Most Disappointing Video Games - 2011

1. LA Noire

2. Arkham City

3. Can't say I've really felt disappointed by any other game.

Bemuses me how some bugs can make you list Skyrim as a disappointment, Lancey.

Dragon Age 2 surely?

LA Noire

umm struggling for a 3rd that I've actually played (not played that many games this year tbh)

Great game. Disappointed that it became practically unplayable after my save file reached a certain point.

I'm at 70+ hours, with a save file that's larger than 10 megs, still playing fine for me for the most part... but I understand that it's hugely different from person to person. If it really became unplayable for you then I'll grant you that. Still, most single player campaigns don't give you more than a solid 30-35 hours of play, so that's something I guess.

L.A Noire for sure. Fun for about 2 hours until you realised it was the same nonsense all over again.

The Witcher 2 was beautiful but the combat was really boring and it was just a hack and slash for the most part. A good game but not as great as I'd hoped it'd be.

Nah the Witcher 2 was cool. Shit, tits and bitches all over the place!

As a huge Warhammer fan, Space Marine was very disappointing. WoW: Cataclysm too even though it hit right before the end of 2010, I started off in January.

LA Noire - Got bored very quickly. And the wife liked it which is always a bad sign.

Saints Row has always been a poor man's GTA so don't know why anyone was dissapointed. It's a tacky, horrible franchise which needs to be stopped now God Dammit!

Definitely LA Noire. I only bought 3 or 4 games this year but this one really did disappoint.

Skyrim.

Everything I did lacked purpose. Why should I level up when I could complete the questline in one hit without doing side quests?

It was so forgettable that I only just remembered it was released this year.

I'll second this. I recall anticipating this game quite a lot, only for it to fall flat with recurring dungeons and a shite, disjointed storyline. The description "Mass Effect with swords" is an insult to Mass Effect. Fingers crossed they don't rush the release of the third.

LA Noire and Saints Row 3 were massive disappointments.

Have to say I enjoyed Arkham City, the main story and side missions were pretty good.

Homefront for me, what a large pile of poo!

Supposedly written (or at least co-written) by John Milius I thought it would have some sparkling dialogue, interesting twists, real character development. No, no it didn't. It was a cheesy, cliche-ridden journey into the banal. The characters were terrible 2 dimensional cutouts, and when one died, it was setup to be a poignant scene of loss and remorse. In reality it was tedious and I just wanted to click on the "skip scene" button - but it wouldn't let me.

The level design was clearly ripped from other, better, games of the genre and the graphics were only marginally better than that of the PS2. The single-player campaign lasted about as long as a fart in a hurricane.

Remarkably, it's getting a sequel?

That has absolutely nothing to do with it. Unlike most short single player campaign games, Skyrim has no multiplayer. Given that Skyrim's the type of game designed to be played for 100+ hours, if it becomes unplayable after 70+ hours, then it can be considered a complete failure. To top it all off Bethesda seem to have no plans to release a proper patch anytime soon.

;)

I knew someone would latch on to that one.

A whole heap, then... Fine... considering the scope of the game I'd expect as many as I've seen, tbh.

So if a game has a large scope, its okay if it becomes unplayable for many people? Did you see the video IGN (or one of the other gaming sites) did? The game registered between 0-5 frames per second after a certain point, the lowest they've ever measured.

Bethesda sold a broken product and won GOTY, what a complete joke.

I'm not sure I've played any game within weeks of its release date and not seen a shedload of complaints about bugs. I agree it's pathetic, and we should expect better, but as a complaint it seems to have lost any gravitas when virtually every game is declared bug-ridden and unplayable.

Having said that, it's pretty rare now that I play a game before its final patch has been released so maybe I'm less concerned about it than others.

Dragon Age 2 is a lazy pile of shit. Even as a standalone title it would be fecking atrocious, but the high quality of Origins makes it look even worse.

Fwiw i'm through the 90hour mark on skyrim ps3 and haven't had any lagging issues at all. Still get random crashes which is annoying but that's all

Skyrim has never crashed for me. New Vegas, on the other hand....

Uncharted 3 - never blew me away at any point like the first or second. Also seemed a lot easier, and yet at times the general mechanics and camera-work especially in the overused 'run away' platform moments was just crap.

LA Noire is the major one. I liked the concept, and thought it was great at first, but they focused on the realism so much that they forgot why people buy video games...for some sort of enjoyment.

I'm past 70 hours and it plays fine for me. I can't speak for others but that's where I'm coming from. I didn't see the video you spoke of, but was that with autosave on, was it patched by then? Was that at the end of a five hour stint or is it how the game acts most of the time? And 70 hours is FAAAAAAAAR longer than I've spent on any other game barring FIFA or FM or the like.

And I don't bother much with multiplayer for most games, so that kind of goes out for me as well. Again, I don't expect my criteria to make sense for you or the rest, but to label the game a joke seems strong to me, unless it really is the case that others have such way worse performance than me.

For many others the game becomes unplayable. Thats not an exaggeration either.

The test they performed is below, the game registered 0 FRAMES PER SECOND

Digital Foundry vs. PS3 Skyrim Lag • Articles • Eurogamer.net

Please watch that and tell me how exactly that's acceptable from any game, let alone one which won GOTY. Its a complete joke. Bethesda sold a broken product, surprised there hasn't been a lawsuit against them yet.

I've never had it that bad, and nothing like lag when I first load up, usually takes a fair few hours. But I take your point, as a whole it's not good enough.

But for me personally, who got to play the game a great deal without any hassles like that, and still do after 70 hours, it's the game of the year.

This. Completely agree, I sold it before the bloke apparently started becoming a dick.

Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 (Although Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 is a good game, you had to buy a new disc. The original was dissappointing)

Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition (New patch for "2012" edition was released in December, free, and fixed a lot of the problems. But again the original release was dissappointing)

Certainly agree with L.A Noire... a somewhat great concept, ruined by a poor story, poor repetition, and the whole "face acting capture" thing didn't work half as well as they claimed it would.

The Lead character is an absolute twat. Worst protagonist for any video game that I've ever played.

I've still got it, but I think I played up until about the halfway point of the game. By then, I realised that it was completely repetitive. The searching for clues thing was cool at first, however by the halfway point, what was exciting about my character walking around the room ten times to try and find something?

The story was also very poor. Not gripping at all, while the lead character who you played as paled in comparison to previous protagonists from Rockstar games.

The new Assassins creed is wank. I can't get into it and despite it having a few cool things to try I found it poor.

Did you play the previous ones? I have played all but the most recent one. I suspected they were taking the piss releasing them so often so I skipped it.
