Marveld 2014

Wow, this year's group getting their pants pulled down. Fair to say that barring a couple it's a weak group? Or is it just too top-heavy?

Could just be having a bad tournament, be less far along in their development cycle than other teams in the competition, have a bad balance of different positions (as you suggest). One tournament can never be relied on to say much about the quality of a youth side, especially when they're this young. And especially against the big foreign sides. It's generally not worth worrying until they hit U16, even U18 level, because so much is constantly changing before that stage.

We have only 3 U15s and 4 U14s who're 99' born. The rest are eligible even for next year. And we have no striker.Bad result was expected. It simply a consequence of the mismatch between English and international age group format since most of our U15s are 98' born and most of our U14s are 00' born. Not to mention the balance of positions are a bit mess after the recent U14s clear out.

The 93' crop of W.Keane,Morrison,Johnstone,etc... finished 11/16 in this tourno.Doesn't make them a bad side.

Campbell,Barrett,L.Thompson,Makela,Gomes,Barlow,Levitt,Garner are highly-rated youngsters from this side.Might be more.

2 minutes in Ajax make it 1-0. Great strike from just outside the box

Meulensteen commits a Foul. Freekick Ajax

John de Loos ‏@dilynux 1m
Strike from Ajax hits the crossbar. Nothing Campbell could have done, had that gone in

Lost 2-0 to Atletico Paranaense as well leaving us bottom of the group, no goals scored and -11 GD after 4 games. Last group game is against FC Twente starting in 20 minutes.

We were always gonna struggle with such a young squad, but to not score a goal with the likes of Gomes and Makela out there is perhaps a tad disappointing.

United scored a last minute equaliser to come back from 2-0 down at HT and get a 2-2 draw v Twente, Stewart and Thompson with the goals. Apparently a much better display all round.

from the Twitter updates khoazany linked to it sounds like Gomes was carrying us at times in the earlier games, with Rankin-Costello and Makela the best of the rest.

As I said we're without a proper striker after we released Rowan Roache last month.Always be tough for Butterworth who is a winger/AM.Remember the U21s went through the same goalless streak with Januzaj as striker. Not to mention we don't have a proper RB (as far as I know) as we've tried Barrett,L.Thompson and Barlow there who are CB,LB and CM.

You can see apart from the genius Gomes,Makela and Rankin-Costello are best players so far and they're 2 of the only 3 U15s available (the other one is Melle Meulensteen).Show how much one year of development can make a different.

Good to see United finally getting a point vs. Twente despite featuring a rotated XI with 2 U13s starting and Makela,Meulensteen,Barlow,Barrett rested.

#mufc XI vs. FC Twente: Rankin-Costello (c), J. Thompson (GK), Levitt, Stewart, Evans, Tanner, Dunne, Barlow, L. Thompson, Spratt, Gomes

Max Dunne is our new U14s signing this season (a CB) if anyone has missed the news.

Tomorrow we will face Fluminense in a sort of Shield semi final. Fluminense finished 5th in the other group, and the last placed team of the other group (S.V. Grol), with the 2 winners facing each other in a 9th-10th place playoff and the 2 losers playing in a 11th-12th place playoff.

Jack Stewart's goal vs Twente.Good dribble and finish.

Lewis Thompson's goal.Gomes was dancing with the ball then passed to Makela to crossed in for Meulensteen whose shot was deflected which results in Thompson's close range header.

that defender for Stewart's goal! practically gives up then proceeds to give the "wtf?" shrug and look at his 'keeper!

#mufc XI vs. Fluminense: Gomes ©, J. Thompson, Stewart, Spratt, Evans, Levitt, Dunne, Garner, L. Thompson, Barrett and Barlow

All 3 U13s started with no U15s and only Barrett,L.Thompson are 99' born (apart from the trialists whose birthday are unknown).Basically we're giving the younger ones minutes.

United won the penalty shoot-out 4-2 after Costello,L.Thompson,Levitt,Gomes all converted successfully.SV Grol had one shot wide and another one saved by Campbell.

United U15s finished the tournament in the 11th position.A disappointing tournament for us but hopefully the youngsters will learn from this and there will be some strengthen to the team before Nike Cup.From the few clips I've seen fullbacks and centre midfield need to be sorted as well as the defensive tactics.
