Movie writing

How would it work, people who don't live near each other writing a script?

oh the joys of the internet :)

first step would be throwing some ideas down in word. Ideas, for start, middle, end. Peices you'd maybe like to see worked into the script somewhere. Then the people involved email their bit to each other to read it, give feedback, what works, what doesn't work, improvements etc.

my problem is that i go through periods where i can either be extremely creative or extremely lazy. when it's lazy days i need motivating.

I'm the same way. I'll go months without doing anything, then one day pop out 5-10 pages of something.

What do you do by the way gb? Just curious.

And how the hell do get to know all this stuff, then?
Well everybody gets into it in different ways. I've known photographers who turn to cinematographers, people who started as Production Assistants who are now cinematographers, it varies. I can only speak how I learned things. I got an internship, started working, got my name about town, worked more, always asked question while on set.

I am now an EMEA Account Manager for an outsourcing company. My job is to make sure the teams in Dublin and in Helsingborg deliver the quality and service level agreements to our client. Yes, it is boring. Its also very stressful right now and completely fecking me off.

Sounds like I have to see it all for myself, before starting anything.

Have you always wanted to write movies?

for years yes. I have some great fecking ideas when i sleep or day dream. the problem is i never really know how to get myself going. I'll start things then give up because its not progressing as quickly as i like or a different idea comes into my head

Me Geebs.

I am very nearly a published author. :D

what you publishing Liv?

My novel.

I'm not publishing it myself.

Well, actually I'm jumping the gun. We haven't finished it yet. But it's been looked at by an editor friend, and given the thumbs up.

You shouldnt give it up just because it doesnt progress quickly enough. Besides, they say writing a good screenplay is about 90 pct preparation and only 10 pct writing....and I suppose writing equals rewriting and rewriting and rewriting.

I think you should try to follow it through so you have a finished script and try to pitch it to agents and producers at screenwritersonline and scriptblaster. They take unsolicited material from time to time in connection with their masterclasses and you dont need to participate in the class to enter your pitch.

The problem is that usually nobody wants to read unsolicited screenplays so it can be really hard to get started. It may actually be easier if you write a play, too. Agencies such as PFD accept unsolicited plays so if they would take one of your plays, you'd have an agent and would get help with your screenplay, too.

It's also possible to join Kevin Spacey's Triggerstreet. You need to read the rules and conditions first before you join though but it's a good way to be read and get constructive feedback and as far as I'm aware it doesnt cost anything. Some of the users are professional readers and get screenplays assigned to them by production companies so if they believe you're on to something, I wouldnt bet against it.

Anyway I would like to apply to be on the team. :)

Don't you know any publishers Liv? :)

Corny, gratuitous.

I don't mind fantasy, but I don't like things that can, and do, happen. Like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

I'll have some thought on that over the next few days. Hopefully some ideas will pop into my head during a visit to the land of nod..

I've got my own zombie story in the pipe line. It's about third in line and evolving all the time, but like GB, I'll have days where I'll be able to do 10 pages and days when I can't even bring myself to think about it.

Sharing ideas to write a script, an idea frought with possible troubles and trip-ups, interesting nonetheless.

Indeed it could lead to some problems, but it might help whoever chips in with something to get inspired and make their own stuff. Might get people like gb and myself to be less lazy.

I don't want to join your team as my knowledge (and interest I suppose) of zombie films is limited. I havent watched that many films of that particular genre because I feel that if you've watched one, then you've watched them all. I basically think a lot of them lack a lot of depth, even zombie films need to be character driven in order to work.

I wish you good luck with your project. I think it's a brilliant initiative, I really do!
