If United are willing to improve the bid now, then it's obviously getting done.

But it makes United look weak IMO. Now clubs know they'll even raise their "final" bids.

Wouldn't even put it beyond United still paying the full £65m

Yet every credible source suggests we’re simply improving the structure of our final bid.

Arsenal and City have signed players so now Mount is slowly turning into a potential "great" signing that will transform our team...

Don’t do it to yourself lads.

I'd say people need to look at the likes of Rashford and Shaw this season when compared to last season to see the difference that team performance can make to those of an individual player within that team.

Mount might not have had the best season last year but he was exceptional in the two prior to that. If we're capable of extracting that level of performance out of him, and Ten Hag clearly believes that he can, then I'd honestly say 55 million will actually look like a very good price tag on our end.

Good points, ten Hag’s system should suit Mount perfectly. It’s funny that many are focusing only on last season when Chelsea were a train wreck but not the 2 years where he was excellent playing under Tuchel.

A lot about this is just guess work he has no history of scoring from midfield when not playing in one of the attacking midfield positions. He is a better player than McFred but we can come to find that McFred are better deep midfielders than Mount. To be fair we don't even know where he will play, maybe as some suggest Bruno will be the one to come deep. We will have to wait until August to find out what EtH is cooking up.

Oh of course all of this is hypothetical but that was part of my thoughts in the first place. It’s the people dismissing without apparent thought or explanation. I agree his goals have come higher up the pitch but I hope with improved possession the he will find himself in those positions anyway. As for whether he can play deeper I’ve seen him play here for both England youth and Chelsea youth and as an 8. Think it’ll give him more space and a chance to come into the box late so to speak.

You could be right, current incumbents may prove to be better but I consider this a rational risk, all things considered. Can see why Ten’s interested.

I really hope we get this deal done. He’s a top quality player and exactly the profile we need to implement the managers’ vision. I love it when we get the managers’ first choice. Honestly at 55/60m he’s a great deal. People get too hung up on the one year left bollocks. All that does it represent an opportunity to get a deal done at a reasonable price. If he had 3 years left, Chelsea would want 80m for him. He’d be out of our price range. But because of circumstances we can get the managers’ first choice in at a decent price, nice and early in the window. What’s not to like?

He a two time Chelsea player of the year, CL winner, England regular. PL proven in spades. Only 24. And he is the player the manager wants. To get this profile of player for 55-58m from a PL rival is a very rare opportunity.

He’s also a very good player. I love this deal and can’t wait for it to go through. Fingers crossed. One of the most sensible transfers I’ve seen us do in ages.
Completely agree.

I've said similar spread amongst the few posts I've done on here, but never said it as well as that all in one post.

Reciprocally, Declan Rice is criticised as not being worth 100m, but that's because he's being coached by David Moyes in a mediocre team. Under a better coach, in the right system, he's going to fukn kill it, no question.
Or alternatively, Moyes system is helping cover up his limitations in possesion?

His underdog system is known for making defensive minded players look a lot better than they actually are.

He could be a great signing but this team will be transformed through multiple signings and great coaching.

so we are back in for him ? well according to Mirror football we are.
my guess it's the structuring of payment now - Chelsea clearly don't want to keep him and he wants the move, so it might be the "upfront" amount that could swing it... as usual we piss about, haggle and then end up paying. we should just get to the paying part or say no thanks and mean it

Both Arteta and Pep wanted Rice, with the former obviously making him the top priority signing.

Both Managers use DM's that absolutely need to be good on the ball, especially under pressure, and they need to be able to progress the ball by passing or dribbling. I'm fairly confident that both Arteta and Pep aren't wrong about this.

Have to agree with this... I think he's probably better than he looks at West Ham where he's possibly doing someone else's work too. Pep doesn't make many wrong judgement calls (although I still wonder about Phillips)

To be honest that's not exactly an analogy you can take. Not saying Rice is bad but just because Pep and Arteta wants him doesn't make him a great player either. Maguire, Sanchez etc are examples.

When Mount played behind Havertz the false 9 was Mount actually a CAM or playing deeper?

Chelsea under Tuchel (when he was voted player of the year twice) played a back 3 with 2 cm's in Jorginho/Kovacic and Kante. Then you would have Pulisic, Mount, Ziyech, Odoi and whoever I am forgetting would be supporting Harvetz if he played as the 9.

An example from the ucl final.

Didn't ETH try with 2 no 8s and one DM ? Remember he tried that lot of times last season.

He isn't going to come here and sit deep. It will be one DM and Mount + Bruno. One of the full backs will tuck in and be an extra midfielder with Casemiro.

Against stronger sides, he may sacrifice one of the wing options and go with Fred.

They wanted both it seems. They're now linked to a Mason Mount alternative in the Hungarian player from RB Leipzig, Dominik Szobszlai (sp). Who I wanted us to sign during Solkskjaer's time as manager.

He's always looked a really classy player. Mad potential. Great clean striker of the ball. Not unlike Mount but more of an unknown quantity.

Sacrifice one of the wing positions so one of Bruno and Mount can play on the wing instead?

It is absolutely an analogy that I can make. It's literally true.

Both Managers rely on DM's as essentially the linchpin of the entire side. They need to be good on the ball, be able to absorb pressure / beat a press, and need to be able to progress the ball forward by passing or dribbles. The gameplan falls apart without it.

Both Managers were happy for their clubs to bid a huge sum on him. Obviously that suggests that both Managers believe Rice will be able to operate within their system, which relies on a DM that can do the above.

Now maybe Arteta wants to tweak the gameplan, or maybe he wants a more defensive oriented DM - as I don't think Havertz will offer the same level of defensive support that Xhaka did. But at the end of the day I think it's more likely that Arteta believes Rice can do the above. It's obvious to be assessed though.

Sorry mate, I don't want to flood the Mount thread with this.

When he played Bruno on the right wing so he could accomodate Weghorst as a 10, yeah that was awful.
I still feel so sorry for WW - few players try so hard and give so much while seemingly having no idea how to put the ball in the net!

He was the luckiest footballer on the planet for half a season, so I wouldn't shed a tear!

I just love watching guys with so much heart but who deep down must know they are miles out of their league. I'm sure he knows how lucky he was

First we say we don't want direct talks, then buckle and go against what we say, we'll never learn until we have quality in the correct positions when it comes to transfers.

I bet we even up our offer.

maybe, but there's way more to rice's game than just 'get, give and run', which is mainly what moyes asks him to do. we'll see soon enough, but i think arteta will unlock his potential to be more creative and dynamic in posession.

Ye he played every game with passion and gave his absolute best. Could see how frustrated he was when he missed the chances he should have scored. He knew it was a once in the lifetime opportunity to play at such a huge club.

Pep also wanted Maguire…

if the club feels like they've negotiated in good faith with chelsea about Mount and they don't see Chelsea willing to compromise whatsoever....walk the fuk away and move on to the next target. let's not be stubborn and get caught with our dick in a box. it's a vital summer for the club with being back in the CL and we have to make proper moves to strengthen the midfield and attack as a whole.

I understand that 65 mill is overpaying for Mount, and certainly wouldn't want the club to pay it at all. But why is it when, if we have to cough up 65 mill to sign Mount it's us overpaying, being shafted, doing the usual United thing and caving in... but when Arsenal have had to cough up multiple bids for Declan Rice there isn't the same kind of noise, I mean West Ham haven't budged and Arsenal have had to basically kowtow to their demands to get the deal done. I think we've played the Mount situation well, and going into face to face talks to hash out a deal whilst unlikely to still pay Chelsea's 65mill is good, I don't see it as us appearing weak at all, but us willing to still pursue a deal in the interest of all parties, but willing to negotiate on the finer details, shouldn't be any complaints about this.

Again, not saying Mount is worth 65 it just seems a bit lopsided no?

I always found this skeptical. Maguire is not good with the ball on his feet and he doesn't have the attributes to play the Guardiola way.
I mean he is quite good with the ball? His switches of play are brilliant and he can pass okay.

Last season may have been a write off, but Mount scored 11 goals in the league at 22 years of age the season before. He also scored 6 and 7 in the seasons prior too. He's also played 35 games for England, so he's a very experienced player for someone his age.

He may play in some similar areas to Bruno, but he's a quality player. I don't quite understand the trepidation from United fans, you've got to build your squad and there are a few holes to fill.

Maguire said he spoke with Pep before ManUtd transfer, Pep himself said they wanted Maguire but couldn't "afford" him.

He’s a good ball playing defender yes but I think even city would have tried to get rid of him now… he wouldn’t be anywhere close to their first team. How can you play an high line with him at the back? Which is what most teams wants to play. He’s be good when they’re in possession though unless you press him but when do city ever get pressed. They dominate the ball but he’d of come stuck against teams that counter and have a lot of pace.

Just you wait if we actually end up signing him.
One of my favourite threads is the DVB one after he made his first 15 minute cameo for us. You’d have sworn we’d signed prime Xavi from reading the comments.

I’m more than confident some people just like the idea of a new signing without thinking about it too much, and then jump on the hype and only see the good things until reality comes crashing down on them.

And then there is other side of extreme where everyone see only bad things and wont give transfer a chance, even with historical evidence of said player being very good when in a good system. Both are stupid.

It's a shambles. Helping Chelsea unload their dross, while also helping finance their move for a vastly superior player in the face of Caicedo. And the fact Mount is our priority target this summer to fix our midfield is appalling.
Chelsea can keep Mount and still afford Caicedo, we're not helping them fund anything.
