Monaco striker Park set for Arsenal deal

Monaco striker Park Chu-Young will complete a move to Premier League side Arsenal this weekend.

The South Korea captain, who has made over 91 appearances for the French club, is on his way to London for a medical in the next 24 hours.

Park was a former target for Premier League rivals Fulham.

The 26-year-old had completed a medical to sign for French side Lille, but a call from Gunners manager Arsene Wenger has prompted him head to London.

Lille were surprised on Saturday at the disappearance of Park, who failed to show up for the second part of his medical having agreed terms to join the French champions.

Lille president Michel Seydoux said: "We haven't had a telephone call, nothing.

"From what we understand he could be at Arsenal," the Lille boss said.

Park had been due at the northern French side to continue with the traditional pre-signing medical which he had begun on Friday.

"Like Monaco, Lille are baffled," added Seydoux, adding: "Everything [about his move] had been agreed."

Park scored an own goal in a 4-1 defeat by Argentina at the 2010 World Cup. However, he redeemed himself in South Korea's next match against Nigeria by scoring a crucial free-kick in a 2-2 draw, allowing the Koreans to advance to the round of 16.

Replacement for Bendtner i think.

He's a good player but nothing special, also he's more a number 10 than a number 9.

From what I know of him, he's South Korea's captain and a decent player overall. Looking at his stats they aren't exactly prolific though. Seems like another "value" signing for Wenger.

At least Arsenal can say he brings experience and will help their popularity in Asia.

Wenger had said Bendy was leaving and Arsenal were going to sign a striker.
Was expecting someone with a higher profile.
Never seen him play

I've watched him many times for S. Korea, he's a very good player.

According to Wikipedia, he scored 25 goals over 3 seasons in Monaco.

Less of a useful transfer and more of a creative way for Wenger to funnel a little dough to his recently relegated former club?

Is this true?

One of the biggest obstacles for Park to navigate is his obligation to join the military. All able-bodied Korean men are required to perform two years' conscription.

Park, who is currently enrolled as a postgraduate student at Seoul's Korea University, will have no alternative but to be conscripted by the end of 2013 at the latest, when he will turn 28.

Is this true?

Apparently, yes.

Under the current law, all able-bodied men aged over 20 have a duty to serve in the military, with the exception of athletes who have claimed either Olympic medals or gold medals in Asian Games.

In the 2002 World Cup, the government exempted the national squad, including Park Ji-sung and Lee Young-pyo, from military service under a recommendation from the football association.
...

Among the current 23-man national team squad, 15 players including Ki Sung-yueng with Scotland side Celtic and Park Chu-young of AS Monaco, must serve in the military under the current law.

They apparently must serve 2 years before reaching the age of 30.

He has a knack for scoring goals, but I've always felt the Park Chu Young lacked strength and size.

He is nothing like Park Ji Sung when it comes to stamina and work ethic.

It'll be interesting to see if he can handle the Premiership.

Park Ji Sung got the military exemption as a reward for his special service to his nation in the 2002 World Cup.

I don't think Park Chu Young has performed equally for his country, and therefore I'm guessing there'd be an uproar here if he were granted military exemption just because he is a famous footballer.

He scored 12 in 33 in a less than stellar side and earned player of the year awards for Monaco. He'll be useful. More of a power striker in the Bent and Cole way. It'll enable Van Persie to drop in the hole like he prefers.

He'll do well.

How much are they getting him for? They have around £50m and I just don't get why they don't spend it on some nice proven players.

Maybe as a peace offering we could send Chamakh.

Would be interesting to see how many of Wenger's signings have come from the French league or are french.

I reckon its about 70%

I don't think this is true. Sure he's not a typical #9 but he's very much a mobile targetman, capable of playing wide without doubt but his best quality is his selfless running (as a #9).

If it's the same guy, he has the same name, then he's immense on PES6...get him in your Master League team

He's in my Levante team on FM.

Good player, can run the channels, finishes well, has an eye for a pass, fairly pacy but can go missing in the bigger games. *

*all that was based on football manager

He'll probably serve his military service as a footballer for Sangju Sangmu Phoenix. Decent player who might surprise a few if he's given the opportunity to do so.

Exactly how I'll describe him. Surprised Wenger didn't go for Son Heung-Min instead, he's a huge talent

Well Son looks to be one of the most promising in this age group while Park Chuyoung, while more proven, was a super cheap buy because no other clubs other than Lille were willing to buy him given his mandatory military service coming up. Arsenal needed a striker ASAP to fill some holes and I'm guessing Wenger decided to just use Park for a couple of years while they rebuild.

Do you think Wenger has ever heard of the phrase 'fiddling while Rome burns'?

Son is a fantastic player. I've always been impressed with him and he seems to have continued his stride into this season: 4 appearances, 2 goals.

I think he would have come over-priced because Hamburg need him. And Wenger hates to overspend.
