Nani | announces his retirement

The only thing more infuriating than the majority of Nani's performances are the people that think stats alone can be used to judge whether someone did or did not have a good season.

What use is notching up an assist and a goal if your performance for the 90 minutes is actually detrimental to the team?

There is a reason that he wasn't played consistently, though. It's because he wasn't playing well consistently. Therefore he was dropped. As a manager of Man Utd, you can't afford to keep playing someone in the hope that they will eventually turn it on. Nothing Nani has done since he left us suggests we made a mistake in letting him go. The mistake was not letting him leave sooner.

Towards the end of the 11/12 season, certainly after the 1-0 loss to City at the Etihad, he was dropped for Valencia/Young, for the rest of his United career pretty much. And they were absolutely abysmal in an attacking sense.

For the calender year of 2010 he was world class - A one man highlight reel and one of the most productive players in Europe. I was sure he was going to go on to be a superstar for us.

Never maintained it - I just don't think he had the personality for it. Strange because guy could do anything with a ball.

He was on fire in 2010 but got injured and ended up missing the World Cup in 2010 which was terrible. We ended up playing with Danny and Simão instead

Nani will probably go as a false striker I reckon with Andre Silva flopping at Meelan. Will Eder get a sentimental call or has he been successfully retired after his goal?

You surprise me on Quaresma, genuinely thought he was one of those regardless of form who was always in the squad.

He came through at Sporting in 2002 so thought he might've made the world cup squad that year. Must've confused him with Simao.

Andre Silva will go even if ends the season with 0 Serie A goals so I think both Nani and Eder will stay at home, there are only 23 spots and we can't take too many offensive players.

I never seen danny playing at zenit but heard he was a star in russia but for me he was always crap for the NT. Simão, if i remember correctly was one of our the best players in that worldcup, but Nani would start if was not injured. Nani was always a frustrating player, as i hated his playing style that consists in receveing the ball in a counter and stop the game in front of the first opponent and waiting for him to try to take the ball.

Yeah Simão was one of the best in that WC but Nani had a way better NT career than him. Nani was also a superior player club wise. You may hate him but you can't argue with that. There was nothing frustrating about his Euro2016 performances.

He's our third most capped player ever and our 8th top goalscorer. Definitely a legend but yeah, he was pretty inconsistent and often frustrating.

He deserves a place at the next World Cup for all he's done but I don't think it will happen unless he gets fit and starts playing consistently for Lazio.

I don't think that will matter tbf. Bernardo Silva will go and i don't think he will play consistently at City. Fitness will definitely be an issue though.

Nani was never detrimental to the team Carl. People constantly compared him to Ronnie which was ridiculous at the time and even more ridiculous now.

Makes me laugh listening to people on here make him out to be a 3/10 player. Ridiculous.

Wasn't particularly talking about Nani there Pip, just an example of why you can't use stats alone to judge performance.

Agree.

He had the lot technically but could never find that level of consistency that the real greats have.
Hmmm...wonder why that was?
Left Side, left side, bench, bench, bench, bench, sub, left side, right side, bench, bench, bench....
Not to mention Rooney yelling 'cause he took a shot on goal.

He absolutely was in his last few seasons, continually gave the ball away, terrible decisions, selfish player.

Only Maribor but he leaves about 6 of them on their arse. Wish we had someone like Nani now.

Nani's back in Europe. 1+1 contract to Adana Demirspor in the Süper Lig.

He’s been all over the place, what a life experience he’s had. Lived in Portugal, England, Spain, Australia, USA, Italy, Turkey. Hard to believe he’s still only 36 cause it feels like a lifetime ago since he played for us.

He wasn't reliable enough for a SAF team but he would be the first name on the teamsheet now.

Criminally underrated player during his time at United. The stick he used to get but comparing him to our attackers now, there isn't one anywhere near his level.

Very talented winger.
I remember early on he frustrated a lot of fans because he was very inconsistent and a bit soft.

By far his best spell for us was calendar year 2010 and most of 2011
During this period I remember him being one of the main outlets in United's attack and put in some world class performances.

Legend, what an achievement inspiring my username

He was one of my favourite players from that double winning team. Loved his piss taking vs Arsenal. Also think it went under the radar how composed he was in front of goal, as he would often chip it over the keeper with ease when 1v1.

On his day he was unplayable and there was a 18 month / 2 year window where he was totally world class.

Happy retirement

Still one of my favorite United goals

It's all relative to the time and team he was in though, isn't it? Like we were considered top 3 team in Europe at the time and he was rightly or wrongly seen as an eventual Ronaldo replacement. If he was here today, he'd be our best player but we're currently 13th in the league, wouldn't be hard.

Great player, loved him at United. Gave us some fantastic memories. Would welcome a winger like him now!

Thank you Nani

One of my favourite United players of that generation.. Best moments for me where his goal against arsenal, the piss take dribble against arsenal, the goal against Liverpool and the back flip celebration, his wonder strike against Chelsea and of course that high high-pressure penalty kick against Chelsea in that final!

For a split second I thought Cech saved that and we had lost the final.

I don't know how cech managed to get a hand to it.. It was almost in the side netting.. Big pressure penalty.. My favourite was Anderson's, as I knew we won the game the way he celebrated it
