Asafa Powell just ran at 9.74 in a competition in Italy. I just saw it live 3 mintes ago.

Not bad.

Taken it back off Tyson Gay then... What's the next quickest time? I bet he beat him by a millisecond or something...

Averaging 23 mph from a standing start... that's just not human!

Powell smashes 100m world record

Jamaican Asafa Powell broke the world 100m record by clocking 9.74 secs at the IAAF Grand Prix in Rieti.

Powell, the bronze medallist at the recent World Championships, set the new record in the second of two heats.

The race was run with a strong following wind but it was within the limits set by the International Association of Athletics Federations.

"That's what happens when I start to listen to the coach," said Powell, who appeared to ease up before the line.

He first set the previous record of 9.77 in Athens in June 2005 and last year equalled it on two occasions in Gateshead and Zurich.

Impressive running, too bad he failed at the world championships.

The most impressive world record set in running has to be Michael Johnson doing the 200m in 19.32, think he beat the previous world record by nearly a third of a second, amazing run.

I'd say at least 20. What was the record 10 years ago?

Probably Donovan Bailey's record of 9.84 back in 1996 IIRC. So in 11 years 0.1 off the world record has been beaten.

That is absolutely astonishing. I never knew it was that low.
I read somewhere that Luiz Ronaldo has been clocked under 10s over 100m on the pitch chasing after the ball. Unbelieveable...

How long do you think until 9.5 limit? 25-30 years? more? never?

If you're talking a one off, as in, a one off amazing athlete that could do it, then it could be anytime from the next race onward. If you're talking about the standard as a whole improving, then there's no way, unless we develop genetically engineered athletes to compete, the standard will fluctuate as it has done for the last decade or so.

Recall Ben Johnson smashing the record in 88. 9.83, I think. Amazingly he gave up near the end and started celebrating. I bet he could've got under 9.8 back then. Yes, I know. Drugs. But they're all on it.

Yeah that was an amazing run, here it is:

I'm sure he clocked 9.79 once as well.

That Johnson record was amazing, he was so far ahead it wasn't even funny. The closest anyone has got since is 19.62 and that was by Tyson Gay. I really felt for Frank Fredericks though in those Olympics of 1996. Going into the Olympics the world record for 100m was 9.85 and for 200m was 19.66. He ran 9.86 in the 100m and 19.68 in the 200m. If you are a couple of milliseconds off the world record in these kind of races usually you have a great chance of winning gold but he ended up finishing 2nd in both as Bailey ran 9.84 to break the 100m world record and Johnson 19.32 to smash his own world record by 0.34 of a second!

Doubt Ronaldo could run that fast, he was fast but I reckon Henry at his peak could of beaten him in a race.

My daughter was born that olympics,I remember staying up for loads of it,have always followed athletics/olympics...god I remember the lovely olga korbut...:D

Yeah, class olympics.

And I think you're right, DJ JazzyGee.

Ahh. 9.79. I bet he could've smashed the current record. Probably in that race, if never started to celebrate and look around.

He's got 2 world records and your criticising him ?

I'm not criticising him as such. To hold the WR is absolutely fantastic and he's broken it a few times now, but on the big stage (Olympics, World Championships) he bottles it.

Take the world championships that have just finished, he cruised through the heats and looked good but then bottled it in the final and finished 3rd. Same thing happened in the olympics where he came 5th.

Great athlete's win medals not just records.

He always fails in big tournaments though.

Well he's still quite young, if he fails in the next Olympics then fine, your probably right, but I'd give him a bit more time before calling him a bottler.

He's the same age as Gay but he's shown nowhere near the level of maturity or the ability to cope with pressure that Gay has. When you see Gay line up on the blocks for a final you know he's going to win, he looks so confident and when he's racing his technique is flawless.

Powell lines up for a final and he looks tense, when he runs he tightens up very early. Powell is a faster runner than Gay (obviously) but he has a serious lack of confidence when it matters.

If he can overcome that then he can become the best. But his time is running out, he will be 29 at the next world championships.

I agree, Gay has this unnatural self belief and confidence. Whereas Powell has a lack of confidence, but I would think that this new WR may instill some real confidence into him and he will come good at the Olympics. If not, it will be a real shame for a man of that talent not to win an Olympic medal, much in the same way as Paula Radcliff.

For those of you who haven't seen this new WR race Powell slowed down and was jogging(by his standars) the last bit.
