MLB 2022

Not ideal but it's sport. Lot of this stuff goes on.

Find me another example of a player being drafted and then not even receiving an offer. Players have held out, teams have offered lower amounts, but at least there were attempts made. The Mets agreed to a bonus but then yanked it and never offered anything.

Gotcha. Threw me a curveball there.

And you’re right, he’s a racist cnut. Embarrassed the hell out of me as a 90s Braves’ fan.

No worries. I loved those braves teams and would stay up to watch them on TBS, especially when Maddox or Glavine was starting.

Yep. Good debate this.

Ranking the top 3 pitchers in each rotation by their peak performance I would go:

1.Koufax
2.Gooden
3.Maddux
4.Smoltz
5.Drysdale
6.Glavine
7.Sutton
8.Cone
9.Fernandez

Obviously I did not see those 60’s Dodgers teams play and I was 10 for the 88 Mets, but I’ve watched a lot of clips of Koufax and Gooden and they were a level above. Unfortunately for both that peak was really short.

Kumar Rocker is a top name, too. Maybe a reflection of the melting pot and/or madcap nature of the country, but you Americans have such a high tolerance for daft/brilliant names it's like you don't notice them.

Over in Blighty and it'll still probably take us a while to get over Ten Hag (it's like the number innit?) - whereas in the US you can be Barkevious Mingo, Jackrabbit Jenkins or Stalin Castro and nobody bats an eye.

Absolutely. Here are some fun ones. #1 will blow your mind.

Those Mets teams used to sometimes train at this field in the spring…

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huggins-Stengel_Field

I grew up so close to the field that we could hear the crack of the fungo, about three hundred yards away. A good friend of the family (Barry Lyons) was in their farm system at AAA Tidewater (got brought up first in 1986), so he got my mom & me around the chain link fence (!!!) to get on the field & meet the guys. I had practically all the 86 Mets’ autographs on one piece of paper, but inadvertently threw it away. It would probably be worth a decent sum today.

Thinking of those 86 Mets led me down an amazing rabbit hole. 16 guys who played for the Mets are in the HoF, but only 2 of them have a Mets cap on their head on the plaque. One is super obvious, but the other surprised me a it. Can anyone get one/both without cheating?

Gooden-Darling-Ojeda-Fernandez in 86

Same above with Cone in 88 but lost to the Dodgers.

84-85 Gooden (when he was 19 an 20!!!!!!!!!!!!!) was just absurd, especially 85:

W-L: 24-4
ERA: 1.53
K's 268
CG: 16(16!!!!! and 8 SO's!!!)
Age: 20

Doc fascinated me when I was younger and I have often wondered what his career could have been. This are his stats through his age 28 season:

W-L154-81
ERA
3.04
G
298
K
1835
WAR
42.4

Here are some comps (through age 28 season):

MadduxSeaverPedro
W-L131-91135-76125-56
ERA
2.85
2.38
2.68
G
273
251
278
K
1134
1655
1818
WAR
40.9
51.8
52.2

All are HoF-ers and he was right there with them.....then the cocaine caught up. Doc was likely pitching his first 8 years while using so who knows how much better he could have been. We do know how the drugs and injuries (almost certainly linked) destroyed the back half of his career.

Looks a bit different then as a rookie

Toronto Argonauts Blue Jays are up by 22 runs in the 6th inning against Boston. 25 to 3. More runs than outs committed at this point in the game. Still on break they are. Wow

Yankees pitching has gone to the Dogs. Aaron judge is magnificent though

Bill Simmons was crying about how Bad the Red Sox are yesterday & their ownership not caring and now this happens. This is going to be fun

That Boston Toronto game

That fielding was abhorrent, they looked drunk! The final scored looked more like an NFL game tbh.

I honestly think the pitchers were pulled from the crowd.

The lack of response to my Doc Gooden post dates the baseball fandom everyone in this thread. Anyone who was aware of life in the late 80’s and early 90’s would have Doc burned in their brain.

Karma hit quick
We basically knew that he was done for the season with his hip injury. He has a $13 million option for next year v. a $2 million buyout. Knowing how the Rays operate, it’s possible he gets bought out. He wants to stay desperately.

My Giants just got bent over by the Dodgers. I really hope management is realistic and throws in the towel. Rondon, Belt, Peterson, Flores, etc. could bring back a semi-transformational prospect haul and lord know this old as shit team could use it.

Just had a Moneyball clip pop up in my YouTube thread. Now I have to watch it again. Great flick.

I know. I just wanted to get a dig in at you for enjoying my Sox falling apart
