Music Mockney's Classical Music Thread

Have a feeling I may have posted this before, apologies if so.
Borodin's string quartet no.2:

Haendel playing Sibelius' violin concerto:

in keeping with the current weather, tchaikovsky's october & november

first time i'd seen this, the end of scriabin's prometheus with an attempt at the light show

the introit from schnittke's requiem

& i can't stop listening to this kronos quartet arrangement of schnittke's concerto for mixed chorus. from 5.09 is something else.

Cheers! Great posts, Love & Skywarden! :D

With this one you should watch, not just listen --

It's like those 'fan videos' people make for eg Rafa , only genuinely beautiful.

Waltraute, what's your favourite three or five pieces of downbeat and melancholic classical music?
That's so hard to say, but I'll post 5 pieces I've listened to today after I got the news Sir Alex retired.

Allan Pettersson - Symphony No. 7

Purcell - Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary - March

Wagner - Siegfried's Funeral March from Götterdämmerung

Händel - Ombra Mai Fu

Schubert/Müller - Die Nebensonnen

Ach, meine Sonnen seid ihr nicht!
Schaut ander'n doch ins Angesicht!

Wagner - Götterdämmerung - Waltraute's narrative

Der Götter Rat
liess er berufen;
den Hochsitz nahm
heilig er ein;
ihm zu Seiten
hiess er die Bangen sich setzen,
in Ring und Reih'
die Hall' erfüllen die Helden.

Schubert/Goethe - Prometheus

Wähntest du etwa,
Ich sollte das Leben hassen,
In Wüsten fliehen,
Weil nicht alle
Blütenträume reiften?

Wagner wrote you a song? Not bad!

Do anyone know what that little Waldteufel piece in Smultronstället is? I've been looking for it for years and years.

I'm gonna get into all your suggestions when I've some time. Cheers!!

And sorry about that Waldteufel piece from Smultronstället, I can't identify it, although I adore the film. :(

Some Stockholm Bluebeard's (audio only) --

First time hearing Pettersson, sounds great upon first listen, cheers. And thanks for the recent use of spoilers, can make such a difference (says he, now killing the thread with a large, random dump of videos).

Brahms - Ein deutsches Requiem - II. Denn alles Fleisch es ist wie Gras

And a repost of Waltraute's from earlier in the thread: III. Herr, lehre doch mich:

Louis Spohr - Violin Concerto No. 8

Lutosławski - Funeral Music for Strings - I. Prologue

Anton Arensky - Piano Trio No. 1 - III. Elegia

Jules Massenet - Élégie

Zara Dolukhanova singing Stabat Mater

Natalie Dessay singing Alyabyev's The Nightingale

Georgy Sviridov - The Blizzard - I. Troika

Sviridov - Pathetic Oratorio - VII. The Sun and the Poet

Sviridov - Night Clouds (Choral Cantata) - I. Night Clouds

Valery Gavrilin - Evening Music (from Chimes)

Probably not the thread for it but as it was stuck in my head for ages, I have to inflict it on others. I came across this clip from the ballet, Anyuta, while searching for Valery Gavrilin's music. I dislike the music but the scene (and all the close-ups of quirky facial expressions!) became permanently lodged in my brain until I ended up having to watch the whole thing. I do like the Waltz he wrote for it & there's a nice clip of Maximova dancing it with Vasiliev in their 50's according to the dates (I can't believe she's in her 40's in the film):
Valery Gavrilin - Tarantella & Grand Waltz

& Sviridov's Time, Forward! in Guy Maddin's short film, The Heart of the World

Back from Bayreuth! :D
Still buzzing! :wenger:

I'll post something relevant as soon as I can calm down a bit, I promise.
And cheers for that absolutely epic (not in the scouser-in-love-with-Rafa sense) post, Love. <3

For Swedish Caftards, heaven awaits!
22th May Birthday concert; Christian Thielemann; Bayreuth Festival Orchestra (Those brilliant musicians! Like Dessie, Scholes, and Sir Alex rolled into one (or rather several-)!)

I'll get it to the rest of you lot come hell or high water, though.

Wow, brilliant stuff. Did you visit the Liszt mausoleum?

Cheers for your kind words, but -- Oh, no! Sadly not. It was like every minute of every day was filled with (wonderful) stuff, and we sadly didn't have time. :(
We were so down about it, and soon we'll be back to show our true respect to the incomparable Liszt, I just know it.

So happy to hear from you, super-bass-nani, though! <3
And now I have to sleep! Here's another great Thielemann Meistersinger vorspiel while I'm at it --
