MLB 2025

All of that might very well be true, but it still whitewashes that the Dodgers are spending at least 70 million more this year than any other team. If this is a one time thing and their payroll comes down next year than so be it, I'll hold my hands up and say I am wrong, but if 2026 rolls around and they are adding someone like Vlad on a massive contract (with deferred money of course) would you not agree that things are not starting to tip? Hell, I'm not convinced they won't add Bregman in the next week. I know this all comes off as a Giants fan being jealous, and part of it is I guess, but most of my angst is around the massive financial disparity in the sport. The Dodgers actual payroll (corrected for the absurd deferments) is ~300 million more than 7 other team. That is not a sustainable model for a league.
You're right about the deferment thing, I can see MLB banning or adding in some restrictions on it, the Dodger's are abusing the system and essentially are betting on the salary cap rising so that when they do have to pay the deferrred salary it will fit in the increaed cap thus having little real impact

I can actually see the MLBPA stepping in on this. I saw somewhere that, based on an average return on investment on income gained over time, Soto's contacts is worth 300 million more than Ohtani's because the hedge fund worth 200+ billion is going to get to keep Ohtanis salary for the next decade and reap the investment income while Soto is getting all his money in real time.

Ohtani's contract is only worth 460m in present value. The reason for this is due to no team being in a bidding war for him. He simply gave all finalists the same contract offer, which they all agreed to (who wouldn't it, it's cheap). He ended up choosing the Dodgers. Whoever he picked, would have ended up having the most money deferred. A common complaint is that only the Dodgers could afford to defer the money, and that is simply not true. Deferred money benefits the team more than the player (monetarily). Ohtani only did it because he gets $70m in endorsements every year. No other player gets that so they won't defer that much.

Although it does benefit the owner, I can see why the PA wouldn't accept it. It's less freedom for themselves. So there are 2 obstacles. Maybe politically will force the owners to ditch it? Like the tax avoidance can really harm the league's image.

Well sure, no one is going to defer $680 million, buy he is not the only player deferring a large chunk of their salary:

I while ago I saw a thing on social media and it was a note someone had on their phone with a record of the people in their life who they had loaned money to and never gotten back. One was in the thousands, a lot in the 100s. One guy, let’s call him Max, owed like $12, and all the comments were basically “do NOT put Max in the same category as someone you gave $10,000 to” The Turner number reminded me of that a bit here.
