Nani

It seems he has got better with people’s fading memories.

“Insanely good”? “world class”?

In brief moments he could be, but he was very frustrating and incredibly inconsistent over his career at United. I remember a lot of people looking to him to step up and be the star man after Ronaldo left but he left them disappointed.

He scored some great goals and I imagine his highlights reel will be great viewing but he had the talent to be so much more.

I mean he was world class in 10/11

Or would you say 10 goals and 20 assists is still inconsistent?

He scored 41 goals and added 71 assists in 210 games, goal and assist around every 140 minutes. Ronaldo's record for us was goal or assist every 127 games, including penalties and he was basically a striker for half of his time here.

I think Nani was definitely our player with biggest expectations from our fans for some reason, everything he did was regarded as something he should do, and that he should do much better than that for some reason.
He was a high risk/high reward flair player at a time (the peak Fergie era) when moderation and consistency were the expected norm, hence the frustration of some fans at the time. And yet it was that flair that often ignited a new creative dimension to our late 2000s early 2010s success and was a crucial cog of creative continuity after CR7 fled for Spain.

Agree. The truth is, in that period under Fergie, whilst we were incredibly well managed and were successful, it was still a team largely made of monster mentalities and brilliant man managing. We were free flowing but not exactly precision football with established patterns of play. I'm not criticising Fergie per se but more to highlight that Nani was being a creative force (with freedom I will agree) in not exactly the best conditions. It's why some of us fans acknowledge how brilliant he was. It's was mercurial stuff imo. He wasn't a one man team but at times it was very close creatively/attacking wise.

I always loved Nani. He was one of my favourite players.

Some of the abuse he used to get from our fans was insane.

Back to his hometown club. Love that shirt btw.

Good to see he's still playing.

He scored some lovely goals for us. I always remember his flipping celebration. I'm pretty sure he said SAF got mad at him and told him to stop doing it out of fear he'd injure himself.

Good memories.

One of my favourite ever United players. I used to have arguments with my mates who said he was rubbish. I will always love him. Stupid Moyes shipped him out of the club.

He is in the same bracket as Forlan and Veron who I also loved but others hated. All these players should have been at United longer.

Tale as old as time, as time passes people rewrite history. Nani was about 21 and still developing when he came but was straight into the first team. Was inconsistent and frustrating, and then became a world class winger, albeit short but sweet.

Head and shoulders above most of the wingers today, imo.

Sold too early another victim of Van Gaal depresso ball.

Nani was excellent. This is far from a case of rewriting history. That is if you judge him the way a winger should be judged and not by red cafe's ridiculous unrealistic standards where a winger is meant to have 30 goals and 15 assists while having 100% passing accuracy and being excellent defender. He was excellent most of his time with the club and he was a mainstay in multiple title winning teams. In his prime, he would be the best winger in today's premier league.

Yeah, he's not Mo Salah but he was a cracking player duriong his peak, around 09/10/11. I was in a pub in Newquay when he scored on his debut against Spurs. Remember the celebration and Scholes pushing him I think

The biggest thing that hindered Nani's reputation was that Ronaldo left having scored 40-odd goals and that was the yardstick he was measured against at the time.
The weight of that expecation was totally unfair on Nani and I think he'd have been even better without that pressure. At the time people almost perceived him they way they look at Antony nowadays. Nani was 10x the player Antony is.

It was harsh on his reputation but I actually think it might have helped him develop into the player he turned into. I think pressure like that can actually be a good thing. Keeps you on your toes. Better than the treatment of our players in the last years that got contracts throw at them for doing the bare minimum.

He was light years beyond anything we have at the moment. Criminally underrated imo.

Agree, he had the magic to excite, could cross well and score absolute worldies. He always bagged double digit assists every season too.

Loved Nani, class player on his day but worth also mentioning how infuriating he was. Rooney always looked like he wanted to kill him for some of his decision making and sloppy passing. Valencia was the more consistent player who you knew exactly what you'd get from but lacking the flair Nani had. They were 2 very good options though

Yup, smashing the ball into the opposition player's shins. There was even a special thread about it.

Valencia was great for a long time, but his leg (?) break changed his game, unfortunately.

Nani should have been booked, not sent off. Criminal refereeing by the Cuneyt.

How ironic.

Didn't the leg break happen relatively early in his career with us?

I'd take prime Valencia currently. Absolutely adore pace in my teams.

Nani amd Valencia would tear the current PL apart tbf.

Well in fairness they basically did at the time, we just took it for granted so much that instead of appreciating that, it felt more like a downgrade on Ronaldo.

Nani was definitely a frustrating player though. Half the caf would almost certainly hate him.

My main memory of this game was that Sir Alex refused to do the post match interview because he was too distraught.

Of course we learned later on that he already knew he was retiring at the end of the season by this point, and he was so distraught because he knew that was his last ever shot at the Champions League. Ruined by that disgraceful decision.

Jose even said that the better team lost in his post match interview.

Feck Cuneyt Cakir. Prick.
