Match Compilations

Needed some break from the frauds so here is a pinch of Rome Magic

Very good game from the fraud IIRC as its been a while since i made the vid, Arnau gifted him the goal but overall game was pretty good and he only had one brainfart at the back.

Probably my favorite project since Gazza. Not really the type to fall in love in a fullback but sweet lord how can you not? So different to most fullbacks of that era, pretty much a modern defender moved back in time, shame he is pretty much forgotten, reckon a win against either Real in European Cup Final or Soviets in Euro Final would catapult some of those gems(Sekularac, Galic, Skoblar) deep into all time waters.

I was reading an old thread on another football forum earlier about bundesliga average kicker ratings for 60s-80s and noticed Jusufi was high in the fullbacks section (i'd forgotten he even played in Germany). Seems like most of the Yugoslav players that moved to W.Germany in 60s/70s did well there. Zebec was really highly rated as a manager too.

2.05 Vogts
2.33 Briegel
2.42 Dietz
2.44 Höttges
2.46 Reuter
2.47 Kaltz
2.48 Jusufi
2.48 Saida
2.50 Bleidick
2.51 Heidemann

first time ever went to check the result before picking a game, of course the Gods punished me with a game where he got injured in the first half! Looked class in the period he did play! @Jim Beam

closest thing to a DM performance i saw.....defensive wise not that good, partly at fault for 2 goals but looked much more composed on the ball and his passing was much more accurate.

rankings that year(most years tbf) were absolute travesty, how Papin won when he got schooled by Belodedici in the final while being a big favorite is beyond me...and funnily enough, that isnt the funniest thing, Pancev finished in top 3!

prosinecki in this era having a bad game, collectors item....still grabbed an assist though.

England playing weird 4312 with Scholes as n10, fair to say it didnt work....

Some other Germany vs Netherlands stuff with Olaf Thon getting his ankles brutalised by Netherlands during a vital WC qualifier; these 70s/80s between the two countries were always really heated. The 89/90 season he would suffer injuries that would become recurring, derailing his trajectory and consistency, but in this 88/89 game (in the midst of a great first season at Bayern) you can see some of why he was considered a great young talent in his Schalke years and one of the very best players in West Germany at the time.

@Invictus
sooooo good, reminds me a lot of Scholes, both in style of play(even "poor" tackling) and in career trajectory in terms of playing roles.

watching the game and thinking how Figo isnt doing much and then he destroys Mauro Silva!

Heard a lot of talk, Del Piero was this, Del Piero was that before injury but never really saw it in games i watched.....until now. Tbf he was always a joy to watch but different class this game....defended well, hold up play was good, was creative and scored a winner against a pretty decent River side with old Francescoli and young Sorin, Salas, Ortega and Julio Cruz-

Played much higher then usual in the build up but that only regressed his game as he wasnt involved in the build up stage on his half where he is actually good so he saw less of the ball yet his impact on the other end was non existent. Defensive wise meh against a Barca flop Simao and had one comical moment at the offside trap attempt. Good form didnt last long.

Ferri marking Völler in the first leg of the 1991 UEFA Cup final. The German is practically nullified, except for one dangerous cross in the 2nd half. His only notable shot I remember comes when he isn't defended by Ferri on a counter. Ferri's performance on the ball is mostly composed and constructive, but three rather bad passes could have led to danger.

What's also remarkable about this game is that Bergomi is Ferri's CB partner in a back four (Brehme and Paganin the fullbacks). Bergomi plays the libero role expertly in both directions, and by now I think he should be recognized as an actual progressive defender. Defensively, the Inter pair is a brick wall, Brehme also deserving credit for his performance against the ball.

Inter's defense is at times playing the 1991 equivalent of a high line, the defenders pushing up to (and sometimes beyond) the halfway line and being instrumental in building up play from the back.

Out of curiosity was he getting many direct assists in the bigger la liga games you've been watching? I was having a look through his CL record earlier, and the high volume there was what jumped out at me...25 in his first six seasons, with 77 games played. Drops off a cliff after that, but that direct creative outlet seems to have been a real strength for them in Europe at the time.

no idea about the stats in the league overall but from big games im covering his end product is low and his offensive impact very, very limited for a player of his reputation.

Bergomi as CB (libero) in a back four, from the same game as the Ferri comp above. Taken together, these two videos give a good impression of their partnership that night at San Siro.

Performance is assured and efficient in a high stakes game (bar one tackle towards the end), as you'd expect from a defender of his caliber. Attacking moves increase in frequency and scope as the game progresses.
