I agree with this. Ozil is terribly underrated in England. He is one of the best players in the league and certainly one of the most talented.
Arsenal was a bad move for him. He's not the strongest character and being surrounded by Wenger's "mental strength" brigade does him no favours. He played well for Jose at Real and I think he would be a great addition for United.

Saw him live a few years ago for Germany vs Ireland and he was fantastic. Then he moved to Arsenal. Wouldnt be my first choice to join us now but on a free? Be hard to turn that down. There is the somewhat minor issue of him pretending to be the invisible man in big matches though.

I'd rather Mata or Mkhi then Ozil! Wenger giving it billy big balls, why not cash in and start building then have 2 players for a season who don't want to be there?
If we got Özil on a free then I think that means Griezmann would be off next summer. I don't think we could play them both together with a midfield 3. Which I'm pretty sure is mandatory considering Matić and Pogba both play best in a 3. Unless at 3/5 at the back system covers for them well enough.

I think the interesting part of this is Wengers conclusion that we will see more star players run down contracts as it will become harder for them to get a transfer. While I can follow the logic, it feels like a typical Wenger idea which wount come to fruition and is just a means for him to validate going down this route.
I'll also add that Ozil and Sanchez will likely start taking it easy around january to avoid an injury which would rule out a transfer or a place at the world cup.

No. The signing of Matic means Pogba will have the onus on him to be our creative midfielder, and not sit as deep.

Mata is a better player in my opinion and I won't be convinced otherwise.

I don't think this would even be a discussion if there wasn't the chance of getting him on a free. That's probably a pretty good indication that we shouldn't bother.

He might want to experience Turkish culture first hand, seeing that he is after all, of Turkish descent. He might be doing what youngsters do when he said that, assume that once he was 30, he would be a fossil and looking to end his career gracefully, not realizing that at 30, he'd still probably feel like he was 18 in mind

Nah, just lazy journalism because he's spent his summer with Miss Turkey.
I was at the Emirates cup game yesterday. A couple of times he went over to collect the ball for a throw and when it was thrown to him insisted on controlling it on his shoulder or neck to show off rather than just catching it. I don't know why but it just made me think he must be a bellend.
He also started getting stick in the second half due to his tendency to get the ball in a good position and then do absolutely nothing with it. At another point a couple of team mates were yelling at him for being too lazy to come back fully for a corner and cover in case it was taken short.
He just seems like too much of a little fanny for someone who isn't exactly a Ronaldo/Messi level player, or anything close to it. He's always seemed that way. Great to have in the team when you're going to win 2 or 3 nil anyway, but in any game where it's tough you risk him being more of a problem to you than the opposition.

Goes missing in big games? Easy. Just play him in not so big games and have one of the other players who supposedly play well in big games.
