MSC: Bury vs. United

Jensen saves Cole's penalty. Holden - with a rapists beard - misses. Still 1-0

Pereira scores - Bury score - James scores a great pen - Bur score again, 3-2 United. Thorpe can win it

He's still young, one would expect some things wrong in his game

Of course, but I just don't personally think we'll see him be able to breakthrough into our team which is a contrast to what I thought of him 18 months ago so I hope he can prove me wrong.

I think one disadvantage that he has is that he had missed quite a bit of football last season so hopefully he improves.

Edit: He's playing well today though, and I do like him.

Wilson seems to have physically matured a fair bit during the summer.
I really like Pereira he took a really confident penalty.

Agreed. He and James looked very confident allround

Well, that was fun. Keano's touch isn't quite there yet but it's great to see that his predatory instincts are still firmly intact.

Right wing, hardly involved apart from his well taken goal.

I just can't work out where Blacketts best position is. He looks better in midfield than in defence, and is a proper footballer, but just lacks... something. I can't put my finger on it. He really looks like he's got everything to have a good career somewhere, but where I can't quite figure out.
Think his biggest problem is concentration hell do something well and then make a mess of the same thing a minute later and has a slight tendency to fall asleep at the back sometimes seems like he's overly confident and not careful enough with what he's doing

Varela is also looking better and better every game.

Good practice for the kids facing some quite strong physical play that most failed to cope with first half but accepted they had to battle and improved a lot 2nd half.

One player who seems to be struggling this season is M. Keane not sure what's up with him at the moment.

I have to say that I was expecting him to have gone out on loan by now. Did really really well at Leicester and is down the pecking order with there being 5 senior centre backs already. Can't believe that there hasn't been any interest in him so unless he has deliberately asked to stay for the first half of the season in case of Carling Cup appearances, it doesn't make sense. That said, keeping Cole and Thorpe as well here is a little nonsensical to me. Both need some first team football.

I agree. He has a real tenacity about him too.

Yeah, they were quite obviously bigger and stronger so were able to knock us off the ball a bit in the first half which stopped us getting into any sort of rhythm. Nice to see us passing it quicker in the second half which made our football a bit more fluid and harder for them to disrupt so easily.

When Lingard went to Birmingham, Warren Joyce said a couple of the other lads would be following suit in the next week or so, I expected Keane to be one of them. The loan last season benefitted him a lot.

Agreed about Thorpe, I would really love him to go on loan. He could potentially be challenging for squad place when Rio retires, he's absolutely solid and I'd love to see him given a chance on loan to show us that he can cut it against the big boys. He's future captain material (not that I'm suggesting he'll be our captain).

Thought a lot of our players struggled last night.

Sutherland was really sloppy, M.Keane was sloppy, Thorpe wasn't his usual self, W.Keane looked exactly as rusty as you would expect from a player who has been out for 15 months, Pereira was completely anonymous, Wilson scored that good goal and did really nothing else.

Only 3 players who did well for me was Varela, Cole and Blackett who was MOTM.

Rooney was superb btw...way too good for that level of football.

I thought james did pretty well, defended far better than Blackett and the switch helped the team a lot.

Thanks jb.

Good performance from Varela. He was constantly involved, both defensively and offensively, and I didn't realise he got the assist for Wilson's goal.

He has really good off the ball movement too. Moves into space to make himself available as soon as he releases the ball.

Manchester United Reserves won 4-2 on penalties at Bury following a 3-3 draw in the Manchester Senior Cup at Gigg Lane.

Tom Thorpe tucked away the winning spot-kick after an entertaining game as Wayne Rooney's brother John netted twice for the home side and, although James Wilson and two-goal Will Keane were on the scoresheet, Anthony Dudley forced a the shoot-out with an 80th-minute leveller.

The Reds could have few complaints about trailing at half time after struggling to make any in-roads towards Brian Jensen's goal. Reece James, recently recalled from his loan with Carlisle, shot well wide after Will Keane headed on a Larnell Cole pass but most of the noteworthy moments came at the other end.

A poor kick-out by Jonny Sutherland was beyond Charni Ekangamene and Greg McDermott fed Rooney for an unerring finish that punished the visitors with 23 minutes on the clock. Referee Simon Mather decided Guillermo Varela did not handle in the box afterwards, despite Bury's appeals, and Marcos Navas, brother of Manchester City's Jesus, flashed a drive off target.

Five minutes before the interval, Steve Jennings connected at the back post with a volley that thumped against the bar as the Shakers were good value for their lead. United needed to respond following Warren Joyce's team-talk and Andreas Pereira was unable to provide a finish to match a purposeful run.

An equaliser was forthcoming following a first move of genuine quality from the holders. Thorpe burst out of defence to allow Will Keane to intelligently nudge the ball wide to Varela. The Uruguayan slipped a perfect through ball into the path of Wilson, who poked past the advancing Jensen in confident fashion.

Those expecting things to turn in United's favour were wrong as Rooney remained a threat, forcing a sprawling save out of Sutherland before rasping a left-footed piledriver past the keeper to restore Bury's lead with only 21 minutes remaining.

Thankfully, Joyce's side were swiftly back on level terms as Tyler Blackett, pushed into midfield for the second half, embarked on a powerful run that led to Will Keane turning his marker and supplying a terrific finish past Jensen for his second goal in two games since returning from injury.

After Pereira saw a free-kick fisted away by Jensen, more good work by Blackett, who capitalised on hesitancy by Jennings, set up Will Keane again for a side-foot into the inviting target. It looked like the visitors had done enough but substitute Dudley raced through to get his shot away as Thorpe challenged to beat Sutherland and make it 3-3.

So a shoot-out was required and Will Keane, Pereira, James and Thorpe all scored from the spot with only Cole missing due to a Jensen save. Shaun Harrad and Euan Holden missed the target for Bury to enable United to win 4-2 on penalties to take the three points, with the Shakers still picking up a fully-deserved point. The Reds face Bolton in the competition on Monday night.

United: Sutherland; Varela, M.Keane, Thorpe, Blackett; A.Pereira, Ekangamene, Cole, James; Wilson (Grimshaw 78), W.Keane. Subs not used: Barmby, Henderson, McNair, Love.
