I can't wrap my head around how you can associate Musk with democracy or freedom of speech when he's been so openly against both for months.

Save for outliers like Putin or Kim, who don't even extend their power outside of their country anyway, I don't think anyone in recent times has caused anywhere near as much damage to freedom of speech and democracy as these two have.

"Freedom of speech" for these people means the ability to be racist/homophobic/transphobic/misogynist without any sort of pushback. They don't care about what freedom of speech actually means, they just want to be able to send racist abuse on the internet and then not have to deal with the consequences of someone sending that to their workplace.

If you look at it like that then you understand why they think Musk and Trump stand for free speech

I think that’s correct, yes. I’ve come across some of these ‘free speech absolutists’ in domestic politics here and what they’d usually mean by that is freedom of their speech, not paying any heed to others or more accurately they’d usually try to restrict others ability to share views opposite to theirs.

Huge swathes of the media have been shit for decades. Owned by the rich to serve the rich etc. The noise that social media has created has bizarrely amplified the shitter end of the media.

True. Because it's run by exactly the same type of people as mainstream media.

The trick is social media amplifying the voices from people who "look like you or me" but say what the people in control want to say to create consensus.
