Mason Mount

It’s not tribalism to disagree about something.

Highly doubt you’d come in the Mount thread and be like “meh” though. It’s your natural instinct to want to defend him and that’s fine.

I mean he had a pretty good game against iran its not like the rest of team were world beaters tonight.

I mean look at the comments, folk are so quick to jump at his back, southgate has his favorites, I don't see so much hate for the others.
He had a reasonable game against Iran but was still probably our weakest player across our forward line. And that's on a good day where everything we did worked.

I agree I think Mount at domestic level is relatively decent. Never thought of him to be a typical 8 or defensively a 6.

International football is certainly not the total end judgement of a players ability but Southgate does have a habit of magnifying a players weaknesses by nullifying their strengths. Rashford on the right is a good example. Kane looked immobile, doesn't really bring much to the build up of the team

I think if a more fluid forward player was on tonight the midfield would have had more of a foothold in the game due to more spaces being available from the movement.

Yeah this isn’t even me being a Mount homer. I hate the way Southgate uses him.

How he and Kane both lasted to the end only Beelzebub knows.

I don’t entirely agree. I think the Mount criticism is warranted to an extent. I’m trying to add some context to his situation as I see it (not that others don’t see it or think it’s important enough to make a difference). Nobody in the team impressed me. Some were worse than others.

They are jumping on his back because he played another 90 minutes in an attacking role and once again offered absolutely nothing.

The other attacking favourites of Southgate were all subbed.

There’s no “hate”, just comments about him being a bit shite again.

Cafés hate boner for him is strange.
He's always been overrated. He shows up against the bottom teams but then goes into hiding against good teams. For someone so hyped up he's crazy inconsistent just like a certain someone we had.
Last season he scored 13 goals you'd think he was amazing right? Then you look closely and he basically stat padded against the bottom of the table teams - Norwich 20th 4g, Watford 19th 1g, Leeds 17th 2g, Everton 16th 1g, Southampton 15th 2g. West Ham were the only team in the top half he scored against.

Funny how it’s only the Chelsea fans that are making excuses for him.

He’s just a posh man’s Dele Alli.

Maybe on here because there aren’t many of us but trust me mate, Chelsea fans are his biggest critics. He’s a divisive player at a club level too.

Taking off Bellingham instead of Mount was strange.

Mind you, starting Mount over Foden (or even Maddison or Grealish) is probably even more perplexing.

Very average overhyped player who had a good few months a couple of season ago. Foden or Maddison should be starting over him.

to be honest people are just questioning why he gets in over someone like Foden who is 100x the player.

its becoming pretty obvious mount is one of southgates favourites.

They were both shit. Both should have been subbed. In fact the whole team could have been subbed off bar Maguire and I can’t believe I’m saying that. Maddison is not a CM, Foden is not a CM and Grealish is not a CM. Perhaps that’s why Mount is being shoehorned in there.

Our lack of options in that position is diabolical really. Henderson? Past it. Phillips? Unfit and not good enough. Then you have ward prowse? Yeah we are scraping the barrel already.

He's the sort of player that Chelsea will bin off to West Ham or Everton in the not so distant future. Definitely not an England starter.

Let’s be honest, Southgate’s taken a massive step moving away from two purely defensive midfielders. He’s not going to play an attacking 10 as well. Mount is a complete waste of space. Played because Southgate is a coward. I hope he starts for Chelsea for the next decade.

I honestly cannot fathom how this guy starts over Foden. Absolutely mental. It's like starting Soler over Pedri.

never a truer word spoken. Some just dislike him, some think hes a decent player all round, and some just overhype him.

If you think either of those will afford, let alone sign Mount, I'll have some of what you've taken.

Genuinely dont think he will ever leave, same with Reece James

He's so, so, so shite for England.

I don't watch enough of Chelsea to really rate him properly at club level but he's been poor whenever I've seen him this season.

For England he's a total no mark. It's like watching Van De Beek for us.

Obviously he will have had good games but every time I watch him I think he’s absolutely non existent. I honestly don’t know what he brings to the team

The way Southgate uses him, I totally agree. They’re different players though. I don’t think Foden can play in midfield as well as Mount but as an attacker, it makes sense to leave Foden or Grealish on the bench.

I agree. The structure of the team is passive and as a unit they are not functioning in the right manner. The attacks are too few and far between and I fear England are only expressive when they are ahead and front runners during a match.

Well to start with your tag is Chelsea. No bias there. Secondly they were the better players. Just saying.

Well maybe you’re just projecting? Considering you’re not upset about my defence of Mount but that I had a less than enthused response to someone who said Maguire and Shaw had good games.

He's tidy on the ball and industrious but will not take the game by the scruff of the neck or able to play poorly and produce a moment of magic out of nowhere like say a foden or even our own bruno

Projecting on what? Seriously Mount was woeful tonight like most of the England team. The original post was about Maguire and Shaw being England's better players, which is true.

VdB comparisons are very apt.
The invisible football player mk2………….

He is Deli Ali 2.0 Nobody is sure how he plays, including himself, so gets away with running around the place. As soon as teams cop he is useless he is off to Turkey

Then you won't be going anywhere meaningful
We won the Champions League with Mount being one of our best players throughout that campaign. He's absolutely proven that he can contribute at the very highest level. "Won't be going anywhere meaningful"? Absolute nonsense.

He was shit tonight for sure, no worse than about 8 other England players.

There's a reason every manager he's ever had loves him, he's a top player.

It’s not that deep, so no point in keeping this back and forth going but I guess what I mean is you told me to leave tribalism at the door because I said meh about someone praising Shaw and Maguire’s performances. That’s what triggered you, not my (admittedly a bit blinkered) defence of Mount, so perhaps the person engaging in tribalism here is you?

Absolutely nothing player. I cannot name a single attribute he has that ranks above average. Foden is 10x the player.

You use the word top player lightly.

And he was probably the worst on the pitch with Trippier, the others also outshone him last game, I don’t think Chelsea will win the league with Mount playing as a main part of the main 11.

He was a massive hindrance to England today. He should obviously not be in the team as it's set up right now.

Seriously, triggered, what are you 12 and a Musk fan boy? Maguire and Shaw were England's better players tonight. And if you genuinely think on a Man United forum Maguire is a great player well I guess you've ignored this forum for the last 2 years.

Good player. But not as good as Grealish, Foden, or Maddison. He wouldn't get in the United team ahead of Bruno, wouldnt get in the Arsenal team ahead of Odegaard.

The beneficiary of being a Gareth favorite, along with Maguire and possibly Trippier who shouldn't be in the team at present.

A front four of Saka RF, Foden LF, Maddison as the 10, with Kane upfront would be vastly better. The passing, ball retention in tight spaces, in general the technique would go up a level. Because reality is in the tight pockets Mount and Sterling are not comfortable, and their creativity is lacking. Its not really anti Chelsea bias as even Chelsea fans will admit their attacking play this year has been great given they are 12th in terms of goals scored.

I think England need a more adventurous manager, yes its tournament football but England have the players to really impose themselves on the opposition and they dont. Englands next manager really should have a history of attacking fooball and preference for the technical players over the grifters and workhorses. I rekcon Wenger would fit like a glove. Mind you he is semi-retired now but he should atleast be asked
