going to get better as well. Buying Lewandoski for £25 million would just be so strange when we have two quality strikers and two quality back up options, and ignoring our terrible wing play this season. A winger and a CM makes such obvious, plain sense if we are to buy two players this window as SAF has said.

2 players both CM for me. We have more than enough on the wings and should ship out some players before we buy in that position. We don't have enough CM's.
Umm not so sure. Our recent interest in players suggest that we will very likely be again interested in a wide playmaker/winger.

I hope we go for Bale/Ronaldo. We need someone to bring back the flair to our attacking play.

I still hold out hope that we will actually sign a central midfielder, but I doubt it will be anyone proven. Probably a youngster?

Yeah but but in my opinion we either ship wingers out to make space or keep things as they are and try to get more from them, the problem is we have too many players in the squad in that position who are not pulling their weight as well as players who naturally play behind the striker/AM who can be move wide at a stretch (Kagawa, Rooney, Welbeck, Giggs etc).

Which means that we have an abundance of wide players even before you consider Zaha arriving at the club(and we certainly can't just stick him in the reserves like we have done with Powell as he has been playing at a higher level and for longer and is 20 and player of the season is his respective league). What we are lacking this season is perhaps the quality performer we currently need in that position I think thats where Kagawa will probably eventually find his home for us, starting on the left and drifting inside whenever he likes. You then have the question of the right side where you either have to decide whether Valencia plays there and you wait for him to get better knowing that you are waiting for the same from Ashley young(who admitedly can also play on the left) and knowing that you have a highly promising 20 yr old in Zaha who just might be able to make the difference even in his debut season.

When you also throw Welbeck into the mix as a potential wide player you begin to get the picture of how we are overloaded in this position but simply currently lack a star performer, that can change even with no new additions simply by encouraging the players available to raise their game.

On the other hand if Carrick gets injured in CM we are fecked, and even with him there we lack a truly class partner for him, for me its two CM one with ball winning qualities who both play with him and cover for him(Matic or Strootman seem to fit the bill) and one top class player who can play alongside him further up the pitch, the only way we need only one CM addition is if Powell steps up next season and I think that might be too soon.

Seems to be a case of good cop bad cop going on here , with SAF going semi muppet and Ed Woodward down playing it.

Yep, we have an excellent "squad", but lack a player from the wings with true match winning ability like we used to have. Bale would be an awesome signing

I really believe Rooney is a gonner, I think Anderson will go, maybe Nani, that's got to be around £40m. Bale would be unreal here, playing in Rooneys role, like he has in the latter days at Spurs. I'd love to keep Rooney, but his body language is just like Beckham and Ruud. And hoping we sign a rugged CM.
