I know very little about boxing, but I'm just curious about something lads.. I just read that Mayweather says that he's going to relinquish his titles/belts soon so that others can have a shot when he retires. How does that work? Could he have kept the titles "forever" into retirement?

I would think he can't keep the belts forever, or at a minimum, he can't keep the title of Champion since other fighters will compete for it after he's finished.

Thought Foxx did a decent job with the anthem, certainly less predictable than the usual. He's got a decent voice imo. Not sure why they bothered with the Mexican anthem when none of the fighters were Mexican.

There really is no race angle to who supports who. A lot of celebrities know both Floyd and Manny and are supporting either accordingly.

The man can't hold a note, Raoul. All over the show. Not exactly Marvin Gaye eh.

I would respect Floyd's style a lot more if he actually tried to land a few combinations, and push the other fighter back for a few seconds while also showing his "defensive masterclass".

Probably the fact he just wanted to win at all costs to preserve his record is the reason he fights within himself.

What I want to know is what happens when Mayweather fights another counter fighter, who takes the initiative then? do they both just run around in circles avoiding eachother until the end of the round
Destroyed Juan Manuel Marquez.

If you win a world title then you get to keep the belt or a copy of the belt for life. A new one will be made for a new champion when there is one.

He's got a soulful voice. Never expected him to adhere to the conventional notes of the anthem.

Not sure that was particularly soulful. More like a mouthful of notes in a random order. Great singers can hold notes, regardless whether they're soul singers or whatever.

Yep, never thought he was the world's best singer. I've listened to his other stuff over the years and he does have a talent for singing though.

Auto tuned perhaps? I'll have to listen to his recorded stuff, though.

The women that do be standing in the background with big smiles permanently plastered on their face, at like, press conferences and stuff, they're pretty creepy. F1 has them as well.

Um, also, a boxing opinion?

There was one in Indianapolis during the 6th and 7th round of the draft, she was truly creepy.

Duran V Mayweather then. Who's going to win? Obviously Duran is too long in the tooth now... But you get my drift.

Duran 1980 will give Mayweather major problems. Non-stop pressure and feints, immense inside game and a granite chin. The scary thing about Duran is that he can keep that intensity for not just 12 but 15 rounds. Manny is similar to Duran not in their style but rather their approach to boxing. It no holds barred, relentless brawling, both of them can fight like an absolute beast for 15 rounds. But Manny is really a mid-range fighter as opposed to Duran who is an inside fighter. Duran's style would be a nightmare for Mayweather. Prime Leonard almost tasted the canvas early in round 2. That's how incredible Duran was.

The whole era was incredible, to be fair.

And Jamie Foxx sure does love auto tuning. Just been listening to his stuff.

Have to give it to Mayweather. Absolute masterclass, he make it look so easy against an opponent who we all thought would give him a real test. Cemented himself as one of the best ever.

Mayweather was masterful but I have to say I was really disappointed with Manny, the type of all action displays he's famous for just didn't materialise and i thought he looked pretty disheartened going into the second half. He didn't chase the knockout late on even though he was clearly behind (and i don't believe for a second he really thought he was winning) and to be out thrown by someone as efficient with his shots as mayweather is says it all. the injury excuse always looks a bit sour after the fight but maybe he really was, I'm struggling to explain such a low key attempt at the biggest fight of his life. Maybe the JMM knockout was on his mind, perhaps he felt floyds power early and was too worried to go in blazing again.

Most bizarre thing was Tom Brady, who was at the Kentucky Derby hours earlier, then shows up in Vegas for the fight. Reminded me a bit of Phil Collins playing LiveAid in the states, then hopping on a Concorde to play in the London show.

Mayweather outclassed Pacquiao from start to finish. Disappointing performance from Pacquiao though, he didn't apply enough pressure and didn't throw enough combinations to even stand a chance of winning.

Pacquiao doesn't beat up women either. Mayweather is easy to dislike and Pac is quite an endearing character.

So by that logic all those black celebs are OK with beating up women?

There really is no race angle to who supports who. A lot of celebrities know both Floyd and Manny and are supporting either accordingly.

Apart from Bieber, I haven't seen or heard any white celebrity supporting Floyd. Haven't seen a single African-American star in Pacman's camp, either. I'm not saying there's anything to it, but it makes you wonder why.

It's amazing how much options you have when you're that rich.

Tyson wanted Pacman to win.

There were loads of celebrities both white and black supporting both fighters as would obviously be the case.

There is a racial component to it. A lot of casual/boxing fans I know that are black were rooting for Mayweather. Not all, but a significant amount. Doesn't matter at the end of the day.

Boring fight. Has Mayweather ever been involved in an exciting fight? Disappointed, yes I know it was a fight for boxing aficionados but I won't be shelling out £20 and waiting up till 5 int morning for that again.

He is the Chelsea of boxing

Perhaps, but when its man vs man at the same weight it's a little more forgivable than £300m vs £30m and playing the way they do. I'd also argue Mayweather is at a much higher level as a boxer than Chelsea have ever been in their history.

Watching a masterful defensive performance like that really is a treat for boxing fans, as it's just unrivaled in the sport right now. Watching Jose play two lines of four doesn't really have the same amount of depth & quality to it :wenger:

Pacquiao fights to beat his opponent. Mayweather fights to impress the judges.

Nonsense. Mayweather tries to win a boxing match - Pacman tries to win a fight. May didn't fall into the trap of going toe to toe, and deservedly won the boxing match.

This I agree with. The only thing I dislike about Mayweather's fighting is the way he holds and grabs people. Other than that I like him.

You'll have a heartattack watching the average Wlad Klitschko match

Aye, I was hoping Manny would win but he disappointed me too. A lot of people are blaming Mayweather for the boring fight but the whole point was that Manny was meant to actually challenge him rather than letting Floyd do what he wanted. He's as much to blame for underperforming that badly imo.

Maybe the injury was a factor but I suspect not. I know if my fighter was going into this sort of fight then I'd make I sure lay the groundwork for any "he was injured, rematch maybe?" excuses I might need to call on later. Just smart management really.

It looked to me like whatever tactical plan Manny had came unstuck very quickly and he didn't really have any plan B. He actually didn't seem to know how to get at Floyd, even when he was clearly behind and needed to pull something out of the bag.

During the fight last night, Floyd Mayweather was earning Ronaldo's weekly wage every 4 seconds.

That's why no one's interested in boxing any more.

Yes. The fight just happened to make the biggest revenue ever for one match and attracted a bunch of who is who in hollywood and sports. No one is interested in boxing.
