Michael Edwards close to making return to LFC

Power struggle with Klopp. Klopp shadow and power was big than Edward's job description

Not True

Edward’s achieved everything he could in his position at that time

he wanted new challenges that were higher than his position at the time and those options weren’t on the table for him

Real Madrid offered him Sporting Director position, he just simply wasn’t interested in that role anymore

Liverpool have comprised a higher position ticking the boxes Edward’s required

simple as that really

What do you mean not true.

It has been reported he left because of Klopp and he's returning because Klopp is leaving.

It was also discussed here on Sunday , from minute 1:00

Ornstein tweeting he turned us down but he didn't put it in the article itself. Chucking our name in there for the interactions...

Looks like they're trying to go to a multi-club ownership model. Really despise the way football is going.

Classic Ornstein. The reality seems quite simple - in line with what posters are saying above about why he left Pool - his name would undoubtedly have come up but he wouldn't look at sporting director jobs so there's nowhere for him in the Ineos setup.

Was we even trying to get this guy or was we just used to make the scousers look more formidable than us.

That seems to be Edwards' plan. blergh.

Yeah, it's properly shit. I hate that it's the way we'll be going with the INEOS teams as well.

It's just depressing that a team like Palermo, that are probably the local religion in that part of Sicily, have 120 years of history and get 20k through the gates every week in Serie B are now just a feeder side for a completely soulless trophy purchasing operation. Let alone the conflict of interest issues when they're all potentially in the same European competition (like City and Girona easily could be next year) and the dodgy transfer dealings it opens up.

Exactly, I never get this power struggle talk. He was looking to move up, and also possibly because he felt he had taken Liverpool as far as he could and did not want to stick around for another rebuild. And while I understand the desire for continuity and to try and reproduce what had worked before, the chances of replicating that kind of success feels very slim.

It’s going to be sad when the Pool fans figure out that all they did was stumble upon a generational manager.

Far too much credit is given to FSG. They are coasting like the Glazers did with Ferguson. It is about to come crashing down and Edwards won’t make enough of a difference with their resources.

The main reason I am happy he returns is that Klopp turned everything to gold and with him gone we really do need the best we can get everywhere else to compensate. this seems like a move towards that.

Alonso would be another.

Liverpool have had Suarez/Coutinho level players before.
Klopp is the difference maker.

I agree, obviously I dont want it to work out, but it makes the most sense.

They are in for a shock when they see Gomez, Robertson, Endo, Gakpo, Darwin, Diaz etc under a “normal” manager. It’s going to be heartbreaking for them.

What else are you gonna do? Build one?

From my understanding the speculation around Edward’s struggle with Klopppower is simply not true and is as I’ve explained previously

I get my info from my brother who is high up in the footballing bubble as a Director, I’ll take his views opinions and insight over that of speculating presenters and ex players

Emm…never have one in the first place?

Their good decision was hiring Klopp in the first place. Any other manager wouldn’t have thrived given the restrictions on their resources.

A lot of these players will drop when he leaves and I suspect we will see what FSG are really like.

The fact is FSG were savvy enough to go for Klopp in the first place. So there is potential they could strike gold twice.

Would tend to agree. All American owners are shitty owners cuz in the American sports model of socialism the owners coast along always making money. The best thing about FSG is they let Klopp do his thing, not too dissimilar to how Glazers let Fergie do his stuff. Open to correction

Was the difference maker. Now they are back to level where they don't need a miracle worker, just to be well run and they should continue to be competitive. Competing with City consistently is a slightly different story, but then they couldn't quite manage that with Klopp either

Was it really 'savvy'? The guy just won back to back titles over bayern playing heavy metal football. Even we tried to go for him.

I refuse to believe this will happen because I won't be able to handle it if it doesn't. For those who don't know who Edwards is and what he's already done for us... Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Wowsers.

I agree. He doesn’t appear to be that highly rated on here because he only ever won the one Premier League title, but Klopp is one of the very best of the last twenty years.

Liverpool without him will be like any other “top six” side, except City of course.

The only potential option I can see that COULD be that is Alonso, and he isn’t stupid. He can see that the baseline Klopp has created with these players is 90 point seasons. The squad is limited and he knows that. He will either stay put or take a job where he can have the best players in the league and stretch his legs with his playing style at Bayern.

I think the frustration will seep in pretty quickly when the players real levels are exposed and the investment doesn’t come. The new manager will be on a hiding to nothing.

His first tasks are to find a sporting director and new manager. A job I would not have preferred in anyone else's hands.

A major boost for Liverpool. Without the superb work by Edwards behind the scenes not a chance would Klopp have done as well as he did. It will likely be a smooth transition now with a suitable replacement brought in and structures of the club will remain solid to allow success for the new manger

Seems like a promising move on paper, but I don't think there's a guarantee it will work out again.

Looks like they're trying to go to a multi-club ownership model. Really despise the way football is going.

I agree. Even if we will be beneficiaries of Ineos' multi-club model in the future, I'd hope it also helps Lausanne and Nice in the long run. Even then, I still won't like it, though.

The title of this is incorrect as he hasnt returned to Liverpool he has accepted a job with FSG as CEO of Football and will be overseeing several clubs rather than just Liverpool.

The chance to take up a role over-seeing FSG's entire Football arm rather than just one club was clearly a better oppurtunity than what he was originally offered as well as what was offered by ourselves and Chelsea, its also a no brainer for him as he has worked for Liverpool previously and if it all goes to pot after Klopp leaves he'll be far enough away from the club to avoid getting caught up in the inevitable Sh*t storm.

Haha...it looks like you are happier to have Edwards than Klopp

No one can be bigger than Klopp right now. And his announcement to leave was devastating. Still is. But Edwards, and hopefully soon Alonso gives me lots of hope again.

Liverpool having bestest Sporting CEO ever is very on brand.
