Calming presence to have in the side. Admittedly thought he'd been done for a while but still useful to have.

Well we know what Jose's prime goal in the summer, find a new anchor man to replace carrick long term

I can understand why Jose doesn't fancy Carrick, he's never struck me as the kind of midfielder who would ever appeal to Mourinho's sensibilities as a coach but he's exactly what players like Pogba and Zlatan need and our performance today is a testament to this. Sure, Swansea aren't exactly City away but there's a clear and definable difference in our play when Carrick starts and I hope our coaching staff acknowledge and accept it.

He actually does the things people think Schneiderlin can do but can't. And he can pass the ball better than anyone on our team. It amazes me some still deny the impact he has on our football.

We play Carrick and it lifts everyone, what more does Jose need to see.

Carrick plays, United plays its really that simple.

I used to say we needed to clone Scholes. Now I'm hoping we can do the same for Carrick.

everything looks so much easier and calmer when he's playing.
the ability to be where needed, to take the ball out from defence and to pass forwards. should play league matches, not EFL or Europa league games.

Exactly. He's one of the things the team needs, just use him for feck sakes

It's not a fecking coincidence.

Wonder where we'd be if he started all our EPL games?
One of the worst teams in the PL to be fair. Playing 442 with Ki and Britton are there midfield duo. He's done very well today, but these guys have given him all the time in the world.

Our scouting team better be working overtime to get us the new Carrick. We absolutely need this kind of player. Wish he were ten years younger..

Why are people so surprised? Carrick would excel against any championship side who sit back in their own penalty box..

Same with Rooney he still looks shit, some of his touches and plays are just laugable but he doesn't look dogshit and that's only because Swansea play like that second 11 team at training trying not to touch you let you play and try things... Mourinho said himself: "My pass is also brilliant under no pressure"

Scholes without no training would make even more difference in this game than Carrick..

Said it before and I'll say it again, he should start every PL game. If we're picking our strongest 11 there's just no way Carrick doesn't get in there. He keeps the ball well, makes the defense look better, and is still the best passer we have in midfield. A no-brainer for me.

Even if he has no legs, he should be playing every game.

Who's a carrick-esqe player we could sign then.

Eve though he's still quality his legs aren't getting any younger we really need the "new upcoming carrick"

He's looked class in every game so far. I think Mourinho is correct in saying we need to pick and choose his games - its just a shame we have noone who can play his role and instead we shoehorn Herrera in there.

He's been under zero pressure to be fair. Wouldn't have the amount of time Swansea are gifting to him against more intense sides as we saw last season.

He has done well, but judging by the opposition, I'm taking it with a pinch of salt.

Swansea (A) - Joint bottom of PL
City (H) - Second string City team
Fenerbace (H) - Biggest credit here, but aren't they notoriously bad away from home in Europe.
Northampton (A) - League 1 side

MOTM, his presence is a big calming influence on the team and no one in the team is remotely close to him when it comes to using the ball from deep.

Carrick in a three man midfield :)
In a 2 man one it wouldnt work. Three man with legs around him works.

In fact under LVG, we played our best stuff with him deep and in a 433 :) (albeit five games, but when he did get injured and missed Chelsea, we werent the same).

Is that 4 in a row for Carrick? Northampton, Fenerbahce, City, Swansea

Pretty sure he would've been played more if the staff thought he had the fitness for it. I've seen it mentioned many times by older players that one of the consequences of age is that it takes longer to recover.

Edit: It is actually 6 according to the post-game conference. Mourinho said he would play every game if it were possible

Perfect midfield performance for the majority of the game. He would be in the team against lower table teams.

Man of the match today in my opinion, we look a completely different side with him in the team. His choices of pass are far more positive than any other midfielder we have and he took the shackles off Pogba today which no other midfielder (except for Herrera at times) has been able to do.

I forgot how good he can be. Really good performance.

I really hope Jose realises that he must play in the PL games. Yes Swansea are poor but without Carrick it wouldn't have looked so easy.

He definitely needs to play in a three, Herrera and Pogba in there with him should be fine. Still concerned if he can manage higher pressing sides, hopefully I'll be proven wrong.

He's played 6 games. We've won every one of them, scoring 17 goals in the process.

Needless to say, our record without him in the team is absolutely fecking dreadful.

Most of his games have been against really shite teams, to be fair. I don't think you can read too much into it.

Plus Fergie said a number of times with Carrick even when he was younger, that it generally took him a couple of months into the season to really get going, and he often wouldn't play all that much during that time.

If I remember even in Fergie's last season it was around November before Carrick started playing well and being selected consistently (could be wrong but I seem to recall being infuriated by some of his displays early in that season)

I thought he had a very good game. But I fear if he starts against Arse they will run rings around him.

Both need a Herrera type player for the big matches, I think, with energy and quick feet in tight corners.

I did say in another thread, that for Pogba,

Pirlo - Carrick - slower, intelligent player, pulling the strings without expending much energy
Vidal - Herrera - a terrier type player with lots of energy who can chase the ball.
Pogba - Pogba

This would be the most similar midfield to what Pogba was used to, at Juventus.
And whenever Carrick plays, we do seem to get a win. Is this a coincidence?

Out of interest, did Carrick play in the Arsenal game last year, when we lost 3-0 inside 20 minutes?

I think he did but that game also featured BS essentially playing a completely different game to the rest of the team and leaving the midfield ridiculously exposed. Nobody could have dealt with that it was basically 3 on 1 at times for Carrick.

With the right set up there's no reason at all Carrick couldn't play against Arsenal and have a big impact. Herrera and Pogba providing support with Carrick sitting.
