Moby/Gio vs Skizzo - Tactical Draft

Who created a better environment for their star player to shine?

I feel that where he played in 1982 award winning season.
He didn't win (2nd) and I don't see how that means he needs Platini next to him.

It's like saying Suárez (a worthy Ballon d'Or candidate last year) needs Messi next to him. Who was Messi at Liverpool? And for Uruguay?

Shame these two teams meet in the first round as they are two well constructed sides around their key players. I really like the use of Eder here who would love the space created in this setup.
That was certainly one of the rationales behind selecting Eder. He really excelled at expanding the width of the attack. For Brazil, he pulled left which allowed Socrates and Zico space through the middle. We can see the same dynamic here with Eder and Giresse. It's not just about Eder pulling wide to create space for Giresse, but the Frenchman's slick and accurate service into feet to unleash that wand of a left foot.

Another reason for the Eder pick was because he complements Camacho in a lot of ways. Camacho was gritty, resolute and defensively watertight, whereas Eder was more of a maverick. Not many could retain their threat when going from in-to-out in the way he did. His left peg is one of the greatest of all time and it basically allowed him to be as threatening from 25-30 yards out on the left hand side of the park as most others would be from 15-20 yards away from goal. Together we thought Camacho and Eder provide a very balanced left side.

Very good sides, little to separate and not much to say in terms of critique.

I like Rivera in that classic #10 position with 2 outside wingers and RvP ahead. Nice to see Giresse also having a team build around him rather than being again the second fiddle to another playmaker.

Both teams are well set up at the moment I have a slight preference to Skizzo's

To expand on the idea behind the selection of Rep and Eder, it was to exploit Giresse's passing range. The profile below highlights his remarkable ball-striking ability with passes over 40m in range. And so it was important to have targets to stretch the space and get on the end of that kind of service.

My own view of things is that tactically we're fairly similar and both well set up. Where we might then have an advantage is in the relative quality of our midfield trios. Voronin and Tardelli are as good as it gets in this pool and provide a hell of a dominating platform for Giresse to perform. The defences are both solid and you can see some similarity in the quality of Camacho/Bossis and Blanc/Tresor. The main difference at the back for me though is in the presence of Karl-Heinz Forster who is one of the greatest man-marking central defenders of all time. As well as offering that top-end quality, he provides a really natural partnership with Blanc and you can see how Blanc could shine alongside him in the same way he did for France next to Desailly.

With Voronin/Tardelli and Forster/Blanc, I believe we have a really strong and physically imposing spine that would get the best out of Giresse. There are a lot of similarities between the strength of that spine and the strength-through-the-centre approach employed by both Bordeaux and France in the 1980s, with Giresse then dropping into pockets of space and linking the whole attack together.

Gotta consider Lato and Gadocha for specific pairings.

They were my first two picks for exactly that reason. They had a bit of a golden period between the Olympics and World Cup, and it was down to these two, and of course, Deyna. Having these two playing their game alongside a classic style AM in Rivera would bring out the best in them, as well as bring out the best in Rivera in having a winger to stretch the play, and one to offer those penetrative runs in behind for him to find with his incisive passing. Those two are a key part of how Rivera would thrive.

Cheers for the comments :)

A compilation of all of Giresse's assists and goals for the national team:

Some specific highlights:

1.00 - 40-yard diagonal behind the defence for Soler to net against England in 1982 - can see Eder/Aguero enjoying this type of ball
1.40 - assist inbetween LB and CB to slip in Platini v Kuwait - the same space Rep would like to attack
5.40 - great goal from the edge of the box in the no10 position against West Germany in '82 semi - the sort of position he'd get into here with Eder squaring it up
11.30 - the sort of set-piece delivery that Blanc and Forster would love to attack
12.40 - another excellent diagonal in behind the RB - can see Aguero and Eder relishing that sort of ball
14.40 - perfectly timed through ball for a midfield runner

Congrats @Skizzo !
Sorry @Gio :( .

It was a great effort and a shame you met a side like Skizzo's this early.

I actually struggle to see how he can "reinforce" bar quality increments here and there. He's got Milan 69 spot on while also picking clones that thrived playing with #10s which ran the show. Flawless.

I think @Gio and @Moby can definitely rejoice in getting everyone to take notice of Giresse's true worth.

Frankly, I'm not sure the tournament format is going to be much fun to progress through, the objective was portraying a given oft-overlooked player properly and they certainly managed it in this one game.

That's actually my biggest concern :nervous:

Although at least next game I'll properly capitalize player names, so that should help

Perhaps if something like this was in the voting criteria.. I voted Skizzo because the specific pairing of Lato and Gadocha was better for me.

I agree though. Making an otherwise right-hand man the go-to guy is one of the best things about a tactical draft. Kudos to @Moby @Gio !

Cheers mate. You guys were probably one of a handful of teams I'd have rather avoided, both for your line up and the moby/gio combination.

You certainly didn't deserve a first round exit.

Cheers, fellas. Definitely could have given a lot more time but the fundamentals that were discussed on his quality outside of the well known magic square should be enough of a start for getting him a better reception in future, though it will be a challenge on the account of the position he occupies and the insane quality in it. Was a very enjoyable challenge and perhaps more of a presentation than a tournament, this one. Good idea, @Šjor Bepo and some excellent insights and discussions all around.

You would be surprised at how criminally underrated Rivera is. And yes, that Gadocha/Lato pairing is superb, both as a pair and in Rivera's context.

Great team @Skizzo. Love the Gadocha/Lato/Rivera triumvirate - no room for improvement there.

Enjoyed getting stuck into Giresse, he was really at the heart of so much that was good about that France midfield.

I expect Giresse to be making a lot more draft appearances in the future, and you two will be getting a few notifications from people quoting your posts here. Great stuff

cheers @Moby , tough luck with drawing skizzo....both teams deserved to go through.

:( Found it too close to vote, but deep down rooted for Giresse

Good game @Skizzo

Commiserations @Moby @Gio . I have a lot of time for Giresse and it was great to see you guys building around him and utilising the Bordeaux version which was informational and as anto said, brought better exposure to his talismanic abilities.

I was edging towards you guys initially but refrained from voting as there was nothing much in it, with Skizzo having a cracking side too. Came close to voting on the account of Voronin and that defensive duo though but really couldn't split either sides here.
