Great news! Not shocked to see the majority of the Caf complaining about it.

Sounds like a model professional. Playing for United is not about talent but personality and mentality. I think Ole would know exactly the type of person that the team and dressing room needs. Great news.

3 years seems a bit excessive but I suppose it depends how much we're paying him (how easy he'd be to move on).

If we get a year at his level current it will be worth it.

Very obvious he is going into a mentor/backup role the last year or two.

tbh a good move from the club as he is very intelligent on the DM part of the game

I agree and this is why it is good news. Currently he is in good form and we need his experience for sure in a rather young team

Best news! Matic is more than enough against the bottom teams. We also have Fred who is more than enough against the top 6. We have great options for DM. We can comeback in two or 3 seasons when Matic is worn out. Till then I trust Fred to get better. The only problem with Fred as DM is he can’t buy time/hold unto the ball as well as Matic. Still we have pogba who can do that if needed.

Look he is a very good player and seems to be the model pro. Whats the problem?
If he stays and does his bit as well as mentoring the next generation whats bad about that.
He knows now what Ole needs him to do.

I think 3 years could be too long but he has turned his career back around and definitely deserves the extension. If we manage him properly he should be good for another 2 or 3 years, if we rely on him to play every game we will be back here calling for somebody's head in 12 months.

I'm fine with 3 years if it means 2 years of it will be a rotation/bench role.

You can see that some of the posters here waited a long time to file a complaint. Matic had a superb streak of consistency at a world class level. Last match wasnt one of his best performances but to blame him for a penalty for what should have been a stupid corner in the first place, is just beyond ridiculous. In my opinion Matic still had a good game going forward despite that one terrible pass.

3 years is too long for me but He is playing well at the moment
Hope his form continues for at least a year

I wonder if the club sees him in a year or two slotting in as an emergency CB and allowing Fred to play ahead of him, in addition to sharing the normal CDM role he currently runs.

United only have 3 available CBs right now who have first team experience. Tuanzebe has been injured far too much the past couple of seasons, including this current one. Jones is Jonesing it still. Smalling will be sold to Roma or whoever. The young CBs from the academy need more time, at least a couple of years.

His new contract could buy the club time in finding his replacement, grooming him alongside Matic and Carrick as coach, and fill an emergency role as CB, similar to what Carrick did and what Fernandinho does now for City.

I think he's an alternative to Pogba as deep lying playmaker. He's obviously not as good, but his playmaking is considered top notch.

Matic has creativity that is important to the build up or penultimate chance creation ball (i.e. direct ball for an assist like Greenwood's ball before Greenwood's pass for Bruno's goal) and can break lines from his position, but Pogba is a direct playmaking central midfielder from anywhere on the pitch and it only takes one raking pass as we've all seen countlessly over his career.

Matic is much more controlled and retention-based than Pogba, but I do agree that he can make influential passes as part of a lower central midfield pairing. Matic played well and with cohesion with Fred before lockdown, and then now with Pogba similar to his first season with Matic under Mourinho. But what is making them tick together even more is obviously Bruno, but the development and understanding of Martial and Rashford which was not present under Mourinho because they had to go through development in general and then develop and understand their respective positions of LF (Rashford) and CF (Martial). It takes a lot of time on the pitch against opposition and just general repetition. There were glimpses of it in the first half of the season, obviously seen first match against Chelsea, but they went through their growing pains and it looks to be worth it as the persistence and patience by Ole, staff, players, etc seem to have began to blossom and may have another level or two to reach with the emergence of Greenwood and continued play and improvement/consistency of Rashford and Martial.

What a lot of people are missing about the Matic extension is that he’s probably taken a pay cut in exchange for the contract length.

He’s a player who doesn’t pick up many injuries and can be a major stabilising influence if used in the right way and not run into the ground.

I’m happy with the news.

Aston Villa 0:3 Man Utd
He was really, really poor unfortunately in the first half no excuses, but he improved as the game went on.

Should rest him the next game imo.

didn't get going today. Southampton are a very good pressing side. I'd rest him and play Fred Monday.

He and Bruno had a crap first half hour, I still can't get my head around Bruno being crap yet wins a pen, scores, and 2 assits

That's actually what I like most about Bruno as an attacking player. He can play crap and still finish the game with a goal and assist at the best, just like any super star player.

He's fine when he has the ball with space in front of him. But take that away and the cumbersome, static, immobile player stands out, especially without the ball.

He's fortunate Pogba and Bruno are playing in this team.

Too many touches today, but overall solid performance. We were better as the game progressed, but Im just worried our B-team hasnt scored a single goal since coming on for several games now. They are fresh and the game is in the bag, basicaly the opponents are just waiting for the final whistle so it shouldnt be that hard.

Wow, tough crowd. Didn’t think he was that bad.

First 10 minutes were tough as Villa pressed us like mad men in midfield. He wasn’t the only one to fall victim.

He had committed 3 fouls in the first 12 mins . He does a job alright but we’re lucky we don’t have Lingard , Periera , In front of him.

Can’t get my head around the 3 year contract. 2 would have been plenty.

Should've waited until we secured top 4, guy was playing for a contract till now

Slow start but he did well.

That's the thing with Matic, very classy player but easy to burn out and under Jose got really overplayed.

Nobody in the Man Utd midfield understands the defensive midfield position better than Matic. You saw it when he came off for McTominay. Whereas Matic was dropping into the back line to make the third centre back as we build up, or on defensive transitions, McTominay came on and tried to press the ball. Both McTominay and Fred showed that neither really understand where they need to be, and when they need to be there, when anchoring midfield. That's why, despite his sloppiness at times today, I continue to see Matic as a vital cog in our team. Without him the defence and midfield shape just gets ragged.

Awful first half from Matic. Surprised he came out for the 2nd half given he'd already been booked.

Sluggish today, got better as the half went on. When he's even a bit off the pace he gets caught on the ball trying to dribble out so much. Glad he went off early for a rest.

He was fine and was the only one who was telling everyone in the first half to slow down and get on the ball and play with a slower, more methodical tempo. Villa couldn't keep their concentration or shape for long periods of phases and all it took were some well placed and thought out passes such as the play between Martial, Shaw, and Bruno's missed header.

After that, United slowed the tempo and dictated it. Jon Moss was dogshit again in the first half hour and didn't call fouls on United's behalf, including a foul on Matic when he was dribbling into midfield. Pogba was slow and sloppy on the ball, including Bruno, more so than Matic was in the earlier periods of the first half.

Yeah this is his number one flaw when he’s out of form. Holding onto the ball and losing possession as a result.

Needed a bit of a rest.
