In a land far far away....playing Fifa
Despite the result, I wanted to mention that Nani's movement was exceptional today. Getting into open spaces and helping to create passing triangles wherever he moved.

It's such a shame our backline decided to have such a mare.

Very good to have him back, great player.

He was brilliant today. Showed glimpses of some of his best stuff.

Yeah he played really well, as I've said before, for me he's close to getting on to Rooney's level in terms of how much he can bring to our attack.

Earlier on in this thread Bilbo (I think?) was laughed at for suggesting that Valencia might be our best winger. I wonder how laughable that suggestion is now?

I recall this being posted by Pogue a few weeks ago when Valencia was on top form and Nani was still injured, I said at the time that it was unfair.

He's brilliant, have maintained all along that he along with rooney are our 2 best attacking players.

Best player on the pitch today. Great game, especially consdiering this is his first start since mid-january.

Having just come back from injury and looked ever so sharp... Well done Nani. Our defence should feel ashamed of themselves.

What a game from him. As I've said in the Rooney thread. His, Welbeck's and Rooney's performances would have deserved a win today. Brilliant from all 3 of them.

His combination with Welbeck was a joy to watch, and quite exciting for the future.

Best player on the pitch ? He did NOTHING defensively...he left Evra exposed time and time again. He was excellent going forward but defensively - he was awful

That is Nani's style though. Like Ronaldo for us, just doesnt get involved defensively to the extent say Park does, but he does us fine. He looked sharpe today. Could be key against cracking city next week like Charity Shield.

Evra left himself exposed defensively, nothing to do with Nani

Nani was great defensively today. He should have been right back instead of Rafael.

He did nothing defensively? What match did you watch.

He tracked his man which is what he should do. Evra caused his own problems by constantly getting sucked inside as he usually does.

He worked very hard getting back. There was a few times when Evra going walkabout left him exposed. Evra was dire. Nani was brilliant.

I really don't know how much longer can Fergie tolerate Evra. I love Paddy but he's become a total liability.

You'd think he was sauntering around in the Everton half Ronnie style from that description.

His work rate going back the way can't be faulted.

He was outstanding in his overall performance today. He's not content just to wait on the other wing, he likes to come across to support Valencia and provide more options. With that movement he will be a threat anywhere near the goal.

Watch the game again and you'll be surprised.

Love it when he moves inside almost playing next to Valencia, gives us so much attacking threat down that side

Yep, I like Evra's personality but his game defensively has gotten so poor in recent seasons and it's not even like he's a great attacking outlet to compensate for it. He gets forward but his actual crosses/finishing isn't the best compared to other attacking fallbacks.

He was very good today and the goal was very well taken, first I thought he would be too close to the keeper.

If the rest of the team would do their job as well as Nani, we would have easily won today

Seems like we'll have to live with him for another season at least after what Sir Alex said about Fabio going out on loan. Does he just not see it, or is he just confident enough that it won't hurt us? It's strange that a player under any manager, let alone Sir Alex can play so poorly for so long and yet be in the starting lineup week in week out. He's been better this season then the last 2 but its still been poor.

Tbf whilst I've slated evra I do think there are other factors too, one of them being without fletcher we only have carrick who can provide good defencive cover in the middle. Scholes will try but he's not the best and can be a bit found out if there are lots if runners. If you look at some one like clichy who's hardly sound defensively hes been getting much less exposed at city becausehe has two midfielders who know where to drop off, they can help plug defensively holes. I think if we sign another defensively spun midfielder in the summer we'll see a much much improve defensive display all round.

Javi Martinez

But yes I agree, we all know if the opposition hustles Carrick, that more often then not he will give the ball away, he's not very good under a lot of pressure. He's also not much of a runner, so he won't be helping out in positions like evra's when he gets caught out (nothing against Carrick, he's a good player). Scholes can't run much either these days, so it does leave us a little open at the back. We need more youth in the middle, something we had with Cleverley and Anderson but they were too attacking. I think putting Carrick behind them two would make us a lot more defensively sound, but would make us go to a 4-3-3.

Evra really does need replacing though, he's turning 31 in a month, and while he is still a good influence on the youngsters (probably) he is a liability in defence. Nani did better defensively then he did, he was coming back to lb while Evra was just jogging around in the middle, it amazes me how he starts every game for us. I love him but he's past his best now.

I think getting another mobile, defensively good player with good passing, like a more aggressive carrick would be ideal. I don't want to go 433 given the potential the Rooney welbeck combo has. Getting carrick with another sound midfielder would give us a very solid base and then we have the likes of Rooney, nani, Valencia etc who are more than capable of creating enough between them.

I'm not sure if it's a tactical decision pro actively taken by us but evra tucks in far too much. He's constantly leaving others to handle wide players. It almost cost us in the first 5 minutes as well. Surely a player can't be making such routine errors so frequently? It has to part of the system. Somehow.

Yeah I think it might be that. Tbh there are a few things that our players do that I can't help think is tactical. Biggest example is jones in midfield. Hes partnered giggs and bombed on, and he's been in a midfield 3 and been the most attacking player, you'd think he's there to either hold or buzz around ala fletcher yet he never does that and I just think either no ones telling him not to do it which is odd or it's what they want him to do. Similarly as you said some of the decisions evra makes on a frequent basis are odd, so I can see why some people might think its tactical.
