reelworld has recalled my bad-name memory.. you were asking who was another box-to-box player that you did not recall..

it's Van Bommel of PSV that i think could be our long term replacement.. he's also a box to box player if i'm not wrong.. and wasn't he the one who scored a stunner in the game between Holland and England?

He could be BIG.

someone should confirm his ability as i have no access to watch the dutch league here in Bangkok.

We have got box to box players who will be fighting fit come January 2003.
Striker and wide cover is required

i'm talkin about 2-3 years down the line.. butt will be too old to take up first team opportunities by the time Keane quits the game.. wouldn't you agree?

Possibly although I haven't really seen enough of him to comment.Mind what I have seen is very promising

someone should confirm his age, reelworld just said he's about 28.. that's not goin to do much good now is it?

RUnited, sorry for my mistake, apparently he's only 25 years old (born on Feb 1977) :) .
I only saw him once during England - Holland friendly game though, and he was fantastic in that game.

Butt will be too old in 2 or 3 years time? What are you on today?

He must be our age, so he'll be 30 or so when Keane moves on - I wouldn't want to build our midfield around a 30 year old Nicky Butt.

Your age perhaps. Still, over the hill at 30 eh? Kinell.

Ryan's 29 and looking over the hill already - maybe cos our players have been playing twice a week for about 10 years. You're 26 aren't you?

Van Bommel could def be very BIG in england, I would like to see him at United but.....

Keano might be around for another couple of years leaving Butty at about 30 when he goes but thats in a couple of years time. Van Bommel wouldnt get a game for us with both fit and he isnt still going to be at PSV for that time, someone (the Arse) wil have swooped for him!

Its about rotation and cover, we play 2 games a week so I don't see why he wouldn't get the same number of games that Butt used to get, about 30-35.

Giggs has lost it. He's not over the hill. I think he's afraid of doing his hamstring everytime he gets on the pitch. I also think our system doesn't suit wing play as there's no one really to cross to. Butt will certainly not be over the hill in 2 or 3 years.

Speculation as to whether he's holding back from running full tilt, or just not as fast - but at the end of the day, they're the same thing if he can't skin a full back. Butt may not be past it at 30, but at the same time he won't be as authoratitive as Keane, and I don't think we can build our midfield around him and Scholes long term - maybe in rotation but I'm not so sure about first choice for big matches.

If the life of a football team is 5 years as Mr Wenger says, and I tend to agree with that, then what does long term mean? Long term cannot be longer than five years and you will find precious few players who will stay at a club much longer than that nowadays.

i agree with Neil.. it won't be a sound long term plan thinking that we will build our midfield around a 30 year old guy.. we all know butt will have to play second string to keane until keane retires.. by the time this happens butt will have to continue playing second string to our new box-to-box star player.. which could Van Bommel IMO.

u see what i mean now?

fecks sake you're annoying. Why are you on this futile mission to convert everyone to your way of thinking? Ever occurred to you that you might not be right? You're a bit like a Jehovah's Witness or something. Read my post above yours.

butt is a great great player.. but because he has had to be on the bench for so long i'm afraid he won't be very effective in terms of authorizing a midfield 60 games a year.. he will definitely keep getting his share of 30-35 games a year like OGS.. which is him and OGS are among our best rotation players.. and will continue to be like this IMO.

i'm not asking for you to convert your thinking at all.. i do agree that Butt is a great player.. but at 30 how far are we lookin down the road with butt? maybe we'll have to find a cover for him too.. but that cover has to be atleast as good as butt.. and must be young enough for us to have a great future..

look at our striker.. we didn't have anyone coming through after cole, yorke and sheringham.. look where we are now? i'd hate to see us end up like that in 2 years time with our midfield.. where giggs is also looking very tired.

how solid will it be when we will have butt and his cover rotating 30-35 times a year..? we will need a star midfielder who's as good as keane in 2 years time.. not just as good as butt.

and u think van bommel will be as good as keane?

he's a good player...but no keane.

Who will be? At what age did it become clear that Keane, or Vieira would become the players they are today?

i really don't know.. i was wondering that also.. that's why i started the thread.. to ask if anyone's seen him.. but surely we will need someone other than Butt in my opinion.. Butt could maybe continue keane's job decently for about 2 more years after.. but will we be winning things on a regular basis with him is surely one of my concerns..

any other suggestions then?

keane showed it right away when he joined us i think.. and he was already very good working with nigel clough at Nott Forest.. i always thought Clough would have followed keane to be with us.. donno what happened with him..

Viera was very young when he joined arsenal, and looked strong already at that time.. he took only few months to adapt and was already on a mission to destroy us.

i think a good scout should be able to spot these type of players at about 23-24.. their peak will be when they're about 28-29 (keane's example).. which means the best of Viera is yet to come!

RVDV...

i'd like us to buy very young raw talent.. like, Joaquin, vicente, D'allesandro, cisse, aimar(altho he's not as raw), duff etc etc...

best to build from the foundations again.

agree totally.. but how do you spot a great box to box player at that raw age? it could be a waste if you bring them in too early.. unless you groom them from 16-17.. like Michael Stewart.. will he be good?

Is there anyone in the world other than RVDV though? I think Dunn's going to be a great player, well, he already is a very good player - but not sure how good he'll be, particularly as a leader. Ballack I would have thought of as being a good buy, but hasn't done Bayern much good so far! Any other Germans, other than Hamann, coming through of that type? Who plays that role in the French U21's? Or for Senegal?

You two have turned into a right couple of ugly sisters haven't you?

I'm not talking about arguing but many threads where he posts every two or three posts he is telling people to open their eyes and see it - it's all so obvious according to him - are we all blind etc etc. The only people he debates with are people that see it his way, and so he ends up discussing most things with you.

As for being abusive, welcome to the board RUaladyboy.

You might be right, but thats the norm on this board... and I wouldn't exclude you from that.

i don't only argue with people who see it my way.. but one thing for sure i do not argue with an abusive less-educated person such as yourself. there's no point, because after every post i'll get an abuse like the one you just threw at me.. i think it's very uneducated and so there's no need to sink to that level.

i'm sorry i'm disappointing you with my posts.. but i cannot see myself wasting my precious time on people who see abusive remarks as the only way to win an argument..

i never complain when i lose an argument.. never call anyone for what they're not.. i respect their every opinions the way they should be. and i have agreed with a lot of people.

Not being insulting Dan, its just that you like to convince others of your opinion as much as the next man, and sometimes use abuse or ridicule when they disagree with you. Its the character of this board, call it brawling if you will, though sometimes when you do it its at least a bit more tongue in cheek. In a miserable German kind of way. ;)

less educated??! You make me laugh. What do you know anyway?

You've sunk to "the level" yourself mate so don't be getting all righteous on me.

not getting righteous mate.. just the way things should be.. i don't abuse people.. you do.. that's the difference..

educated people don't abuse people because they will know that it's wrong. i can keep debating with you all day without using one bad word, but you can't.. you have less patience.. you may be right, but you're clearly not grown up enough to discuss it like adults.. therefore, your education is limited to books - and not all around.. you have no manners mate.. you would just ditch anybody's comment who doesn't go along with yours..

try debating with them a bit.. they might agree with you.. if you shut them out with "you're an ABU" i doubt you'll get anywhere with them.. not only won't you change their minds, you make them think you're a prick too. what's the point? what do you get from it?
