Mata - free agent

Eriksen is 30, Mata is 34. Mata will play another 2 years at a lower level and hang up his boots.

There's a reason he's still a free agent months after he left.

I believe he mentioned he was taking his time choosing the right offer.

We absolutely should not sign him but I very much doubt he has a shortage of offers on a free.

we may as well get Carricky back, i hear he is not signed with any club at the moment

Imagine bringing him back in. Just wow!
He barely contributed for the last few years as it was, lovely chap and that.

Of course not however I did think yesterday watching Eriksen play CM that had ETH been around during Matas time he could've played that role too. Despite the amount of time he spent here we never really saw the best of him and its easy to forget what a brilliant footballer he was. Shame really

Hasnt he got an ambassador/coaching role here for him when he finishes playing?

For sure. Mata had the misfortune of terrible managers. Unfortunately he also lost that zip now.

Why do high profile free agents who could presumably find a decent club at the snap of a finger so often spend absolutely ages without a club?

Is it some sort of strategy? Wait until the window closes then a struggling or injury ridden side will become so desperate that they'll throw a lot of money at me?

Is this a serious thread? Mata has no legs. We released him for a reason. He hasn't signed for anybody for the same reason. Mata absolutely cannot play as a #8 in the PL. Teams would walk through our midfield.

While we are at it we can bring Scholes and Carrick back.

Mata could have done what Big Tom Huddlestone is doing with the u21s.

I dont know what's worse, this thread or the fact people still are writing Erikson, Ericsson, Erikssen, Eriksson.

Absolutely not and I can’t believe it’s even being suggested, we’ve literally spent the last three years saying he should be moved on. He’s a really classy guy and I’m sure he’s the kind of person you want in the dressing room BUT in his prime and NOT years past it to the point his legs have gone and no one has still signed him.

Him and Lingard please. Let's fill ourselves with deadwood.

Seriously this must be one of those ideas where you won't find anyone who agrees, Mata is done as has been done for a couple of seasons at least. We're trying to implement a high stamina high pressure, quick on the break fast team. I can't think of a lesser suited player for that than Mata.

This is surely a piss take? I will always love Mata but he should have left in summer 2020. He should probably retire now.

Exactly.

There was a weirdly vocal group on here that routinely insisted we underused him for years and took great offence to the suggestion that he hasn't been a top division-level player for years now. Thought they'd be fewer now that he's left and hasn't found a club yet, but apparently not!

The suggestion that Mata at his peak could have played the role Eriksen is in right now was a contentious one. To think the 34-year-old version would be any use at all is ludicrous.

Found the topic I was thinking of:

We’ve criminally underused Matic and Mata these past few seasons | RedCafe.net

I am quite tempted to go in there and see if they're willing to reassess now we've seen that the only club willing to take him finished 13th in the literal Turkish league last season?

Very much doubt they were the only club who made him an offer. I imagine he went for the biggest contract he could get
Probably a clever move really, as I imagine Gala would be under real pressure to throw money at players after finishing the lowest they have ever finished in the Turkish league

The biggest contract he could get came from a desperate Galatasaray coming off a disastrous season in Turkey. And the other most concrete rumour from earlier in the summer was Leeds, who just about kept themselves in the Premier League last season. Hardly backs up the claim that he's good enough to be useful for a CL or Europa League club, does it?

Because the logic from the group that's clearly triggered me is that we (a CL and Europa League club throughout the last five years) should have used him more often ahead of other players in his position despite his consistent and crippling lack of impact. Literally a quote in there from someone saying they don't remember Mata ever playing as poorly for us as Fernandes last season!

He is in Istanbul today. Is about to sign a one year contract with Galatasaray

He’d be the last of our free transfer releases that I’d want to re-sign. He’s completely finished at this level.

In my memory he turned from great player to pretty poor from the moment he came to us. I could be wrong though.

He was good when he signed, had a couple of good periods in the LVG years, and the odd good game after that, but a month after we signed him we extended Rooney's contract by 5 years, effectively guaranteeing Mata'd never see signficant game time in his best position, and his physical decline in his late 20s was unusually steep.

Apparently out of contract again after not extending with Galatasaray. Do you think he’s about to quit for good or will there be a final season in Saudi or the MLS?

Perhaps a return to Oviedo for a couple of seasons?

To be fair, Moyes basically played him as a traditional winger.

Dave is free, Mata is free (if anyone can be bothered googling it to see in Ander is free?) they should get the band together and make a YouTube channel touring the world, hugging people and stealing doughnuts.
