Modric may be available: Move heaven and earth to get him

33 in september and will demand high wages. I'd take him but we can't even get a right winger or proper fullbacks so i'd rather see we spend some money on those positions.

Did you deliberately ignore @AlexUTD mentioning two other young players (who both cost a lot of money) who would also be impacted by Modric joining? Its not Top Red stuff to be concerned about a 32 year old player taking minutes from 3 players 25 and under.

Some people like to ignore important points in a discussion that would make their points less valid mate.;)

Id fully agree with you.

However the questions begs, there is not an endless pit of cash for us to finance our purchases, I can appreciate that.

There is an opportunity cost to consider when making a purchase.

However if we managed our assets better and flogged some of the Deadwood in this instance especially fellani, it would have made some transfer funds and wages available to perhaps make this deal possible.

I'm not suggesting selling fellani would have financed the whole deal, but it would have made a considerable dent.

Probably all media speculation anyway, can't see Modric moving. If he does we should be all over it though. However I'd agree with you, not if it would financially prevent us amending more pressing concerns.

I wouldn't say no to Modric, obviously, I'm not insane, but would I choose him over a RW which we desperately desperately need? No.

Honestly don't see him being interested in coming to us, I think Italy at this stage of his career is perfect.

Fellaini was running out his contract so that would have only freed up some wages. I think we have enough money to buy Modric and two more players if we sell some players like Rojo and Darmian but apparently there aren't any good RW/CB players or they're not worth the money and I doubt CM is a priority for Mourinho right now.

Why on earth would Real Madrid sell Modric? Stupid rumor, he’s a hero down there and the best there is.

I'm just surprised that he might be available. I know his age is against him, but I'd sign him in a heartbeat if it were up to me to be honest. It would possibly be a league winning move it we pull it off. It's unlikely that we'll sign him of course.

If it is more of the supply not being available as opposed to a financial issue we should be pursuing this transfer and any others that may improve the squad.

Fellani was on 80-100k per week if I'm not wrong, maybe changed with the new contract. Would have covered a good bit of Modrics wage.

I believe despite his age he would improve us greatly, yes it would have a financial burden. However it would be worth it in terms of the impact he would hsve.

Our budget is not endless but we can make it stretch.

The amount of money we have wasted over last 5 years is incredible. I'm extremely confident if we did sign Modric that he would be one of the rare ones not the fall into this category.

If it does not have an opportunity cost which prevents us from signing more crucial targets in more vulnerable areas, if it's an upgrade I'm all for it.

Hopefully not a tactic to get a new deal with Real given it would be his last big contract

Can see him fitting in well. Particularly around anybody.

Best midfielder in the world right now and we can get 2-3 good years out of him but we desperately need wide players and ball playing CB..

Perisic and Brozovic probably put in a word. He's achieved all he can at Madrid and probably sees that they're not likely to improve on their recent success.

It would make sense if they get the right fee. Can't see us getting involved much as Jose loves him.

I doubt madrid would let him and Ronaldo leave in the same window.

He wouldn’t be taking minutes from Pogba or Fred and mentioning them in the same sentence as Pereira is silly.

As good as Modric is, we need a RW, LB & CB before we need another midfielder.
Matic, Fred and the Pog are starters.

Even if Real are interested in selling him, his price to inter would be 30m, the price for United would be 60m

Relative to his other seasons, he didn’t have a Great one. Howeve, He only played 19 times, averaging only 38 minutes per game and scored once. It was partly due to the fact that Jose often insisted playing him as a striker, where he really excells in his current midfield role. He got a pretty big 33% of the vote for worst signing !

I think the joke was that he was voted a worse signing than Alex Song, who played a lot more than him and contributed much less. I think this label hung over him for the next 2 or 3 seasons, even though he vastly improved in this time, until he became a mainstay.

That voting was done in December of his first season when Jose played him more in a number 10 role (so, 3 or 4 months after he came). In the second part of that first season and when he started playing deeper he was much better and became a regular starter so that voting looked pretty stupid very soon. The label certainly didn't hang over him for next 2 or 3 seasons, as in his second season he became one of Madrid's best players under Ancelotti.

As for the thread.
Positive:
He and Jose have a good relationship, Jose bought him and he was one of the players that didn't turn on him in that last season.
Modric might want a move from Madrid.

Negative:
Madrid won't sell after they sold Ronaldo. Maybe next season.
Doubt he would go back to EPL in his last few years, Serie A seems much more suitable.
He is practically 33, he will still influence the game for a year or maybe two, but he is bound to decline pretty soon. He is not Pirlo, even Xavi type of player, he works his socks off and is great both in transition and defence, so it will start to notice. If I'm honest I think it already started to notice for Madrid in this last season (he was good, but he had superior seasons in the past). The fact Real was out of the title race very early and focused only on CL helped him to save some energy for WC.

So, we missed this train a long time ago. Not gonna happen and don't mind if the club don't go in if he is available.

As much as I'd love him here, I feel with the needs of the squad and the way our midfield is at the moment with the personnel that make it up, he'd be a luxury signing almost. Also, I can't see Madrid selling him as he still has an awful lot to offer for a relatively old player.

Can only read through this thread with incredulity at anyone who supports Manchester United saying they wouldn't want Modric here, no matter the reason given.

I'd possibly understand if we were thriving in that area. Possibly.

Pogba has shown that, given the right platform, he can be as good (if not better) than Modric.

Can’t see him wanting to work with Mourinho again or Real Madrid selling to us.

Inter could work, he’d be a short ride over from Split and in the same team with a bunch of Croatians.

Far more likely than coming here. Italian fans would be loving both Ronaldo and Modric joining their league.

After playing for spurs I can’t see Modric returning to the premier league to play for us. Would love him here as he is a player that would propel us up the table, even aged 32 we could get a few good seasons from him.

Would be a phenomenal signing but he'll stay at Madrid. There just isn't a better midfielder around at the moment, just about anoyne will be a significant downgrade.

Is our scouting really that bad that we constantly have to be linked to these sorts of players? It’s like they boot up FIFA and sort by rating and then just check out the top three pages.

I’m not against getting some class players in, but it seems like this is mostly it nowadays.

Disagree. That would be the time when he played in front of our noses on a weekly basis, ready to become the best midfielder in the world and there were people not seeing it or wanting him here. And I'd possibly, maybe, would understand that if we were thriving in midfield then but we were far from that.

Now, at 33 there are pretty valid reasons for some people to have concerns.

He’s an amazing player but I think going to Serie A would be a much better move for him than joining a Premier League team. At 33 he needs a less physically demanding competition to extend his career, he would get it at Inter but not so much at United or any other PL team.

I wouldn’t be that shocked if Madrid let him go though. Moving Ronaldo indicated that they might be looking to undergo rebuilding, Modric is another player on the wrong side of 30 who has played a key role there recently.

Why would Real sell Modric? Why would anyone be against to sign him? And who is Xlatan?

When he was at Spurs, he was desperate to move to Chelsea, so playing for Spurs shouldn't stop him.

I saw an "evening with Cantona" at the Lowry Theatre the year before last. Asked by the audience who was the best player in the world, Cantona said Modric. He called Modric beautiful and the best playmaker and conductor of an offence that he had ever seen.

He also said Javier Pastore was the best player in the world

I undersatand hes a top quality player, but at the WC he had like 2/3 game where he was quality the rest he was pretty poor, same with La Liga, quite simply he would not cope with the pace of the premiership and CL every week. he was destroyed by spurs at Wembley because of the Pace. Italy would be perfect place for him to finish up if he was to leave Real.

1. He's just making leverage for negotiations with Madrid. He's going nowhere.

2. He's almost 33. Obviously a worldy but we'd pay some kind of record fee and get a season and a half out of him then end up in a Scholes situation all over again.

3. We already own one of the next-best creative CMs in the world, Pogba. He's 25 with room to grow. He faced up against Modric's midfield in the WC final and came out on top.

If Modric was playing for France that day and Pogba for Croatia do you think he would still 'come out on top'? Much deluded...

It’s Real Madrid and the player has 2 years of contract remaining. If he’s leaving, he’s not coming here. They’re gonna ask for over 60m from us and Woody is gonna have a stroke.
