Nemanja Matic

Best DM, holding mid, CM call him what you want in the EPL, and close to top in the world.

He makes the CHE tick over not Haz, Costa and Fabregassed

I think calling him the best in the world is a little premature, but he is a very good player in excellent form.

Erm no one said best in the world. best in the premier league... Yes, at the moment he is the most consistent player in the league and a key player for Chelsea. Nothing premature about that, just look at the stats.

Chelsea has the best defensive record this season and its partly because of this guy. He dictates the game, physically dominate, can pull off some decent passes, decent in the air and can offer bit offensively too. He's a young Carrick in a way, simple but intelligent.

In the world I'd say.

You were saying?

Matic is a fantastic player, but it's nothing new to what Carrick has been doing for us over the years. It seems that he's only starting to get the reignition now, when he's been pivotal to us being so successful in the last 8/9 years.

Don't say this too loudly, you will upset the flavour of the month fan club.

It's hard to compare the two. Carrick is better at passing and Matic is better defensively. Both need space and can't play under pressure. I also think Carrick was never as mobile as Matic is. That guy can cover a lot of ground.

Matic is definitely a better player than Carrick. He's only 26 remember, the same age Carrick was when he joined us. If you compare them both at that age then Matic kills Carrick hands down.

Obviously age and experience have improved Carrick in various ways since then but you can hardly hold that against Matic at this stage. Plus that is countered by Matic's physical superiority anyway.

One: that's nonsense. Carrick was an integral part of one of Fergie's best teams.

Two: they're different players. Would you compare Pirlo, Alonso, Busquets etc., with Matic? No.

Three: Carrick's passing and vision is better than Matic's.

The two should be played with each other, not instead of each other.

He's clearly better than Carricks ever been. If Carrick had ever been this good then he'd have never been a polarising figure.

It's just absolute bullshit. I'm sorry. Anybody who thinks that should take a month out of their schedule and watch a huge sample of the games Carrick has played in for United. If, after that, they still think Carrick's never been as good as Matic, they should stop watching football.

Fully agree in every single way. It's flavour of the month these days to over hype the new consistently good top level players, yet forget just how good the older generation were at the same job.

Annoys me we could have had him and possibly Fabregas last year.

Oh, come on. It's still early days. Matic hasn't played a full season yet. Let's see how he deals with League Cup, FA Cup, PL and CL-games all piling up. The hard part has just begun.

I still think he could end up at the level of Ivanovic. More than a decent player, but probably not amongst the best. ( Which would be still great for Chelsea.)

A) A lot of people have been integral parts of great teams over the years, that doesn't automatically make them outstanding players though. Carrick certainly wasn't as good when he came here as Matic is atm, regardless of how integral he was to our particular team.

B) They are indeed different players but that why would that mean mean we can't compare them? For example, Cesc is a very different player to Carrick too but he's also clearly better. They don't need to perform identical roles for us to say that.

C) Carrick's vision and passing may indeed be better than Matic's (having had years of experience improving it) but that doesn't automatically make him the better player. The likes of Gerrard and Lampard may were inferior to Carrick in several ways too but that doesn't mean they weren't obviously better players generally.

This is a fair point, Matic still has to prove he can keep this form up. I'd be quite surprised if he doesn't though.

Matic was on our radar IIRC. Still pissed me off that we didn't buy him. And it was down to A - . Fergie was too obsessed with Scholes-type midfielder, B - feck Moyes.

He's a great athlete so I'm not so sure why you think some sort of match pile up will affect him. What's going to drop his level? Please do tell. Ivanovic is a utility player and Matic is a world class footballer, two totally different situations.

What a lot of shit that is, really you can't be serious! Carrick is a completely different type and much more refined. Matic I'm a huge fan and he's certainly suited to this league with his physicality. But let's see how many European cup finals he will be integral in getting to!

Regarding the stats, is it not likely that he didnt play those games because they were smaller games where the youngsters usually play a bigger part, which also weakens the team? Just a fast reflection.

Better than Carrick has ever been?
My god. People do like to exaggerate. Sure, maybe he is better than Carrik right now but I hate when posters post stuff like the sentence above....

He doesn't have anywhere near the passing range Carrick does, that's where Carrick has made his name.

In terms of interceptions and tackling Matic is boss though. He breaks up play so well.

I remember we were looking for a midfielder, Moyes comes out and says there are no good ones on the market, a few days later Chelsea sign this guy.

Does he tackle much ? I have no idea about precise stats but I do have noticed many interceptions by good positioning.

He made that cruncher of a tackle on Di Maria against us. Think it might've pretty much shook him out of the game.

Completely different players. Carrick is a galaxy away in terms of passing range, composure and control, Matic is twice the player in terms of physical dominance and mobility.

I'd have both in my team.

They'd be a terrific partnership. Carrick has been absolutely brilliant for the best part of a decade but at this moment in time Matic is near perfect in his position.

As good as Matic has been, he's never reached a level similar to Carrick's best season for us. He has so much time to achieve that and more.

It's like any good defender. You don't need to go sliding in if you position yourself correctly and read the passes. All the best defenders win tackles cleanly like that (Rio, Hummels etc ). He can definitely way in with a big slide tackle when required though. His physical stature is also very imposing.
