Busquets was never the most mobile midfielder in the world yet he's done that at the best team in the world whose pressing was 100 times better than anybody else's. Jorginho is no sprinter either, did fine under Sarri for Napoli, seems to be doing fine for Chelsea too. So no, if Herrera was in and Fred was still leaving massive gaps like he was yesterday, he would struggle too, unless he can duplicate that is.
He's miles more mobile than Matic and was just all round a much better player. Jorginho moves the ball with pace and has the capacity to dictate games, that's why Sarri puts Kante in next to him. If Matic was capable of doing what Jorginho does, then adding on additional support makes sense. But he isn't. He does dictate play, win the ball back, create from deep, cover large distances, nothing. It seems because he's getting exposed less often than usual he is doing a good job. He isn't.

He's been good in the first half against both Cardiff (in which he was our best player in the first half) and Huddersfield, but both games I've felt he's gone off the boil and struggled a bit in the second half. Even though he's playing better I think he stills needs a rest for a game or two.

@GifLord Any chance we could get a gif of Matic's skill leaving two players to dust while receiving the ball from DDG?

Matic was dreadful in Mourinho's last season at Chelsea too before having a pretty good season the next one under Conte. Hopefully the same here.

He's been very good. Just hope he gets a bit more support from OGS/other midfielders.

I like he is isolated and in front of the back four, as that means the others are higher up the pitch but that transition from when he has the ball to going up the pitch can improve/be more sturdier/faster.

The players need to drop with more intensity to give him those short passes between the lines. Everyone's still finding their feet in these tactics but I fear we may get overrun if we have too many players high up.

These two games under Ole, he looks more relaxed and freer to cover the ground and it shows in his work rate. A Great player but stutters covering the defenders. He needs a defender he can depend on, someone like Rio.

His criticism was always over the top here but it's not overly surprising as some idiots here have this need to criticise other players to big up their love objects.
Such a weird phenomenon. In periods I'm sure 60% of the posts in the football forum are due to different feuds like that running in certain threads.

Think Matic has stepped it up a level again and that is good, because if we are to do something this season he has to play an important role in that. Only good DM we've got.

Over the top criticism for period of last months? Not at all, now he is looking better for sure but under JM, it was next level shit, he couldnt track runners, people passing him like he doesnt exist etc.

I think the criticism was generally warranted (if you exclude the completely irrational posters - the ones who claim a player is the worst in the PL, or the ones who say such and such player is the best in the world after a couple of games). He's been poor. I think most people are surprised as he was a Jose old boy, but he's been just as affected as everyone else. Let's hope he keeps up the form.

Where has his player come from? Last week I was begging us to sell.

Fair play, ive been massively critical of Matic this season but the last 2 games have been much better.

His transformation is even bigger than Pogba, which shows me that I guess he didn’t actually want Mourinho here after all?. Maybe he knew he was first choice every game so felt he didn’t have to try.

Whatever it is, he’s doing his job properly now and we look much better for it. With him doing more water carrying it allows Pogba to concentrate on what he does best.

let’s hope he keeps this up longer than a few matches.

Another thing is how much he has played since he came here, he is a beast. No wonder his performance dipped, basically having no time to rest. He is very valuable to us if we take care of him. He obviously needs competition but if we manage his game time then we could use him for at least 3-4 years after this season, like we did with Carrick. If we sell him we only have kids left to play.

As far as I remember Matic plays well when he has a defensive midfielder behind him.

Is it now fair to say he's downed tools at both Chelsea and Utd playing for Mourinho? Must be a record.

It's not even that. Go through threads, the same people who overpraise him now and play the 'so did he down the tools for Mourinho too?' card are the same people who were berating him last couple of months wanting him sold, saying how shit he is so now they can laugh off the notion that Pogba downed his tools for Mourinho. I click the 'Show ignored content' button and I know who will have posted here and what the posts will be. It's hilariously bad.

Don't worry about it then, a bit of Solskjaer is all you need my friend.

Absolutely, chuffed for him and I'd be delighted if he could sort of make it here, given that he already seems to have all the players on his side (some of them he worked with in the academy) and the matchgoing fans are behind him. Everybody's benefitting from him being here at the moment.

That turned he did in the 2nd half was ridiculous
Was it the little sort of drag back on what seemed the outside of his boot. If we are thinking of the same one then yeah that was sexy. Was fully expecting him to do a Matic and play it back to the keeper but the Ole effect had him trying some Pogba like moves.

He’s really not sucked the life out of me the last few games, I’d even go as far as to say I’ve been pretty impressed. @ash_86 must be around 60-70. The game is on UK tv soon so going to watch it again.

I haven't been this happy thinking about United-stuff in years. Makes me want to play Fifa again, fire up that Solskjær manager career mode and get lost in the dream:lol:

I'm glad and acknowledge that Matic has been doing in my opinion better than he even did in his first season with things like his forward passing.

Saying that it's funny when some people complain about bias against our own players when some of the ones complaining about it now were against our players like martial.

Not as shit as people think he is. A cohesive and motivated team is a huge thing at this point. Still probably worth moving him on in the next two seasons though.

I don’t mind him not necessarily doing that ball winning to be honest. If the two either side of him are doing it, as long as he’s positioning himself well enough I’m ok with that.

I thought he was a lot better again today. I’ve given the bloke some stick recently but fair play to him he’s starting to show his quality now and it’s good to see.
He is a defensive midfielder ffs, it is him who should do the defensive work.

Stands to reason that other midfielders are winning more interceptions and tackles that him if we take into consideration that our other two CM's are pressing higher and more intensely than him for 90 minutes in a system that places everyone further up the field.

Was never actually that bad. Most of the abuse he was getting was because he is liked by Mourinho.

Not really, he was getting abuse because he was playing shite and like Lukaku, was never dropped. All managers have their favorites, but if a player is performing badly AND get favorable treatment from the manager fans tend to turn on them pretty quickly.

Since everyone has stepped up their performance several levels after we got rid of Jose, its hard to say what is down to individual performances and what is down to new tactics, but under Jose we conceded both an alarming rate of chances and goals, so it is safe to say that our dedicated DM could have done a lot better

He has been outstanding. Experienced leader and provides stability. Herrera is far too erratic to play as a sole CDM. Hope Matic gets subbed against Bournemouth to be ready for Newcastle. And we need him for Spurs so dont want to see him against Reading. Jose ran him to the ground. We should definitely be looking at a long term option, ideally Rodri from Atletico.

Played really well the last two games, we should definitely sign a younger player to eventually take over but if he keeps playing like this there's no reason he should be dropped in my opinion, its incredible the change he has made pre and post Mourinho.
