Netherlands consider scrapping offside in amateur football to end violent rows

Amateur football is full of dickheads and wannabe hard men who think their shite team winning is the most important thing in the world.

The other year a guy got sent off in a league near me, fecked off to his car, then came back with a meat cleaver with the intention of using it on the guy he'd tackled to receive the card.
Very allegorical.

Remove goal posts as well and replace them with sandals. And the height will be adjusted based on the GK's jumping prowess to be fair towards shorter GKs

At that point, just suspend the players and teams. That's the best solution.

We have similar issues at amateur level in Germany. My best friend is a ref and the abuse he has to take is disheartening. There simply is not enough respect for referees out there. And it’s really angering me, because they do this mostly for free, to enable others to enjoy their hobbies.
The general attitude by many, many sports fans towards referees is nothing but shameful. And that includes the discussions on boards like this one.

I think Wenger said the same thing I've wanted to see for ages.

If any part of the body is in line with the offside trap - doesn't matter if your belly, foot or head is in front of the offside trap - if something as little as the toe is in line with the defender then it counts as onside.

I think there will be way more action and goals.

Totally agree with this

Underage soccer isn't much better.

I've been to a few u10 girls tournaments with my daughter and her team. I've seen grown men at these things almost coming to blows over throw ins, it's ridiculous carry on.

But some people just can't help themselves.

I had it at my Under 5s! One dad in particular was protesting everything even though it was a simple 5 minute game. He never came back after his wife shouted at him for being pathetic in front of everyone

That's ridiculous.

In Ireland, well in our leagues anyway, we pay the referees and the match fee gets split between both teams and the players usually pay about €3-5 every game to make up the money, from underage all the way at amateur level. They get €40-80 depending on match level and if there's linemen involved that fee could be could go up to €150.

It's more than abuse here at times. A linesman was killed a few years ago and refs or players being beat near to death happens as well. Some clubs may as well be put on a criminal organisation list.

Scrapping offside will have feck all effect on it. These people want to be violent, they'll find another excuse.

Really not the worst idea in the world, but nothing to do with linesmen getting abused.

Playing without offsides is still football. It's different, but it's still football.

I play 5/7 aside and without offsides is fine. I play 11 aside and offsides is still fine, but yes, every offside decision has arguments.

In Germany they get a little money that’s barely enough to cover the cost for fuel. That’s about it.

Oh, and free entry to most football games. Which is probably the sole reason why most refs still do this.

Yeah, we also have violent incidents. Don’t think anyone’s been killed yet. But that feels like a matter of time. My friend was actually involved as assistant in a game, where the ref was hit by a fans bottle and plenty cops had to show up to get everything under control. It’s frightening. And yet we take the service these people offer for granted.

I think paying the referees a reasonable amount for games, means there's a level of responsibility on both sides to play the game fairly. We don't get a lot of that kind of behaviour in our leagues.

Having played probably hundreds of amateur games as an adult I've always maintained that I have no idea why anyone would want to be a referee at that level, and particularly at the level just below where you get linesmen. Two teams who think you are supporting the other team and a bunch of pricks in the audience who thinks it's fair game abusing someone who's just trying to facilitate a game of football.

My Dad was a referee, and one of my earliest memories is being locked in his changing room with him after a Sunday league game because some of the players were trying to attack him
