France defender Mickaël Silvestre could be persuaded to leave Manchester United if a major club offered him the centre back spot.

Silvestre plays there for France, but United supremo Sir Alex Ferguson prefers to use him at left back.

"I want to stay at Manchester of course," said Silvestre during a break in training with the France World Cup squad. "But I am convinced that if a big club like Manchester was offering me the chance to play at my favourite position, I would seriously think about leaving."

The 24-year-old high-flyer, at Old Trafford since 1999, says it is the only persistent shadow over his life in Manchester.

But he insisted that although he much preferred the central position, he will always give of his best wherever he plays.

"I am taking it well now," he said, "but at the start it was hard to cope with.

"However, my role I guess at the moment is to show that I am capable of playing at both positions. I've got used to it."

Does anyone think Fergie may switch Micky to CB in the near future? I doubt it because this last season would have been the perfect time to do it, having him play alongside Larry.

Maybe the above comments might alert Fergie into buying a LB as well this summer!!!

although there are pple praising him as the most improved player of the season.. i still get the gitters with micky sometimes. Let's put it this way... he's definitely not in the mould of dennis irwin in his prime... if u get what i mean....

Well Ive said plenty of times I reckon Fergie will make a fresh bid for Lizarazu and be even more determind than last year.

No. Who'd have played left back all season? Neville and Irwin certainly not. If we buy a left back, perhaps Silvestre at CB is possible. I think he needs to play there actually - he's not a left back no matter what anybody says.

The back four could have easily been (when Wes & Ronny were injured) RB - Gazza, CB's - Larry + Micky & LB - Phizza instead of Gary going in the middle & Phizza on the right. Fergie didn't do that though, he put Gazza in the middle and Phil on the right and I'm assuming that's because he doesn't want Micky in the middle.

Maybe it's because of his attacking prowess down the left, who knows; fact is he could have put Micky in there but didn't and probably won't ever.

Just to be clear (cos initially I don't think I was!) - Micky will not IMO be played at left back as we have no better left back in reserve. Last season I would not have been comfortable with Denis or Phil at left back. Nor would I this coming season. Micky isn't a good enough left back in my eyes though. I think he could be a better CB. BUT we need a new left back in that case.

You say he wont, IYO, be played at LB because we have no better LB in reserve!

I assume you mean he wont be played at CB because of this....... Anyway, I agree if that's the case.

If and it's a big IF, we do get another LB like Lizarazu or Bridge, then it may happen that Micky moves to the middle but, I think Fergie would rather leave him at LB and buy a CB than buy a LB and move him into the middle.

Both our wing backs wants to play in middle but they cant. They are used to it.Maybe if Fergie buys a new wing back.

Jees I haven't even had that much either! Well, TTR your assumption was right. feck knows what I was writing earlier, let's say it was my dog or something.

Silvestre has come out with quite a few strange comments this season.
And if what he has said this time is correct and he's not 100 per cent committed to United - NO MATTER WHERE HE PLAYS IN THE TEAM - then he can go elsewhere for all I care.
Never once have I heard OGS come out with this sort of nonense - and he plays on the right, left, up front and on the bench.
I want the players to be proud to play for United. God knows I'd play anywhere for them!

Buying a full-back who can play on both sides would go a long way to resolving this "I wanna play in the middle" conflicts by silvestre and gary neville.

The goals that have come in from the left last season are a joke.Micky was in front of Lunberg for the Arsenal goal at Old Trafford.Fergi knows this and will correct it.Early in the season Micky said he was being made the scapegoat for the poor results and rightly so.

Micky's best position is LB imo, but I have not seen enough of him at CB, apart from a few games for France, to comment in his 'favoured position'. He has given us something we haven't always had down the left, and that is the ability to support Giggs. He has had a great season, and set-up many a goal, but if he isn't happy, he isn't much use to us. I hope he stays on the left, he has been the most improved player this season, and he has potential. SAF will do what's right.

No offense, but Mickey ain't that good. He's pretty good at going forward, but he's crap at defending. Everytime when the opponent goes near Silvestre (or Brown) I get nervous... Silvestre and Brown are both players that are on an "a blunder a match" ratio...

to be fair to Mickey, he has had more good games than bad ones this season. Definately improved.
Whether Fergie sees it like that or not who knows. 1 thing though, Mickey needs to learn to keep his gob shut and watch what he says to press. Fergie wont be impressed.

He is an even bigger liability at CB than he is at LB. Great going forward but positionally naive in defense with poor concentration.

Lets hope he has a good world cup so somebody bids 15 milion quid for him.

Feckin hell...

What's he going to? End up top scorer?

;)

all he has to do is score the winning goal in the final. ;)

According to 'uwsonline.com' he's about to agree a new contract after being persuaded by SAF that left back is his best position... not sure how reliable they are for news though...

he and Blanc played very well against leverkusen. I think Silvestre would be a better player at CB because he's fast, good in the air, and strong, he needs to improve his concentration though. The only reason SAF plays him on the left is because we don't have any good LB's.

No, I think Fergie identified him as a better LB than CB. Just see his characteristics: fast, very mobile, good going forward, not tall, average heading, not very strong, occasional lack of concentration.... all these add up to ==> he is a LB.

I get the impression a lot of the french players are starting to think they are invincible and that they can command what ever they like.....whether it be wages, positions, transfers.......

"fast, very mobile, good going forward" --- probably a good LB/Wing Back.

"not tall, average heading, not very strong, occasional lack of concentration...." --- probably he can't be a good defender in both full-back/center-back.

To add up, he is the most improved player this season, but still, he hasn't grow up as the defender we needed yet.

Welcome HKchor. HK is rainly in these few days but I hope the whether will turn good next week so that we can watch a nice tourament on next Thursday. :)

Back to Silverstre, I think his concentration and strong in tackling are the most improved points of him this season. But his height, his body build and his ability in the air are the major reason why it's a risk to make him a CB.

If silvestre was quoted accurately i think he should leave (will never hear comments like that from G. neville, a true red and team player).

Time to correct what i feel was a mistake and get back Higginbotham

I agree selling Higginbotham is a mistake. But if we are really going to sign a new LB now, Wayne Bridge is a better choice.

Hi uranushk1, will u go to see the tourament on Thur? I hope the weather will be good too as i decide to go to the tournament ^^

About Micky,

LB:
The biggest problem for Micky is about concentration and consistency. Yes, he has improved in these area, it's still a long way for him to reach the same level of Irwin or other 1st class full-back.

CB:
There're both pros & cons for Micky as a CB, he might do better. however, he's not the only choice for a long term CB replacement in Man Utd. IMO, Brown/O'Shea both have more potential to be a First Class CB.

;)

If Silvestre wants to pick the team, he can buy a subbeteo set.

He's a decent fullback, and he should count himself lucky that SAF has helped turn him into that. I don't think SAF will take too kindly to his comments and rightly so.

Too true... Roy Keane has earned respect and right to speak out out team matters - with his manager's blessing. Silvestre seems to shout his mouth off quite a lot . But what has he done to earn that right? Methinks he needs to be careful.

Yes, I will also go to see the matches. Hope I can see Michael Stewart play! :)

Silvestre will not leave Utd. He is a great LB and everyone knows that. However, he makes too many errors and no large club will offer him the role of a CB...if they do..they'd have to pay a fair amount for him.

I`d be happier if Mickey shut his pie hole and got on with the job of self-improvement. He was plucked out of bench warming at an unstable Inter Milan to come to the greatest football club in the world.

Yet he insists on talking about his points of dissatsifaction again and again. He had better be careful.

He might get his wish and not be playing for Manchester United at left back - ever again.

He is a quality player lots of pace and determination ..Just needs to work on his concentration ..He has improved both seasons so far ..Here's to further improvement

We (I) have been giving the guy the benefit of the doubt for quite while now. He is good going forward and has improved in defense but he is still positionally poor and lacks concentration. To top it all he has complained to the press from time to time, culminating with the latest thinly veiled ad for his services as a CB. Enough is enough.

This sums up may feelings on the matter

He obviously isn't dedicated to United and it shows in his performances (unless he just naturally has the attention span of a Goldfish). Hopefully he will play CB for a victorious French WC team so we can offload him for serious dosh. Don't let the door slap you on the arse on your way out Micky.
