Nemanja Vidić Exclusive: How I Signed For Man Utd

Absolute Legend, That brought back fun memories, this is my day made.

I totally forgot he played for Inter, so weird.

Watching him leap out of defensive to attack a cross / long pass / even ground pass was actually one of the most pleasing sights for me as a United fan. Before his arrival I always felt you could run our defence a bit ragged especially if you had a strong atheltic attacker or two. Vidic (plus Evra) changed that completely.

""I think you get credibility with your way of playing, with your knowledge, what you do in training. You don;t get credibility by wearing an armband and now I'm going to tell people what to do. You have to be example and you have to do well and then to speak to other people. I think that's what captain has to do"

A real United captain.

Its also interesting to not that he was on a winter break for a month before joining us in January.

Another reason why I hate the lazy comparisons people make with new signings in their first six months when they say "but Vidic struggled too". The circumstances surrounding his arrival couldn't have been worse. With a preseason under his belt he was flying the next sesson.

Great great player and I wish for more personalities like him in the side.

Surprisingly funny guy. Thoroughly enjoyed the first part, looking forward to catching part 2 later on.

Terry and Carvalho were great but Rio and Vida are well ahead. I’d say there’s a big distance between those pairings.

Agree too.

Tony Adams and Martin Keown were good as well (leaving rivalry aside, haha) but I will classify them more with Bruce-Pallister, heh.

The bit about Moyes shows what a fecking useless cretin he was. So far out of his depth.

Great interview, the bit about Moyes was interesting and shows why things went so wrong if he couldn't even tell the players how he wanted them to play.
Loved the end where Rio got Sir Alex on the phone, if he could get him on for an interview that would be amazing

I always view the Rio vs Vidic- who was the better argument- a bit like the Keane vs Vieira one in that both were amazing but you can probably point to clear periods where one was better than the other. For Rio, during 06-08 he was the better of the two. In fact aside from Ronaldo, you could argue he was our best player in 08 with some absolutely stellar performances against Liverpool, Roma and Arsenal.

Vida from 08-09 onwards was our best defender. That ridiculous game against Liverpool aside I don't think i've seen another defender dominate games the way this guy did, and I think he was the only ever present defender in that run of clean sheets that was a record at the time. He did the same again in 10-11 and was probably our best player that season too.

We need to bottle some of his courage, determination and commitment and inject it into half the players at united today!
They are living off the coat tails of legends like Vida.

Very good interview. Love how honest and direct Vida is.

Is it me or is that Ste Howsen guy is incredibly annoying?
He was just fanboying like I'm sure many of us would. What did you find so annoying though? As he and Joel just let them get on with it mostly

He was the offroader next to Rio's Rolls royce. 2 defenders who were very different and complemented each other. Him and Evra joining were the catalysts for another successful period under Ferguson.

There's a lot said in that 1st interview that players should be listening to, taking note and carrying out.... You can tell why that partnership and these players were as good as they were...

Tbf attacking quality in lesser teams is a lot better these days due to the coin in the game.

Need not it be said that lower PL team are now filled with top players from Spain that might have otherwise made their way up the good chain
Just not true. I’d argue the opposite.

Just not true. I’d argue the opposite.

Indeed - Blackburn had Benny McCarthy and Santa Cruz, City and Bolton had Anelka, West Ham (briefly) had Tevez, Viduka and Hasselbaink at Boro etc. There was far more quality throughout the league then.

Look at the garbage even United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal have up front these days relative to that lot.

The bit about him walking into a club and making faces at having to listen to loud hip hop when he likes rock music makes me like him even more

Still can't believe Fergie described vidic as a 'dour' person in his autobiography. As much as I love SAF, I didnt think that was a very nice thing to say about a player who brought you so much success!

A person can be dour and very talented at their profession at the same time

I've never understood that one either. It's not like he truly struggled. Sure he wasn't at the level that he would later reach, but he showed enough we were all fairly happy with him and were cautiously optimistic about the future.

Evra on the other hand...he truly did struggle. After a few months if someone had told you he'd go on to be one of our greatest ever fullbacks you'd think they were insane.

Probably in the podcast, but if you don't have time to listen, love this article

They don't make them like him nowadays! Although Licha comes across similarly. Does anyone know what he's up to nowadays?

The Rio interview starts with what he's up to now

Moved back to Serbia with family. Got a construction company

Also ran for Serbian FA presidency but pulled out as it's an old boys club. Will get into football again at some point but not sure what capacity, he also did the UEFA football administration or something course
