Expected to join United tomorrow for £4 according to sources in Derby.
(By the way, he wasn't playing for Derby on Monday against Rotherham ;)
Any thoughts?

Don't fancy him

No better than Caroll, and it's no point spending £4m on someone who ain't better than what we've got.

spot on

hear iceman might be in aswell

Well, he's got more experience, he's Premiership proven and obviously if we're spending 4m on him there's something very wrong with Barthez's fitness.

I really did wonder, one minute Fergie says he might be fit for Tuesday, next he's saying he hasn't got a clue in hell when Fabien returns. I wouldn't be surprised if he's out for a while.

I reckon we'll get him for 12 - just a question about how far the money men will stretch

Ah, it's the Kev the red / I have friends in a company brigade ;)

Well, I can see us signing Poom or a keeper (Fergie said so himself) but as far as I am concerned it's to bolster our goalkeeping depth, not to allow Fergie to sell Fabien.

Surely the gaffer has learned from the Jaap case last season that leaving major defensive changes until several games INTO the season is stupid?

if these 2 come off were looking in good shape

still hear the escude deal may be there aswell

so with money tight you think we will spend 4mil on a keeper to sit on the bench?

As I said earlier this week, we're still in negotiations with a number of players. We might end up with three new ones if everything goes to Sir Alex' plan, or if everything goes pearshape, we'll end up with nothing.

Obviously I was laughed at.

In a word: Yes.

A goalkeeper is a specialist position and you cannot take any chances with those. If Barthez is out long term all it takes is one bad challenge by an opponent on Roy and we're left with Williams and Steele.

if we spend 4m on Poom, whos a decent enough keeper id see him going straight in as number1.
Would be a bit unfair on Carroll though as he's done well IMO.

Sounds like Barthez may be out a while or possibly Fergie may be having doubts about having an injury prone player in the one position you really cant afford to change every week.

You can understand why tho cant you ?
U said we might sign 3 players and we might sign none, I don't know how reliable your info is
but any person (lets say his name is kevin) can just come out and say that and come out of it as if he has inside info...

Last season we had Barthez and Carroll with a very able Rai van der gouw as backup, although we never actually needed him.

Maybe Fergie thought as a result he can go through the season with only two senior keepers, but Barthez's situation changed his mind.

I honestly don't care about any creds, I just report what I get told.

He's a good keeper. He kept Derby in the prem for a few years. But i wouldn't put him ahead of Carroll

Every broke club is ripping us off. 4 million.

Looks like cuddly Pete lacks negotiating skills and a couple of balls.

money's not tight, the board are mate. they said make the CL before we buy again, ok we're there, spill the beans. fergie hasnt the time to feck about anymore. back him, or do the other...and no I'm not being like one of those fans on here who think we should be buying ronaldo and ronaldinho and pairing ferdinand with nesta etc etc, but fergie obviously thinks we need to buy, and its his judgement that counts. give him the dosh, he probably needs 20 mil to get what he wants.

not by me AEBM. fergie has clubs upping the price for fun, while behind him the suits are cribbing over a couple of mil, I'm sure with fergie's ethics he wouldnt have been happy with a bid of 2.5 mil for a player of this promise, rennes are right it would be robbery. time after time we lose out because of the fecking around behind the scenes , the stalling and penny pinching. how old is poom by the way?

I dont understand how we can bid £4m for Poom and not Escude. Surely there are other keepers around who would be cheaper and with just as much experience and what about Carini, whats happening there. He was excellent in the WC. Unless we bolster the defence its not going to matter who the keeper is because whoever they'll be they'll get lots of work!

There was a hint in there that you'll get 'pain' if it doesnt ;) it clearly being 'your' fault of course...

Poom would be a useful signing, but £4m when we appear to have missed out on PDC and Escude for less.... very odd.

Man Utd 'set to sign Poom'

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/man_utd/2222896.stm

This signing smacks of desperation to me. It would be a joke to think of him as the replacement for Barthez. There are loads of better keepers in the world than him, loads of reserve keepers in fact better than him, for example Carini and Robinson. If we're getting him as reserve keeper then I don't mind, its not like van der Gouw played that much, and it's effectively gradual retirement anyway. It'll do for this season, but I'd hope next summer we'd pick up Rustu on a bosman and sell Barthez.

Geesh. I'm half hoping we pick up Rustu too - just for him to make you realise he's not that bloody good.

Charlie Q might still tip the balance in favour of Ricardo though it seems.

Dans, I saw that Carlos was apparently recommending Ricardo, which might indicate that he's got a lot of potential. But I think Carroll has a lot of potential, and would think we're wanting someone experienced.

You're right, I can't think why us and Arsenal were so strongly linked for such a crap keeper.
