What is so funny? Spending 50m on a 29 year old Matic after just saying we will not pay any price clubs want us to pay? Yeah that is funny. Of course if it's true regarding the price, this guy Matt Law is a Chelsea mouthpiece.

You answered your question. Price is reported highest as it's from Chelsea mouthpiece. Also if Matic helps us in winning the league then none will care about fee.

Loving how angry some people are getting about how the club spends its own money.

This is not Van Gaal time where captain will always play.
I understand being captain does'nt mean you play every game regardless of form etc, but for me the captain should be someone who is LIKELY to be playing most match's, I think the only quaranteed starters are DDG, Tony V, Pogba, Herrera & Lukaku, I know we are going off topic here, so back to the discussion, if Matic does sign, I imagine Carrick won't play much at all.

My only worry with this signing is if we get Griezmann next season then more often or not he will play as a SS or no.10 position then pogba will again have to play in a midfield two. Last season we saw he grew into the role playing in a midfield two with herrera. In big games if we are going to play with 3 in midfield then i would like to play Tuanzebe in holding role with Herrera and pogba on either side and in CL we can play with a midfield 3 of Herrera Pogba Perieira. If herrera gets injured then we have carrick to fill that role. Against big strong teams fellaini can fill that role & Jose really knows how to set up his team defensively so we can do this season without getting him. First we need to sort out our attack and then if the club still willing to invest then we can go for a DM. Its just my view, (Jose knows best)

Anyone claiming than 50m pounds for 29 year old Matic is anything other then a pathetic and a bad deal for us, needs their head checked. Whichever way you look at it, 50m is a pathetic transfer and seriously shakes my confidence in Jose and Ed. We better overpay 60m for a 6 years younger Dier than this. Pathetic is the only word i can say to this.
Christ. Chelsea payed £50m £34m for a 29 year-old David Luiz last year. £50m was a lot more for a player last year than it is this year. You really need to stop overreacting.

I care. Any Manchester United fan should care. Any company who spends its money irrational is going only one way. And i don't want Manchester United going that way.

We have been spending our money in an 'irrational' way for the last 12 years, & only recently have we been spending it properly on what we should have, which is if we did spend £50 m for Matic, & £55 m for Perisic, then it would still be money better spent.

Yet you still want us to spunk £60 odd million on Dier. The fact of the matter is that in this age of football, in order to succeed (winning titles) you are going to have to spend
and for a club like ours with sponsorship money coming from every direction, record revenue, massive fanbase, ridiculous tv money, what is wrong with paying (admittedly over the odds) on a premier league winning defensive midfielder who is only just turning 29 which gives us at least 4 years good service out of him?

Chelsea paid £34m for Luiz. They sold him for £50m.
Yeah, sorry, that was my bad. Just woke up.

Still, £34m of last years money seems to get you about as much as £50m of this years. Point still stands, though. Aside from a couple of laughs, no one will care. Except for him, he's having a meltdown.

Chelsea won't sell us Matic so this is case closed I guess.

Pogba, Herrera, Fellaini, Carrick, Pereira...we need another body in there.

I've stopped worrying about fees now.

£50m is the new £20m...

You know what? I think I'll trust the club, ran by some very shrewd businessmen, not to spend money irrationally. Whatever we pay for Matic, we can afford it. Getting hung up on transfer fees and worrying about the clubs sustainability is a complete waste of time and energy.
Shrewd businessmen? Are you serious? We've overpaid vertually for every player we've signed since SAF left.

It's perfectly logical to worry about Clubs sustainability.

Not many options up front, or on the wings. Been a poor window so far
yeah a poor window so far no doubt.

we were expecting a CF(signed lukaku), griezmann, a CM and a CB (signed lindelof) at the very least.

we are a bit halfway there but griezmann's decision to stay at atletico means we lost a potential 20 goal a season player. by the look of it we are not going to get anyone capable of getting near griezmann's numbers so thats a big lost. unless martial or rashford or mkhi steps up then we are going to have a very low scoring number in the league again this season.

matic would add quality to our midfield but one or two of our guys need to step up and increase their goal tally.

We have spent irrational money in the last couple of years mostly. Di Maria comes to mind, i'm not sure how did you come to mind with the 12 years period?

Spending 60m on Dier is a much better investment than 50 on Matic, if you can't do the math i can help you.... And yes clearly we need to spend money to succeed but we must do it wisely. Get in your heads that nothing is sustainable and that is my point. Look at Juve or Bayern they spend money but they do it wisely, so should we if we want to keep on top.
I do rate Matic and he's a proven player but we must put some limits and not go over the top. Lukaku in my mind is overpaying but it was needed, or Pogba last year but if we don't have to like in this case with Matic, we shouldn't.

Remember when Fergie said 'there is no value in the market' in early 2010? I personally thought he was mad and he should spend that money from the Ronaldo sale on anyone half decent but he stuck to his guns. He went on to win the league title the next year, came runners up (to Man City) the year after, then won it again in his final year. When he left the squad was in desperate need of reinvestment because it had been neglected. It was Fergies genius that won the league (twice in 3 years) with a squad with some bang average players in it (as well as some top quality). I personally think that if Mourinho wants Matic, yeah he is overpriced, yeah to me he is average but if that's who Mourinho wants to help us to win the league then just pay it and stop debating it. Mourinho knows what he wants, to me he is also a genius (like Fergie) and has worked with Matic before. Chelsea are clearly pulling our pants down over the fee but come May when we lift the trophy, will we care?

Despite overpaying for all these players, the club keeps posting profits. Still, must be run by a gaggle of incompetent fools. Surely fans like you and @Macedonian_FAN know more about running a club worth billions of pounds, than the seasoned businessmen and -women who've been running this club since 2005.

Manchester United is the most valuable club in the world and we continue to post record profits. Financially we are healthiest club about. The club's organic revenues create our economic buoyancy, not some wealthy benefactor. Ed Woodward deserves a lot of credit for that.

I don't think we should delay getting a DM in, surely it's as simple as - Matic, do you want to play for United ? Yes please Ed, Chelsea, we'll give you £35m for Matic, No chance, OK - Dier, do you want to play for United ? Yes please Ed, Spuds, we'll give you £45m for Dier, no way jose, Fabinho, do you want to play for United ? Sim, por favour ed, Monaco we'll give you £55m for Fabinho, what times the next flight to The USA

I was clearly referring to our non footballing spending since the takeover, where season after season our transfer budget was limited so the Glazer's could service the debt, now that's 'irrational' spending, chucking a few million more at a player than some fans deem value for money is not, if we don't spend it on players then it's not like anyone of us will see the benefit, unless you're a shareholder of course.

Do you actually worry about United's sustainability?
Why not? You have to keep on being successful inorder to keep growing financially. Right now, we're reaping the benefits of our sustained success and popularity under SAF. If we don't get our act togather there will come a time when we can't compete with other clubs for the best players, simple as.

You know we don't have a rich sugar daddy and therefore have to live within our (significant) means, right? The more we spend on one player, the less we have to spend elsewhere. I love how some people don't get this simple concept.

This is a concept you've invented in your head that has no basis in actual reality. If you really think overspending £15m on Matic means there's no longer £15m in the piggy bank to add to the Perisic bid then you are incredibly naive. Ed isn't spending from his Visa debit card.

It seems a lot of money, but we need a holding midfielder to replace the failed morgan schneiderlin.

It's 2017, all transfer fees are gone crazy to due the new TV deal and overseas ownership.

If Jose wants him, it's good enough for me. Let's just get it done and move on.

Ultimately it must. Money is a finite resource. We have a lot, but there are limits.

Would be great to see keyboard warriors Admiring an extra 5 million in the bank if we miss out on the top 4 by not signing what jose needs. I am sure it will be soothing enough for them to not get top4/win the league but have an extra 5 million in the bank.

At the fees we're talking we're far below anything which might be considered a limit

But even if there was, I'll leave that up to the men in fine suits with their calculators and spreadsheets to figure out. The fans sitting about crying over how much United spend seriously need to get a good hobby. Do you think Madrid fans sit about worrying they overpaid on Bale or any other player, or are they enjoying their dozens of trophies?

Carpe diem

Seriously they can get stuffed. If we pay anything over 35m for him we are absolute idiots.

Sorry but our scouting system must be able to find players equally to Matic or Dier?

In a way, everything that happens to the club going forward can be traced back to SAF.

That being said, the club has continued to grow, at a faster rate than our competition, despite 4 relatively bad seasons. That's not the legacy of Ferguson, that's the work of the people running the club. There's nothing to suggest the club hasn't got its act together, quite the opposite in fact.

Guess they're really, really bitter over the Lukaku deal. We won't be signing him at that price.

We have to walk away from both Matic and Perisic if they really want £50m for each players.

Both players are 28/29 years
old and personally I think they are both 6 to 7/10 players at best. Paying this sort of money sets a presidence for players in the future.

Some will argue the purchase of Pogba has already done this but the difference with him was he's way younger, was wanted by many of the top clubs and his marketability is massive. That isn't the case with Matic.

I don't want the club wasting money. This is why tickets prices go up, your half time pie cost £5, replica shirts cost £70 even with no name on the back. We the fans are paying towards this lunacy as well as the TV money.

£100m, imagine what that could achieve if pumped straight into the youth system. But then clubs are not allowed to think long term anymore.

Lukaku Tax?

I hope Jose doesn't put pressure on Ed to meet their idiotic demand. Much as we need a DM badly, we cannot bend over for Chelsea. Tell them to do one.
