N64

I play Mario party on it with some friends every now and then. I love it... Apart from the beyond stupid controllers. My favourite game has to be majoras mask though, a ly more difficult then the other Zeldas but it was so much fun. Turning into gorons/zoras was great fun.

I didn't like the N64 much. To be fair, I'm not a Nintendo person. The games are too kiddy, even though I was, umm, a kid then.

Anyone know why mine would decide to keep resetting itself at random times? I've checked the reset button and it isn't stuck, so I guess it might be the power adapter/lead. But I'd have thought it wouldn't be so random if it was the lead.

It did it about 1-2 years ago, but I did something (don't know what) and it stopped doing it.

Probably over heating? try take the back covers off and blow it out

Olly I assume you have blown into the console.

Yeah I had a go at blowing. I would have taken it apart to give it a clean (since blowing is actually not recommended at all), but it uses some special screws and I can't take them out.

I dunno if it would be overheating, it can be off for two days, I turn it on and then it resets after five seconds...?

We had a N64 when I was at Uni. That thing got kicked, thrown, dropped and had about 2 pints of dirty bong water spilled on it. Always worked. They most certainly don't make 'em like the used to.

Olly, if you have killed an N64 you should consider a career in demolition.

 I think I might look into it.

I think it's most likely to be the power lead. In the past my NES and Mega Drive power leads had to be positioned in a certain way before they'd work, I think because of the way they were wrapped up when being not used. So I guess something similar may have happened here.

The N64 was awesome. Defintitely the console I'm most sentimental about. A great range of games and the graphics were far supirior to the PS at the time. Only downside was the cost of the games.

All Nintendo cart consoles were the same. Like you I had some that went through an awful beating but always worked.

If they had any issues a quick blow and they were fixed

Mine would be the original Playstation.

The only game I enjoyed on the N64 was Mario64.

There was quite a few. On Koopas beach if you don't have the boost to do the tunnel jump you could take a right before and cut through the water. Get's you ahead by a couple seconds.

Rainbow world has another jump but it's feckin hard. Literally when you start you need a boost to do it you do a suicide boost to the left and you land half way through.

There's one on Kalamari desert where you go through the train tunnel and you skip the level but I've never done it.

I've just done a youtube search and all I can say is wow. There are some good players out there.

You dont need the boost if you are good :D

I even liked games like Rogue Squadron on N64, and I'm not a Star Wars fan. And Mario Kart64 remains the best-handling racing game I've played, never mind its cartoonish nature. Some console, that. Love the Dreamcast best but the N64 was damn good too.

I had Rogue Squadron too, great game and like you I am no starwars fan. That console had a lot of high quality games

Zelda
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Mario tennis
Mario 64
Mario Kart
WWF No Mercy
Conkers bad fur day
ISS 98

Just a few examples of my favourites

ISS 98 was a beast of a game.

No gaming experience nowadays will compare to the multiplayers me and friends used to have back in the day at goldeneye. Simply amazing fun.

I don't take things apart. I learnt that years ago from old Walkmans and the like. They simply never work again after I get my hands on them

My screwdriver broke so I can't take the rest of the screws out. Probably for the best, I wouldn't want a repeat of what happened when I took my PS3 controller apart.

I'm thinking of buying a super nintendo and n64. I don't even know how to make them work on modern tvs though. Olly, has becoming gif king gone to your head? 3rd person ffs!

The gamecube pad was near enough perfection. I don't think I've held a more comfortable controller. Also had some great games, an underated console.

Edit : inb4 gamecube thread
Saw this post and just had to agree. Other than the Z button on the Gamecube pad, it has everything. Even for people who were new to the controller, the different shapes / sizes of the buttons made it easier to understand than anything else. It was just so comfy as well for the majority of people.

The only real complaints would come from people with far above average sized hands, so maybe they could have released something bigger. Although the Wavebird Wireless Controller (I think this was the first wireless controller released) was the dog's bollocks and felt a bit bigger even if it wasn't.

On-topic, the N64 was brilliant. It's hard to believe that it was basically the fact they used a CD for the games that the Playstation took off (or at least it seemed so). If not for this, the N64 might have done better. Not enough people experienced the great games this console had to offer, which is one reason why I can understand the countless remakes on newer consoles from Nintendo. They stand the test of time as well, that is a certainty.

I also recently got a Gamecube Emulator on my computer. Mainly just to play Pikmin before I get a Wii U, so I can get Pikmin 3 and understand it more haha.

So much fun.

The three controllers to my N64 are so worn out that it's almost impossible to play it anymore.

It's a shame that the Banjo Kazooie series left Nintendo, really loved the depth in those games. Jet Force Gemini was probably the best game I played that I never finished.

Those people were always fun back in the day, trying so hard to look mature and appear not to love video games by owning a playstation and calling the N64 kiddy.

I owned the N64 and obviously enjoyed playing games on it. But it wasn't one of my favorite consoles.

I never had one of these, I had the PSOne.

I remember going around to my mates every day after school to play that WWF wrestling game.

Awesome game especially 4 player, as was Smash Bros

The golden age, N64 and PSOne going head to head. Fantastic games on both consoles. N64 wins in terms of platforming though. OCoT and Banjo Kazooie are still the benchmark for platforming excellence. OCoT obviously surpasses just one single genre though.

Dunno, although I far preferred the N64 the Ps1 beat it quite well in terms of sale.

The golden age fom me was the one before that. Mega drive v SNES. Both sold extremely well, and it was quite close I think

Again Nintendo was the better for me in that too

N64 was great. Banjo kazooie, Diddy Kong Racing, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, ISS64/98, mario golf. Excellent games.
