MLB 2025

All of that might very well be true, but it still whitewashes that the Dodgers are spending at least 70 million more this year than any other team. If this is a one time thing and their payroll comes down next year than so be it, I'll hold my hands up and say I am wrong, but if 2026 rolls around and they are adding someone like Vlad on a massive contract (with deferred money of course) would you not agree that things are not starting to tip? Hell, I'm not convinced they won't add Bregman in the next week. I know this all comes off as a Giants fan being jealous, and part of it is I guess, but most of my angst is around the massive financial disparity in the sport. The Dodgers actual payroll (corrected for the absurd deferments) is ~300 million more than 7 other team. That is not a sustainable model for a league.
You're right about the deferment thing, I can see MLB banning or adding in some restrictions on it, the Dodger's are abusing the system and essentially are betting on the salary cap rising so that when they do have to pay the deferrred salary it will fit in the increaed cap thus having little real impact

I can actually see the MLBPA stepping in on this. I saw somewhere that, based on an average return on investment on income gained over time, Soto's contacts is worth 300 million more than Ohtani's because the hedge fund worth 200+ billion is going to get to keep Ohtanis salary for the next decade and reap the investment income while Soto is getting all his money in real time.

Ohtani's contract is only worth 460m in present value. The reason for this is due to no team being in a bidding war for him. He simply gave all finalists the same contract offer, which they all agreed to (who wouldn't it, it's cheap). He ended up choosing the Dodgers. Whoever he picked, would have ended up having the most money deferred. A common complaint is that only the Dodgers could afford to defer the money, and that is simply not true. Deferred money benefits the team more than the player (monetarily). Ohtani only did it because he gets $70m in endorsements every year. No other player gets that so they won't defer that much.

Although it does benefit the owner, I can see why the PA wouldn't accept it. It's less freedom for themselves. So there are 2 obstacles. Maybe politically will force the owners to ditch it? Like the tax avoidance can really harm the league's image.

Well sure, no one is going to defer $680 million, buy he is not the only player deferring a large chunk of their salary:

I while ago I saw a thing on social media and it was a note someone had on their phone with a record of the people in their life who they had loaned money to and never gotten back. One was in the thousands, a lot in the 100s. One guy, let’s call him Max, owed like $12, and all the comments were basically “do NOT put Max in the same category as someone you gave $10,000 to” The Turner number reminded me of that a bit here.

Dodgers spent another 13 million on Yates. Payroll, with penalties and even even with deferred money removed, is north of 500 million.

Steinbrenner Field is a few miles directly north of me, may have to check out a couple Rays games this summer. And hopefully this propels the ownership/new ownership to see that Tampa is the better venue for long-term health. If something can be worked with the county* for property, the north lot by Raymond James would be perfect for a domed stadium. Doesn't need to extravagant like NFL domes but could be a 35-45k seated venue, unless the Glazers/county want to partner for a multi-use domed stadium that could seat 75k+.

Then expand North Himes and W Tampa Bay Blvd for better traffic flow.

*Apparently, the county owns the parking lots/land not the Glazers, thank feck.

Trying to get into baseball not a huge fan though but decided I'll go for the mets as I watched a documentary about Dwight Gooden and Daryl Strawberry. Who doesn't root for talents who turn to cocaine?

Who does everything go for on here?

Giants.

Mets are a great choice if you enjoy misery and
Self loathing. :)

Seriously though, I was a kid during those years and Doc was proper terrifying.

I remember that 1985 Mets team. Lots of famous names besides Doc and Darryl:

Billy Bean: Moneyball guy
Larry Bowa and Ron Gardengire: future managers
Lenny Dykstra: pre-Phillies
Gary Carter: HoF
Keith Hernandez: Multi time all star, Elaine’s boyfriend, and Hair Club member

And so many other names from my childhood (Mookie, Darling, Orosco, Sid, HoJo, etc.)

Nationals. It's hard to say anything good about them right now but MacKenzie Gore got 13 strikeouts last night and that was nice.

You've picked an interesting time to follow the Mets as the NL East is going to be super competitive this year. Braves/Phillies/Mets are all in contention for the division.

Yankees just hit 3 home runs of the first 3 pitches in the bottom of the first. Insane stuff

I really wonder how long the MLB is gonna wait before they make a ruling on those bowling pin bats the Yankees are using.

Red Sox - first ever game I went to was at Fenway vs the Rangers, this was in 99, I knew who Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio were and that was about it!!

Why would the Rays need 35-45K? Every time I see them on TV the crowd looks to be 3.5-4.5K! When the Red Sox play there they usually outnumber the home fans!

They already stated that the bats are legal, seems that they were used last season as well by some players, it also appears that Judge isn't one of them!

They probably don't but that's the minimum range for all MLB parks, and I figure the city/county would use for other events. Also, location location location. And charm effect. The Trop has zero sporting charm and no one wants to drive to St Pete from most areas. Putting a stadium closer to Tampa proper and/or to the east of would draw more fans.

I played with a bowling pin bat in high school, a Japanese exchange student brought it with him. They have been popular in Japan for decades.

I know what they've stated. I'm waiting on them to change their minds.

If the Yanks are nearing the MLB season record by game 80 there will be a decision made.

I'm slightly joking above as things tend to even out but will be interesting to see if they keep this pace. Highly doubtful they'll keep swatting 5 per game but who knows. The record is 307 (shared) which is just under 1.90 per game.

The biggest concern would be that downtown STP would suffer by not having the Rays (downtown STP was far & away a better downtown destination than DT Tampa during my last stint in STP during the late 10's, no clue how they compare now).

But, it is common sense that the further east the stadium is, the more potential fa s they can capture.

The key is in the sports teams' named location - all the pro teams are called 'Tampa Bay' so as to be inclusionary for the entire bay area & also allow for potential moves within the area without changing names.

I gather no one really cares about the Rays in St Pete. Heck, they may not care about them in the greater Tampa area.

The Rays have balked on further Trop repairs indicating a new venue or feck off, imo. City/county is now seeking reimbursement from the Rays for repairs made to the Trop as there was apparent desire to fix the Trop until recent days. Milton seems to be the perfect cover/excuse for ownership to force a new venue location and/or sell the club and/or relocate elsewhere. I'd say there's a decent wager odds the Rays could be off to Charlotte, Nashville, Portland, somewhere in the next 3-5 years.

Yep, unfortunately you may be spot on as to the landing cities & time frame.

Some HoF musings on current players (I did cheat and check career WAR to get help on everyone not in the lock category:

Locks: Altuve, Verlander, Trout (although his counting stats are weirdly not tracking great.....), Betts, Ohtani, Kershaw, Schezer
Likely: Sale, Cole, Judge, Ramirez (sneaks up on yah), Harper, Machado, Arenado, Freeman.....4th in active WAR, above everyone but Trout, Betts and, Goldschmidt
Work to do: Soto, Lindor, Semien (this one threw me)

I know I missed some, thoughts?

Clayton Kershaw
Corey Seager
Jacob DeGrom

Dodgers and Padres a class above the rest of the field. Shame they're in the same division and can't meet in the World Series.
