I have no idea why this very simple point has created such a push back.
Lots of disingenuous replies since I haven't seen anyone try to compare the events that created the backlash because that clearly wasn't the point.
The Beckham comparison is apt because he is the United player who had to endure the worst public backlash that I can remember and he did amazingly well to come out even stronger.
I actually doubt that Greenwood's return could be worse in terms of reaction from opposition fans but, as has been pointed out, the big difference was that pretty much all United fans supported Becks whereas this clearly isn't the case with Greenwood.
Does the loan have a break clause? I.e. if there's genuine interest in him now, could he be sold in January?
Apparently yes and it had been reported that Getafe would be due 20% of any sale fee, seems crazy to me that the club agreed to this but possible since they left it so late to get a loan deal.
Yeah, that clause is mind-blowing, we obviously fecked up with the whole thing. I haven't read any of the stories but seen various headlines suggesting that the bigger clubs in Spain are all interested. Not sure if there's any truth to those rumours though.

You want to doubt that it would be, but none of us know for sure. Still, Beckham had a lot of angry football fans going at him, Greenwood will have a lot of angry football fans plus people who give a shit about his criminal charges too. Including his own fans.
Honestly, the copium is very real here. You guys want to think it will be easier for him because you want him to come back. But the fact is he hasn't come back because you guys think the pressure from social media made that decision. A decision he has told you he has been part of. But you still want to believe he will come back and the furore will quickly die down. None of it makes sense when you actually think about it.
Who else came in? Who else wanted him to play for them? That 20% clause could have gone to anyone. And yet, only Getafe wanted the risk. Are we saying United held him back, or that other clubs knew more than we do and didn't want the risk? Which one is it?

I doubt it's true - he's done well enough for various clubs to start keeping tabs on his situation but it's still early days in his return so I cant see any big club taking a punt in this window.
If the 20% thing is true then it actually makes it less likely that United would sell him - most likely scenario is that he stays at Getafe until summer and then reassess.
We have two options come summer as he'll had one year left on his deal, sell for a modest fee with a high % sell on, or offer him a new contract.
Definitely fair. In the Summer we had no hope of getting anything for him and, even if we had somehow got an offer, the media were already taking the ridiculous stance we shouldn’t take any money for him. Getafe have taken the risk on him, basically done an amazing job of showing any other club that he’s an asset and made it near impossible for the media to argue it’s inappropriate for him to be sold for a few. They fully deserve their cut.

I think you've mixed a few posters up here. At the very least I have no recollection of saying the UK papers are the enemy. Bunch of cnuts, yes. But from a United perspective I wouldn't call them "the enemy". Maybe from the perspective of the citizenry, but that's another discussion.

Yeah my bad, I should have made it clear I meant people blaming the papers for the anger at him potentially being brought back.
But those reports are from over here, not from anywhere else. I'm not sure why the likes of Barca or Real would want him, but if they did both Greenwood and United should grab that.

It's a feck up from the club leaving it idiotically late to sort out his future so I guess they had no option but to agree this kind of crazy offer, not clear on the exact details of the 20% clause though and how long it is valid for

Because if so, what would stop other clubs coming in at the last minute? Like we have done ourselves before?
It doesn't make sense that Gatafe would get him and for that sort of deal, yet no one else could.

I would assume the same deal was on offer to others, but the club basically had 10 days to find him a club and after 18 months out I would not expect a queue of clubs ready to take the gamble
I guess it has paid off for Getafe though - no loan fee, only paying a small amount of his wages plus a potential cut of any sale

I do wonder exactly what Getafe would get and for how long. Because if he isn't sold before returning to us, surely they then get nothing? Maybe it's like a bribe we knew we wouldn't cash in on.
