Mourinho's post match comments

Those comments aren't as shocking as the ones saying the team gave everything.
They did give everything. There was just no intelligence to our play. Manic running and long passes galore.

I doubt you'll find a serious fan on here who honestly expected us to win the competition. There's no shame in getting knocked out by one of the best sides in Europe, especially if the team really made a go of it and gave it their all. That wasn't the case last night though. That's why people are disappointed and rightfully so.
You are right there is no shame in losing , if you lose while playing good attacking football, create many chance and just on the night beaten by the better team.
This was not the case last night, were were beaten by a poor team, at times, we looked like we were playing for penalties, the only time we woke up was when 2 down and then we get the bullshit after match comments by Jose, he does not want to make a drama and is not shocked !!! , I want him to make a massive drama out of it and be angry about it.

That’s a factual statement. He just stated the obvious there.
Would be like the reporter stating "Dont worry Jose, you were sacked after plummeting Chelsea to the relegation zone. This isnt so bad, really."

Also factually correct but irrelevant and unnecessary.

He said , he did his best and the players did there best, this is just not true.
Savilla played well and hide the ball , WTF is he going on about , why cant he just say we played shit, I got it wrong and the players will be doing extra training or fined or something, other than the bullshit he is coming out with.
Iam not one of these that want Jose out , but FFS he has really pissed me off.

If you can't see why there's something wrong with a manager referencing the times he's beat his current employer to defend such an abysmal result against a team like Sevilla, filled with poor tactical choices, I don't know what to say to you...

He doesn't need to defend himself to the media tbh.

To be fair, most of Sevilla's shots were from way out and no danger at all, until United went all attack and allowed them space for counters.

That's true, but that actually makes it worse for me. Prior to Ben Yedder coming on, they were absolutely toothless and there for the taking. Why on earth would Jose be so cautious with his tactics then? If you know their top scorer and only real threat is benched, surely you can attack more freely? Makes no sense.

He’s clearly saying it in a way to protect himself and talk himself up. It’s a baffling comment to make especially after a pathetic performance. I don’t know how people can’t see what he’s doing, he’s always played the media to suit himself and is doing the same with that comment.

Exactly.

No one here should actually believe he was happy with the way we played. He would have given the players a proper go in the dressing room but he has no need to divulge anything to the media.

There'd even be no shame of going out to Sevilla if we played much better but things the refs fecking us over, hitting the woodwork... I mean I wouldn't have had an issue if the team gave it a real go

True. It's lack of intensity and negativity that I hate to watch. Unfortunately, that has become the norm under Jose.

My fantasy post match comments.

"Look I got this wrong. I've just been into the lads to apologise. They are exhausted and gutted. They did everything I asked them to do to the letter. But we are out and that's the reality. I need to show some humility, on reflection I've got this wrong...big time. In asking the players not to lose I've lost sight of how to win. I'm not going to change everything but I'll show more intent going forward. This is Manchester united and somewhere along the way I'd forgotten that. I'm sorry."

The thing that's worrying is that he is becoming so defeatist, like LVG and Moyes before him. He's acting like it's no biggie that we've just been knocked out of the biggest club competition.

Exactly.

They players did fine with the confines of how they were asked to play.

Saying "we didn't deserve the win" or "the better team lost" is a far cry from "I failed". Expecting any top manager to say the latter out publicly is, by literal definition, delusional. Why? Because they don't do that and it's not going to change any time soon. That's why you lot are here on a forum and people like Mourinho are managing football clubs. I'm not intending to insult, but I'm not going to sugarcoat it to appease your feelings. And Mourinho sugarcoating his post match comments or saying something in a perfect way to appease you isn't going to change the fact that we played shit and are out of the CL because of it. So if you're going to direct your anger at anything, direct it at that. This comment is a nothing story, just like my response to everyone's rage regarding said comment.

Surely you mean ‘us lot’ not ‘you lot’?

Who are you?

He's more obsessed with attacking pundits than any intent to play some attacking football.

That's even worse than what he said. Those kind of comments would indicate that he had totally bottled it.

I imagine what he tried to mean was we've been knocked out in the past, including by his team's, but we still come back - essentially it's happened and we need to get back on track

However he comes out as a complete and utter knob here

Why are people surprised about these comments. This is just as much classic Jose as taking those "hilarious" digs at other people.

Then man's a twat.

Not really. Moyes got to the same spot in the Champions League in one of his two seasons, and LVG also got us back into the CL only to go out in the meekest way possible. This wasn't a knock out tired against a top European side that we lost, it was Seville.

In that case you are belittling our league position. LVG barely got us in at 4th and we were out of the top 4 in his second season. Moyes didn't even make top 4.

We were in Europa last season and won it, the season before that we were out in the group stages, the season before that we went one step further and got into the QFs after beating Olympiacos . Before that it was Round of 16 again and before that out of the group stages. So I think it's fair to say we're more or less maintaining our level here.

The only reason we should be disappointed is if we expected more. Did you expect more this season?

Just when the fan's opinion of you is at its lowest you decide to twist the knife? Jose going to start a war of words with the millions of fans now since that's what he's good at and distract us from the football we're playing?

If he'd been honest and admit he screwed up and will do it differently in the future I'd have been pissed off, but it would at least appear like there's a way back for him, at this point he's got to do something special to make most of us on his side again, but I have little faith he can take the club further forward.

It seems harsh to say I want him gone after he has undoubtedly improved us and there aren't really any other options. But what can he do from here to continue improvement? If he hasn't already lost the dressing room it doesn't seem far away.

People chuckling at Spurs going out. At least they went out to a Juve side that look like they could win their league and have vast experience. We went out to a side who are a distant fifth in La Liga and are on a negative goal difference, which should tell you that their defence could be got at.

The comments are not disgraceful, they're just stupid as feck. It's needless sticking the knife in after a defeat, except you'd usually expect it from the opposition manager, not our fecking own. Doesn't surprise me that he includes his two wins against the club though as the guy is so egotistical.

Starting to really resent him if I’m honest. When I went to bed last night I thought I’d wake up a littler calmer, and soak in what’s happened.

I’m angrier now than I was last night. Those comments are just disgraceful, and I fully believe he’s happy with the performance last night. That’s the worst thing.

It does if you consider he’s saying that “from personal experience I’ve seen .... happen and United overcame it”.
I think that's his way of saying that United aren't good enough to challenge in Europe yet so we have to accept it. Fans shouldn't make the mistake of taking those comments too personally. I forgot to add Jose is also a poor loser. He'd rather go out now to Seville than use up more games; more travelling on a tournament we can't win. Imagine we got to the semi's against one of Real Madrid, Barca, Man City or Bayern. We'd lose over two legs. That's four games used up plus all the travelling. Plus that would hurt everyone more, including Mourinho. It's easier for Mourinho to lose this way and quickly move on than suffer. He knows that this United side isn't his own image yet. Left back, central defence, midfield needs overhauling. I think he doesn't rate Pogba and will sell him and I think Martial will go too.

Play so defensivelessly,so cautiously like we're massive underdogs to Sevilla at home. Play shite, hoof the ball to Fellaini , football stodge all the time we have the attacking riches of Sanchez, Mata, Pogba, Martial, Rashford, Lukaku available.

Mourinho appears to be disconnected from the present. He has sucked all joy and creativity out of this team and, at least for last night, has turned our players into nervous bags of defensive anxiety ridden, jelly blobs who look absolutely clueless as to what they're supposed to be doing. Bizarre defensive tactics and even more bizarre crowing about his former victories.

These really are very weird things to say for a guy who is the manager. It's like he hasn't really identified with rhe role. It's no drama. Really? It's normal for United. To shit themselves against Sevilla? Really? No passion and no integrity, only caution from the egoic manager which was reflected in our shambolic play and without integrity he'll lose the dressing room as players will certainly pick up on this.

Completely wrong formation/line-up and cowardly instructions to the players which baffled and dispirited our footballers before they kicked a ball and then he has the perverse audacity to crow about beating United here twice. It's like he has a perverse split personality and is retrogressovely able to fall into past Mourinho and actually enjoy our losing in a twisted way.

Sick and tired of his crowing about the past to cover up his present cowardly shambles of managerial inadequacy.
Eitherway I hope the board are watching carefully and do the right thing at the end of the season. The man needs a break from footie and footie needs a break from Mou.

The comment about us playing well beggars belief. Yes we started well, as we seem to do in a number of games ( see matchday threads to see how long it is before people change their tune). Then as usual we get scared stupid and start dropping back and start the old hoofing. I know he wants to protect the players, but he had to change the team. Why? I also agree with Lukaku that some were hiding. We need a team who will stand up and be counted.

Sabotage might be too strong a word but I feel you may be right otherwise; even before this match, Jose said that we're not one of the best sides in the competition...and to state such a negative - though honest - thing might've revealed his true thinking.
Glad you can see what many fans can't. Jose does have our best interests at heart. Better to not suffer in the champions league and save matches. He threw that match, not the players, he did. He is a saboteur in the true sense of the word. He sabotaged Liverpool last week. He has chosen to sabotage the side by changing it around and giving them really weird tactical instructions. How else do you explain the poor showing?

Agree with both your posts, we have one good game and then we fall apart again.
When I was watching I really thought we were playing for penalties, maybe the worst European performance I have ever seem at OT.

He won't be happy about the performance, don't pay much attention to what he says to the media.

What he says publicly isn’t necessarily what he thinks privately. Just because he said he thought we played well doesn’t mean he believes it.

Wow! The comments in this thread are laughable!
He’s a Cnut
No it’s football- it happens
He doesn’t get it etc

We’re beginning to sound like Arse Fan TV. One knee jerk reaction after another

Think I’ll take a break until the FA Cup game. The negativity isn’t good for anyone’s health

Most managers will say if their team have had a disappointing performance. I do not know what he thought his comment would do. He is just making himself sound incredibly stupid and delusional.

Arrogance at its best by Jose. Stupid comnents, not sure the players will like that. The beginning of a meltdown.
