named good strikers(not cup tied)?

Gudjohnsen ? Duff ? Theyre both cuptied. Ronaldinho or Dicanio if they cant be cuptied, but I dont see the problem with getting a player who is, because at the moment I'm only thinking about the league.

webber
vassell
defoe
maccarone
ronaldinho
jansen
sheringham!!!

The last one is a bit of wishful thinking isn't it? Though it would be nice if Teddy's last minute goal gave us the European Cup. Deja vu...

Ronaldinho is cup tied as he played and scored for PSG in their 1st round match in the UEFA Cup.

After a little research, these are the clubs from the main footballing countries who are playing in Europe this season(not counting English teams) -

France - Lyon, Auxerre, Lens, Bordeaux, PSG
Germany - Bayern Munich, bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund, Hertha Berlin, Schalke, Werder bremen, Stuttgart
Holland - Ajax, PSV, Feyenoord, Vitesse Arnhem
Italy - Juventus, AC Milan, Inter, Roma, Chievo, Lazio, Parma
Portugal - Porto, Sporting Lisbon, Boavista
Spain - Valencia, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Deportivo, Real Betis, Celta Vigo, Alaves, Malaga

Feel free to add any I've missed, but I think it illustrates that finding a player *who is better than we've laready got* who is not cup tied, will be very difficult. Unless you go the South American route, which is risky.

Scholes and Giggs are not strikers they're attacking midfielders and dont really perform to there best upfront although Scholes has come back in superb form, but lookin at them names listed above a world class striker IS needed to make United strong contenders for the champs league and premier??

Scholes is definitely going to be used as a striker this season. Were ARE strong contenders for the CL & PL, with or without a world class striker.

Hang on hang on... if a player plays in the UEFA cup, he's cuptied for the champions league? That's a little strange. They are different competitions.

I was under the impression that you can't play in Europe for 2 different clubs in the same season, regardless of which competition you played in.

Please, somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

OK, I found the rules on the uefa site and it says this -

In the course of a season, a player is eligible to play only for one single club in the UEFA club competitions(excluding the first three rounds of the UEFA Intertoto Cup).

Hope that clears it up.

Judging from your statement, I pressume you are happy with the striker situation at OT?

Could be worse.
Weve two great strikers in Olle & Ruud, a younger striker called Diego and Scholes and Giggs as more than adequate back up.
If Scholes is mainly used as a forward from now on i would still expect us to bring in another striker, young and for the future like Forlan as Olle is getting on a bit. i wont loose any sleep
if it doesnt happen within 12 months.

I would presume then that your "unhappy" with it.
Seeing as your unhappy with the defence and the goalkeeping it leaves only the midfield. Are you 100% happy with our midfield?

Ronaldinhio would be fantastic imo.

------------------ Fab ----------------------

-- Gary ------ John ----- Rio ------ Silvestre

--Becks ---- Keano ------- Scholes/Seba --- Giggs

---------------Ronaldinhio -------------------

---------------------RVN ---------------------

Would be very hard to stop imo.

Yes I am disatisfied with the striker situation as I believe we need to buy at least one pacey striker

The defence is pretty stable now although a bit thin on the flanks so an escude-like signing or two would be very welcome.

Midfield's fine - no need to add to it.

We'll need to score more, especially if Rio is going to be out for a month.

So whats changed last seasons well thought out plan of a whole new defence?

anyway, if Fergie sticks to his word and uses Scholes as a striker then we have 4. This will also give us more chances to use Butt & Veron in midfield. If we dont use Scholes up front then we have 4 brilliant midfielders going for 2 places.
Long term ill agree we do need a new striker but i cant see it happening in a hurry and i think the above 4 + Giggs is adequate.

We can surely all agree that we need at least one more striker, and if Forlan doesn't come through, then possibly two in the next 12 months. Even with the likes of RVN and Ole, injuries, suspension, loss of form and other factors mandate that we have to have a deep bench.

So you think were stron contenders, god i love being right ;)

Just saw the Arsenile v Sunderland game and the Black cats striker Bellion looked skillful and fast. at one instance he outran the Arse defence. I think United needed this type of fast striker to run on to the thru balls put in by the mid-field. Ole and RVN do not have speed.

Totally agree, I don't think our European and domestic rivals will be shaking in their boots at the prospect of guys like Forlan and Webber

i wonder if our rivals where shaking in their boots the first time they heard OLE's name or Ruuds name ??? .... how do you think small names become big names i'm not saying forlan or webber definatly will be 'big' but give'em a chance FFS.

Ruud was hardly a 'small name'. He arrived for almost 20 million pounds having impressed people for a long time in Holland, I think they knew what to expect.

with a striker like ruud we need someone to run at defences and play creative through balls.
therefore my Onion Prize goes to the coloured lady with the wet look perm in the PSG shirt.

We do need another striker but being cup tied isn't necassarily a problem. The way we play in Europe 4 strikers isn't essential. We've not had trouble scoring in Europe. So if we do sign another striker and they were cup-tied it could give Fergie the option of resting our current strikers in the Premiership

Personally the cup tied issue is irrelvant to me. I want more depth for our Premiership run. The CL should be relatively smooth until the semis imo. At that point, anything can happen.

  Everything is ok, everything is great, we are good we do not need a thing, be happy, keep smiling, etc.
Wake up and smill the coffee, we are not, and we need 2 forwards and not one . And being 2nd best is not enough for us, WE ARE MANCHESTER UNITED.

Yes I remember he is one of those people who said we didn't need any new defender last season, and any fan who wanted to strengthen our team is glory hunter ;)

Which is precisely the reason why I believe SAF will not buy a striker in January
