Music Mockney's Classical Music Thread

the czech mastery of Antonin Dvorak by Jana Novakova-Vonaskova

Learning to play this on the piano at the moment. Although playing in Bb is no fun at all.

:D Rejoice! So many posts! Cheers everyone!

Now I'll probably kill the thread again with one of my old men :p, but being reminded of the fact Nani Nana really likes Salminen, I simply had to post this spinechilling Hagen's Watch --

Matti Salminen under Levine; Hagen's Watch from Wagner's Götterdämmerung

I knew it! To apologise for the old-man-thread-kill, here's beautiful Elin Manahan Thomas

singing BWV 1127 Alles mit Gott und nichts ohn' ihn --

Gösta Winbergh sings an absolutely breathtaking Dalla sua pace --

And here's Wunderlich in German [Nur ihrem frieden] --

Last but not least, the mighty Alfredo Kraus --

The absolutely heartbreaking end of Tannhäuser.

Alongside the last minutes of the '99 European Cup final, one of the few things in life which can give me goosebumps and make me cry just thinking about them.

Dein Engel fleht für dich an Gottes Thron,
er wird erhört: - Heinrich, du bist erlöst!

[Meier, Kollo and Weikl under Mehta]

Here's the libretto with translation [scroll down to 'Entzücken dringt durch meine Sinne...']

Waltraute is carrying this thread! Wonderful music.

Here's a little rarity:

You can almost hear the madness, or at least Schubert's comprehension of his dramatic mood swings.

Cheers, AdZz -- for the great contribution and your much too kind words! :D

Here's Barbara Bonney and Gösta Winbergh under Ferro in the duet Chiedi all'aura lusinghiera from Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore --

A sheer joy to the ears. Reading the youtube description, it says discovered 2005...makes you wonder/sad how much music was lost through the centuries.

The magnificent Kerstin Thorborg!

As Erda in Rheingold --

Her Alles was ist, endet! [2:39] is out of this world.

As Brangäne; Einsam wachend... --

As Ortrud; Fahr heim... --

Franz Liszt is 200 years old today

long live (it will)

Songs for the worst day.

Ewigkeit schwingt über ihnen Kreise,
Bricht die Sense des Saturns entzwei.

ETA: And of course --

Ach! möchte mich von meines Leibes Ketten
Der Herr erretten;
Ach! wäre doch mein Abschied hier...

I'm going to start going through this thread. Time to broaden my horizons past film fare i've enjoyed and it looks like Waltraute will be my teacher. Mockneys already posted Fantasia on a theme, and I'll throw in some other hollywood tropes of recent years i've enjoyed.

lark ascending

whisper of a thrill

Don't know if Eno could ever be considered as classical but what the hell

Right to page 1 I go and the journey begins.

Well Pilloriy's first post in this thread almost ended it straight away.

Cheers! :D
Hearing that makes me so happy, and I hope I won't disappoint.

Poem & translation --

Bedecke deinen Himmel, Zeus,
Mit Wolkendunst!
Und übe, Knaben gleich,
Der Diesteln köpft,
An Eichen dich und Bergeshöhn!
Mußt mir meine Erde
Doch lassen stehn,
Und meine Hütte,
Die du nicht gebaut,
Und meinen Herd,
Um dessen Glut
Du mich beneidest.

Ich kenne nichts Ärmer's
Unter der Sonn' als euch Götter.
Ihr nähret kümmerlich
Von Opfersteuern
Und Gebetshauch
Eure Majestät
Und darbtet, wären
Nicht Kinder und Bettler
Hoffnungsvolle Toren.

Da ich ein Kind war,
Nicht wußt', wo aus, wo ein,
Kehrte mein verirrtes Aug'
Zur Sonne, als wenn drüber wär'
Ein Ohr, zu hören meine Klage,
Ein Herz wie meins,
Sich des Bedrängten zu erbarmen.

Wer half mir wider
Der Titanen Übermut?
Wer rettete vom Tode mich,
Von Sklaverei?
Hast du's nicht alles selbst vollendet,
Heilig glühend Herz?
Und glühtest, jung und gut,
Betrogen, Rettungsdank
Dem Schlafenden dadroben?

Ich dich ehren? Wofür?
Hast du die Schmerzen gelindert
Je des Beladenen?
Hast du die Tränen gestillet
Je des Geängsteten?
Hat nicht mich zum Manne geschmiedet,—
Die allmächtige Zeit
Und das ewige Schicksal,
Meine Herren und deine?

Wähntest du etwa,
Ich sollte das Leben hassen,
In Wüsten fliehn,
Weil nicht alle Knabenmorgen-
Blütenträume reiften?

Hier sitz' ich, forme Menschen
Nach meinem Bilde,
Ein Geschlecht, das mir gleich sei,
Zu leiden, weinen,
Genießen und zu freuen sich,
Und dein nicht zu achten,
Wie ich.

----------------

Cover your heaven, Zeus,
With foggy clouds,
And try yourselve, like a boy
Who beheads thistles,
On oak-trees and mountain-tops;
You still must leave
my Earth to me,
And my hut, which you did not build,
And my stove,
Whose glow
You envy me.

I know no poorer creatures
Under the sun, than you, Gods!
You barely sustain yourself
From sacrificial offerings
And exhalated prayers
Your Majesty
And would wither, were
Not children and beggars
Hopeful fools.

When I was a child,
And did not know where from or to,
I turned my seeking eye toward
The sun, as if beyond there was
An ear to hear my complaint,
A heart like mine,
To have mercy with the embattled one.

Who helped me
Against the Titans' might?
Who saved me from Death,
From Slavery?
Did you not accomplish it all yourself,
Holy glowing Heart?
And glowed, young and good,
Deceived, thanks for salvation
To the sleeping one up there?

Shall I honour you? What for?
Have you softened the pains,
Ever, of a burdened one?
Have you silenced the tears,
Ever, of an anguished one?
Was I not forged into a Man
By almighty Time
And eternal Fate,
My masters and yours?

Do you imagine
I should hate life,
Flee to the desert,
Because not every
Flowering dream bloomed?

Here I sit, forming humans
In my image;
A people to be like me,
To suffer, to weep,
To enjoy and to delight themselves,
And to not attend to you –
As I.
