Michy Batshuayi | Officially a Chelsea Player

Good move for Chelsea. I think he has the potential to be a very good player. His very similar to Morata actually, one of those very well rounded forwards with a very respectable goal scoring record when you consider just how abysmal Marseille were this season.

Ffs Chelsea dont half know how to close a deal, why is it that theyre able to make sensible competent descions whilst we take ages to sign players who nobody else is in for. Wouldve been a brilliant signing for us.

I first thought it must be usual United fan moaning about our transfer business. Tbf though, if serious competitors for a player are Palace and West Ham, it is not that difficult for a club like Chelsea to swoop in and land the player. It is another matter if they have scouted the player before and wanted him or if they are in for him because some other target of theirs (Morata?) looks difficult. Also for some clubs, just an initial interest in a player becomes a big news while others, even if big clubs, can expect to go about transfer business relatively quietly.

Yeah Chelsea do seem to have a habit of just quickly closing deals without much fanfare, tbf though if theyre going for Michy over Morata theyre still getting the better deal.

West Ham bid multiple times (apparently), Palace get a bid eventually accepted (more than West Ham would pay) and people seem to be shocked beyond belief that a bigger club would swoop.

Palace were being used to push a bid from a bigger team. You're all making out that Chelsea have done some kind of genius move whereas it's not exactly rocket science.

"Oh, now we know his market value. Troy Deeney is now worth £30m in this league so this seems like value. Let's do it..."

A lot of money for a backup player. But that's going to be standard now.

Not really. He may be a backup player next season (16/17) but they see him as a world class talent, surely.

There are still rumours Costa will leave. Or maybe Conte plans to use him as the second stiker in a 352.

I used to play Champ Manager/ Football Manager every year until 2012. (FM 13 put me off big time. Pile of shite)

When I played it, I'd have already heard of all these names when they got linked and have an idea of how highly rated they were

"Oh Tottenham are after Dos Santos?! Unbelievable, he scored 50 in a season for Arsenal in my save!!"

Now that I've stopped, I have absolutely no idea who these people are. I just see a big long confusing name, a big long confusing fee, and people saying said player is good

OK, you're going to have to talk me through this.

I get xG for a team - it shows how well the team has done, taking out the pretty random final element of actually sticking it in the net. Good indicator of how well a team is playing, as well as whether their finishing is good enough.

But for a player, in isolation what does it tell us? How good they are at getting into shooting positions? How greedy / optimistic they are? How good they are at choosing when to shoot? Or just how good the rest of their team are at creating chances?

This is what happens when you choose the red pill...

Do you honestly believe rumours about a fictional value attached to Troy Deeney convinced Chelsea to pay this fee?

With the pound slumping why don't we just adopt Troy Deeney as our new currency with the amount his name gets mentioned on here.

I've watched him week in week out these last years. Poor choice for Chelsea. I posted a lot about him in the Newbs.

At the base level, he is a selfish player that won't track back... he will always go for glory rather than play to teammates in better positions to score, and has an alarming lack of vision. Definitely *NOT* suited to a 2 striker system - this failed terribly when OM tried it for the end of the season. He'd do best as a lone striker, or at the middle of a front 3.

He has potential to be a good player and has pace, but nothing special, certainly not worth the money they'll pay. I've been resolutely unimpressed for a good few seasons.

I disagree
Think he will be a great signing for them.

Unbelievable if that money is true  I like Michy but there is no way he is worth that
He is a very wasteful, selfish and lazy player but without him Marseille would be relegated.

Good post. I had the exact same set of puzzled questions.

It seems like if two players make the same run into the box, but one has a teammate with good enough vision and passing ability to hit him in stride and the other doesn't, the first player will be rewarded with a higher xG for that sequence. And it also seems like if two players shoot from the same position, but one delivers an expert finish while the other clunks it 20 rows into the stands, they will get the same score.

Time will tell I guess, and it'll be fun to see what happens.

Every time I have seen him play he has struggled with having enough awareness of where his teammates are around him, and the ability to find them - he will shoot every time he is in front of goal, even if there is a much better option around him. He is that selfish, which is why he played best as a lone striker - mix him with Costa up front in the front 2 (as Conte seems to like), and you have potential powder keg!

He has had attitude problems from the start of his career, banned from the Belgium youth team for sneaking girls into the hotel etc - his attitude problems now manifest in getting *very* frustrated when things are going his way in a game. Up against very organised defenses such as those in the Premiership, he will struggle unless he can add a new facet to his game quickly. He really needs to mature quickly.

For me, he is a good striker - he has a good shot, decent pace, good in the air etc, so will always score goals. But a 40Million Euro striker? a 'great' striker? Nope.

You watch, he'll go on to score 50 goals next season now I've nailed my colours to the mast! :D

Didn't hear about him until a few weeks ago but it's a really interesting signing for Chelsea and it's a clever alternative to Lukaku who has a ridiculous price tag. Conte looks like he'll play 3-5-2 with him and Costa upfront and Hazard in behind.

IMO William was their best player last season.
Where do you think he would play in the 3-5-2 formation?

Well Willian has incredible workrate so him occupying one of the wingback positions seems standard but who knows. My thought process was that Willian and Azpilicueta would provide the width.

That's a good point. William has an incredible workrate so he could play as wingback. Also, it seems that Cuadrado is going to return. So they would have different options for the wing back position.

Could be a huge signing for Chelsea, he's no Rashford though let's be honest

Bit better than Palace for him then

As if he was going to go to Palace anyway, now lets hope they decide to spunk that 30m they've got on Benteke instead. That be nice.

£40m for another belgian striker who skipped the leg day.

Fantastic.
