Missed Opportunity Signings

Was thinking about this earlier and how United have at points missed out on I think very gettable targets who could really have helped transformed the current shape of the squad. All of these are from this season as I didn't want to go too far back.

I'm keen to see what suggestions others might have as to who they think United should have signed recently and have missed the boat on?

Now I don't know exactly how gettable all these were as we don't know the ins-and-outs of the deals, but on the face of it I think they all would have had difficulty turning down a move to Old Trafford at the time if it had presented itself.

There is also the elephant in the room that this would have resulted in extra spending and the question of whether the Glazers would have green-lighted any of this, but we also have to consider that A) extra players could have been moved on to part-fund (for example with some of my picks, both Henderson and Dalot could probably have been shifted) and B) this would result in a reduced need to blow vast amounts of money in this summers window (again using my picks as an example, I think you could probably get away with going after Akanji and Nunez and be in pretty good shape for the 2022/23 season).

Anyway, here are my picks and apologies if this thread gets anybody down thinking about what could have been. Was more just interested to see who people would have liked United to have signed, not intending to make anybody more depressed than they probably already are!

  • Mike Maignan, GK, Lille (£13m)

Was super impressive at Lille and looked to have it all. Not only a very good shot stopper, but modern keeper who can sweep off his line and is comfortable with the ball at his feet. Thought Milan got a bargain replacing Donnarumma with him and lo and behold he's arguably the best keeper in Serie A after one season.

Arguably a top 8 keeper in the world who would fit every system, and if United were a bit bolder in their evaluation of their current keepers and came to the probably logical conclusion a bit earlier that neither De Gea or Henderson are what they're looking for, they might have been able to solve this position for the next 6 or 7 years for next to nothing.

  • Kieran Trippier, RB, Atletico Madrid (£12m)

He was obviously heavily linked at a point when it seemed Atletico wanted 3 times the price for him. When it became evident he was available in January for a cut-price amount, I'm not sure why United weren't in for him. Or maybe they were and he wanted to be a building block at Newcastle, but I have to believe a starting spot at Old Trafford was on the cards he would have gone for that instead.

Obviously not a long-term deal, but a superb and affordable fix for the RB spot (along with added set-piece value) for the next 2-3 seasons. Even if you think you can continue to develop either Wan-Bissaka or Dalot as the long-term starter (which I don't and I think most United fans would agree) he's not necessarily going to block their path for too long.

  • Rodrigo Bentancur, CM, Juventus (£15.8m initial fee with £5.7m potential add-ons)

  • Dejan Kulusevski, RW, Juventus (£8.3m loan with £29.2m option to buy)

I've combined these together as this felt like a package deal. I wasn't too sure about either of these when they arrived, but for the initial outlay I think this was more than worth a stab particularly when you consider they both fill positions of need. Neither may be a long-term fix (especially Bentancur) but for less than £25m initially you are upgrading 2 positions of dire need half way through a faltering season.

  • Bruno Guimaraes, CM, Lyon (£33.5m)

Early days yet but I think this guy will be a star. The technical ability always stood out from when he joined Lyon but he also showed a tenacity that has seen him adapt very quickly to the PL and become an instant cult hero on Tyneside. Added goals to his game too and his passion and desire would probably have helped kickstart United in the 2nd half of the season.

*Fees are just from figures I found quickly reported on the internet from fairly reputable sources like Sky Sports.

Hojbjerg to Spurs for 25m is the one that always pisses me off. Would’ve solved our defensive mid problems for an absolute snip. He isn’t a world beater but a competent player in a position of need for 25m would’ve been amazing.

Dumfries for 15 million. I honestly think he could have carried Ole during his 5 at the back phase.

Not the most graceful player out there by any stretch, but that guy is not human.
It's not like he was a hidden gem either. He was Holland's best player during the Euros.

Can we still sign kulusevski?
Mandatory buy clause I'm afraid.

Trippier, Kulusevski, and some others aren't good enough. Players we missed out on are Fabinho, Thiago, Kroos, and Hazard.

Sadio Mane

The suggestion was laughed at on here when it was reported that LVG wanted him badly yet who's laughing now...

According to LVG the Club told him Mane was not a big enough name for Utd , Commercial club.

You say this but had we signed them they’d inevitably have turned to shite as well. It’s been a terrible environment to work in these last few years.

In hindsight every player that moves to another club and does well is a missed signing. But in reality there’s no guarantee they would have done well if they signed for us.

But here goes:
Fabinho CDM
Mahrez RW
Either of Dias / Laporte / Konde CB
The striker City signed in January, who we were linked with, is also one we’ll probably regret not signing.

It’s a long time ago now but why did we never raid Spurs for Luka Modric?
Fergie had a boner for him for years tbf, Levy would never budge and sell him to us though which is why he ended up in Madrid.

Modric even wanted to join in 2011 but Fergie and Gill had zero faith that they'd be able to work anything out with Levy.

Same for Gareth Bale when he broke through and was in demand.

Modric has even looked back at Uniteds interest at the time and said it was a great source of pride during his time in Madrid

If you guys signed Kante when he left Leicester, things could have been really different. It would have eased both Mourinho and Pogba's introductions.

Thiago was almost signed with United during David’s era. Although he was a bit of injury prone and sometimes inconsistency and too risky in passing patterns. I could say that if he was signed at United, he could probably have a chance of being the best central midfielders after a farewell of Scholes.

When he is on form, he’s a world class player for sure.

Fabinho is the big one for me. He basically put out a "come and get me" sign with his comments about wanting to play for us, and this was at a time when we badly needed both a CDM and a right back, both of which he had extensive experience in. Years later, those positions STILL haven't been filled.

EDIT: Also maybe Haaland as a youngster straight from Molde before he joined Salzburg. Surely Ole as his manager at the time had put in a recommendation.

Fairly sure we just signed Martial instead or am I dreaming?
We signed him on deadline day iirc, much of the transfer talk for the new forward centered around Mane once RVP and Falcao left.

He would've most likely been cheaper too coming from Soton

Apparently Mane didn't want to play under Van Gaal. And I bet Robben never came for similar reasons. A lot of players thought he was a bit of a twat.

Of course he says that now he is at Liverpool. Do you honestly believe he was going to turn down United with the massive pay rise because he didn’t like the manager?

Everyone always says they rejected United after the event. Some of them might have done if they had a choice of clubs but he didn’t that summer and stayed at Southampton on a very low wage. There is no way he turned us down.

And Robben was never going to come to United from Bayern where he had a nice life and was close to retiring.

He played happily under LvG at Bayern.

There’s a tonne. Vidal in his pomp sticks out though - we were lacking that tenacity at the time and we watched him leave Leverkusen for 6m euros. Just shows that even when we weren’t a mess we still missed out on these shrewd signings.

I remember when the prospect of signing Van Dijk from Celtic was thrown up the flag pole. The caf in its wisdom decided he wasn’t up to it.

Mane, van Dijk, Dumfries, Vidal, Sneijder.

Always felt we should have signed Dembele from Fulham before he went to Spurs. I remember him dominating a game against us in CM when we were crying out for a new midfielder.

We were linked to Kevin De Bruyne at one point, but ended up with Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger that summer instead

Schneiderlin was a good signing at the time. Spurs wanted him and he had been one of Southampton’s best players. He was exactly what we needed and the signing was praised by fans, media and opposition fans. The fact he turned out to be awful couldn’t have been predicted and we got most of our money back for him after what one season? Hardly the stuff of nightmares. It’s the signings like AWB and Sanchez that have really hampered us.
