McTominay - what’s his potential?

He has improved a lot, his positioning is a lot better now than it was 6 months ago.

He's proven me and a lot of other posters wrong. Surely he's up there as one of the best current central midfielders in the league. I mean the competition currently isn't great with the dearth of world class midfielders at the moment but he's more than held his own in the league while others have wilted.
I don't think you can place him up there with the Kante's just yet when he has driven 2 sides to league titles not mid table. We also have the likes of Bernado Silva, De Bruyne, Fabinho, Wijnaldum etc who also play midfield. I like Scott and he is a very unique player so we will see how his season pans out and hopefully he keeps some consistency to earn being compared with some of the winners on this list.

But in these type of games his job should be to provide the ball to the modern day Scholes, Cantona/Yorke/Sheringham, Beckham, Giggs or fullbacks for a cross.

He can pass quickly and simple with purpose. But he cant create or set/dictate the tempo of play. Yet anyway. He probably never will, but who knows considering the mentality and will of that man.

- Against top teams we should «set him free» in a 433.
- Against «poor» teams he should play deeper (a position he might have to learn but did a lot against good teams for Mourinho) with two more creative players next to him.

I agree that he'd be a great 8 in a 4-3-3. Lucky for him its a formation and role that many of the top sides are playing.

Starting to really shine through as an on pitch leader and sets the tone for us which is something we’ve lacked for a long time, we’ve seriously lacked certain types of characters and leaders.

Players like McTominay and Maguire lead by example and put in 100% every time they step on the pitch and for me are the first names on the team sheet along with De Gea and Pogba when all fit, I’d like to see Maguire given the captaincy full time with McTominay as full time vice captain.

Have you lunatics ever seen Roy Keane play? McT would do well to be even half the player he was.

It was a question about potential and ceiling. Considering how much McTominay has developed the past two years, who knows what his limitations at his likely peak years (probably 27-28ish) will be? 4-5 years from know.

Remember, Roy Keane was the same age as McTominay when he arrived at Man Utd. I remember Ferguson even used him at right back in his first season.

Keane signed for us as a British record transfer and was much better at Forest than McT has been for us. There's no comparison. I mean, sure, it's possible McT could become as good as he was, but it's incredibly unlikely.

I also hate how on the Caf, as soon as a young player has a good run of form, he's proclaimed as some mercurial talent by people. How about we not set standards too high for these players, maybe?

Must be tough being a Utdfan then. Lots of hate.

Personally, I’m too thrilled about the progress of a young player and enjoy to much to spend time hating that people seem to appreciate it.

 because what I said implies I don't yeah?

I do think we have a couple of midlife crisis’ going on.

He’s in good form though, playing really well.

Looks like he went from underrated to overrated in a space of a few months. New Roy Keane and a future United great and a legend? I’d say hold your horses.

He looks great at the moment though.

He's doing very well since Pogba got injured, and improving, but I wouldn't go overboard about him yet. His passing has to improve and his tackling. But he is definitely worth his place on this side now.

If we get Fletcheresque performances out of him consistently that would be great. He will improve over time and with better players around him.

Future United captain and legend. I will be surprised if that doesn’t happen. In the list of midfielder at United, he can surpass Roy Keane.

Haha calm down . Keane was the greatest midfielder of his generation I'd be happy if McT can surpass someone like Butt

Hes a decent player, certainly think he is better than Rice who we get linked with quite a bit. However clearly some people overrate him if they think he can even be half as good as Roy Keane

Him and Pogba would make a great midfield if they had a holding midfielder to play with them. Hopefully we can get one in January

His form is more impressive when you consider the difficult period this team is going through. Looking at his attributes he holds up well in all aspects - passing, engine, positioning, goal threat, mentality. Its unwise to get carried away at this point in his career but he doesn't have an obvious weakness to his game and if he continues to improve as consistently as he has been he will be one hell of a midfielder.

I think the Fletcher comparison is very apt. I don't see him quite as box-to-box or as mobile as Fletcher, but the heart, desire and energy is there. One thing I would like to see him improve on is his ability to improve his shooting, but he's already scored 2 PL goals this season, so I imagine he's already working on that.

Would be delighted if we could get 7 or 8 PL goals out of him this season, or even more.

For me Scott McTominay at times demonstrates various facets of some of our great past midfielders; Bryan Robson, (willingness to get in the box and amongst the goals); Darren Fletcher (his overall 'engine') and Roy Keane, (getting struck in), he could become a hell of a midfield player in due course, especially if his rate of improvement/consistency continues on a upward trajectory, as it is just now.

Am I the only one who hadn't given him any stick? I've said he's a very good player from day 1 and always stated it! The Caf is blind or do not watch many games!

Rashford wasn't pulling up any trees at youth level and nor was McTominay.

Meanwhile, Chong has been and he looks like he probably won't make it.

Funny old game.

Yet Sir Alex made a beeline to him that time, he'd seen the potential and was telling him.

Agreed, and possibly Garner can play that role too over next couple of seasons.

The boy got top class attitude working hard and stay disciplined for most of 90 minutes.
While I do not see the potential for him to become one of the world’s best he could become an integral part similar to e.g. Henderson.

Not many holding midfielers with bis potential about these days. As we see everytime we try to recruit in that area.
A genuine box to box player who can sit carry the ball is something special.

Yes, you're the only one who had the vision to notice his potential. You might well be the greatest poster in the history of the Caf, a true footballing Oracle.

Ceiling = consistent McTominator, b2b centre midfielder. Can't see any other resemblances of a past great player, he is his own type.

Mentality and leadership, checked. He got everything - all around football abilities, without the fancy stuffs. Continuous upgrades in all of those he have - more goals, more presence, more efficient, more consistent, more key winning moments. Captain candidate.

I just hope he don't lose his head, influenced by the deserved stardom he's getting.

Getting better and better. The way he drives forward with the ball is something we haven't seen in along time from midfield. I also like he has a bit of bite in him as well, not afraid to get stuck in. His passing is improving and will continue to do so. Very clean, crisp striker of the ball.

Sky sports -

Time and again he repelled Chelsea's attacks, positioning himself smartly in front of the defence and ensuring they could not carve United open. Frank Lampard's men had averaged seven shots on target per game across their previous four fixtures - scoring 10 goals in the process - but they only managed two on Wednesday night.

Scott McTominay's performance in stats
Five tackles (1st) Five interceptions (1st) Nine recoveries (1st) 60 touches (2nd) 82% pass accuracy (3rd) Four fouls won (1st)
The Scot made his presence felt from the start and the statistics underlined his role in this resilient Manchester United display. McTominay made more tackles and more interceptions than any of his team-mates. Nobody made more ball recoveries or contested more duels. He managed it all without risking a second yellow card.

This.

I learned long ago that the caf is a place for Elvis shitposts and insightful threads about cryptocurrency. All football talk here is absolutely moronic, especially when it comes to McTominay, Cleverley and Solskjaer.

Agreed. Fletcher was not what you consider a world class player yet he was considered indispensable for the team.
Mourinho said it when he lost CL final through suspension.
And I see McT being the same - not world class but a player that every top team needs.

Best player in the world, ever. Better than Messi, Maradona, and Pele put together.

I am not a fan. Yet...
Here is the thing. He has great passion, work rate, scores goals which is great for midfielder and he cost zero. Everything great with all that and if we will use him as squad player then great. I am all into that. Imo, squad players are just like McT. Players who can do their job on decent level.
But, we are Man Utd. We have ambition to be on top of the league again and be no1 in England again. So if we are talking about first 11 midfielder then i want and i think that standard should be whole package. Midfielder with flawless technique. And McT doesn't have potential to become that. He lacks creativity and technique in general. And i don't like it. When we sit back he is good but with him we can't dominate in possession and he will not provide some killer ball or some great assist.

To sum it up. I like McT, i want him in this squad but only as cover option.

I think he's 22, and this is his first full season playing regular, his performances so far have been very good, last night at a very tricky away ground, was excellent. Jose thought something of him perhaps that has instilled a lot of confidence in him.

He's a big lad and he does put himself around the pitch, his ,moments in final 3rd are getting better, he drives at the defence which iether gets a free kick or opens up others, his shooting is going to get better as well. Hope he keeps it going.

His technique is very underrated. He has a much surer first touch than a lot of our team and he’s surprisingly good at coming away with the ball from a group of opponents. He’s probably one of the better overall passers in the team too - probably the best after Pogba. And it’s looking like he’s continuing to improve in that regard as well. He’s already started making those fizzed in grounded passes to the forwards that Carrick used to make. I think any talk of what his ceiling is is a bit premature when he’s improving in all aspects so much.

Wish he was playing for England, we could do with him at international level.
Does he stand out for Scotland as England is another level?. England midfield is deffo a weakness but McTom would most likely add to the disappointing England midfielders who cannot receive or play possession football or dominate opposition. England needs midfielder of a much higher quality.
