Muhammad has become the most popular baby name in England and Wales.

No reference into the article as to why that would be the case - a lot of Muslims will name their child Muhammad as a first name but then use their second name in the way we do. For example my wife doesn't go by her *first name* and her brother/father are both called Muhammad but go by their second name.

Pardon my ignorance, but isn't it somewhat common in Arabic culture for this name to be given to sons as a middle name? Or is this exclusively about the first name?

Sure, but how can I feel we're being invaded if they included that in the article?

Yeah this is always going to beat other names because it’s chosen 90% of the time. Other religions have more varied names so there won’t be an outright leader in that regard.

If you compared it to proportion of population I’m sure you’d get completely different results. A bit of nothing news really that will be gobbled up by the Facebook boomers.

Nobody wants to hear your informed opinion. Will you ever stop?

If I go to the pub tonight I know which one will bring it up.

Yeah. Mohammed/Mohamed has been the "most popular" name in Brussels since 2009, by a mile.

Sadly the knuckledraggers are going to say, and think, that you could name 100% of Muslim boys Muhammad and there shouldn’t be enough Muslims in (insert country) for it to be the top name, even at that rate.

"It has been among the top 10 names for baby boys since 2016, but has now overtaken the previous favourite, Noah, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS)."

the arabs beating the jews, yet again.

The lack of imagination is my only criticism.

I know Muslims always want to hear from a non-religious white guy so please mix it up a bit going forward.

The ONS said on Thursday that pop culture "continues to influence" name choices, citing singers Billie Eilish and Lana Del Rey, the Kardashian-Jenner family's children Reign and Saint, and film stars Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy.

Other music artist names Miley, Rihanna, Kendrick and Elton also saw an increase in 2023. That was likely due to album releases, touring, or high-profile performances by Miley Cyrus, Kendrick Lamar, Elton John, and Rihanna, the ONS said.

Things like this annoy me more. Anybody calling their kid Lana del Rey needs a head check ffs.

While true I don't know if it actually helps. If I'm not mistaken the issue that a particular mob has is with the idea that foreign cultures are becoming more present and your explanation only illustrate it. The are more families that Muhammad has an important name.

Muhammad is very common Muslim name, by default it should win. Nothing to see here

It's like Jesus in Spain i think
he only goes there for the slags and the cheap all-inclusive holidays.

Jesus isn't that popular in Spain.

It was similar with Maria in my part of the Netherlands a few generations back. In fact, both my grandmothers were called Maria, and various of their cousins as well. Their day-to-day names were usually variants (Miet, Marie, etc), but Maria would very likely have been first by far in that area for girls back then.

Bloody Catholics!

Sure, but less than 1% of all babies born in 2023 in the UK were called Muhammad.

Of course. But you know that they don't care about that kind of facts, they only care about optics.

That’s interesting. The most popular name in the UK only applies to 1% of babies?

I’d be very curious to know the % back when Jack/Joe/John were popular and people were picking from a much smaller pool of names.

Yeah, the top names are rarely above a handful of thousands and then it goes down by hundreds.

And the pool of names has been fairly large for a long time, people use saints and their variations.
